Savory bfast + good coffee? (Pasadena environs)

I know it's a bit further east, but try Village Eatery in Glendora (in the Village). Breakfast potatoes are perfect - crispy & savory on the outside, light as a cloud on the inside. Simple and delicious breakfast fare.

FYI - I know it's a Chowhound L.A. fave. Alton Brown hosts this Food Network show.

Dinner in La Quinta/Palm Desert/Indian Wells

The Cliffhouse. It's good food and a beautiful view of the valley.

Multiple Dinners in La Quinta - need advice

For a nice, non-stuffy restaurant nearby, try the Cliffhouse. It's got a great view, too.

Langham Dining Room -- Worth It?

I went early in December and had the 5 course menu. It was an incredible meal in that I was experiencing the passion of a young, interesting and talented chef right there on the plate in front of me. The food was vibrant, unusual, daring, and it tasted good, too. Have I had better meals? Yes, and for a lot less money. But the experience of eating Voltaggio's food executed in the way he conceived it was worth every penny. The meal filled me up, and I can eat. But if you're still hungry afterward, now's your chance to try to Southern California's famous In 'n Out Burger! There's one in Pasadena.

Desert Sushi Help

Try Okura in La Quinta. Avoid the sushi bar, and eat at the tables. Last time I was there (last year) it was pretty good. I didn't like the newer one in Palm Springs as much, although it is in a good central location.

Sushi Pizza- California specialty?!

Yoshida in San Marino has a version.

PLEASE POST YOUR VOTES HERE: Ultimate Los Angeles Restaurants 2007

Agreed. I threw away the pastrami and the chicken sandwich after two anxious bites. And that aoli for the fries...ugh. They're in my bottom 3.

Comme Ca reservs for Sat. but afraid of the 'tude and noise

Thanks! You're right. I will try it and see for myself. I do like trying new places, and this definitely fits the bill!

Comme Ca reservs for Sat. but afraid of the 'tude and noise

I'd like to try this restaurant, but the consensus appears to be that it is excruciatingly loud, and there is some L.A. attitude; and it's Saturday night. There's nothing I hate more than going to a restaurant and being treated like I don't belong there, particularly if it's not even up to par. I have a long list of restaurants I'd like to try or return to, so am I wasting my Saturday night reservation here? Or should I return on a weekday night or lunch?

I gots me a $50 gift cert to Barnes and Noble? Best Cookbook to get?

I second the Silver Palate 25th Anniv Edition. It is great!!
Also, The Les Halles Cook book (Anthony Bourdain). So interesting and informative!

Help please-cooking 2 rib roasts-same oven

It's ok to roast together, but do not cook them at high heat for any amount of time. Roast at 225 until the internal temp is 125-130. We did ours today, and it was a beauty! Perfectly pink through and through. The cook time will be about 6 hours.

The Crab Pot - Long Beach - REVIEW w/ Photos

I guess it's true then. The girl said that corporate was removing it from the menu because not all the restaurants in the chain were able to get it easily, and it was simply too expensive to ship to those places. Something like that.

Alas, my lobster search goes on...
Thanks for the great write-up and photos!

The Crab Pot - Long Beach - REVIEW w/ Photos

I used to go there frequently, and would always get the lobster feast. But the last time I was there about 4 months ago, I noticed it wasn't on the menu. The waitress told me lobster was no longer being offered by the chain. Is this true? Did you see lobster on the menu when you were there? That was really my main reason to go there: cheap(ish) steamed lobster.

Also, I have to give a shout out to the molten lava cake. Heaven.

Watery potato gratin

Agree. I use half & half and heavy cream, and it comes out perfectly every time. In fact, I don't even use cheese in the mix. I just maybe put some gruyere on top, towards the end of the baking until the cheese browns and bubbles. The starch and the fat are enough to make a beautiful, creamy sauce.

Chef Akira in J-Town

What's the name of the place, if you recall?

Mexican Chicken Casserole recipe

Janeh's sounds great, but for a really easy recipe that goes over really well with friends and family alike:

Green Enchilada Casserole

1 1/2 cans *Green* enchilada sauce
1 onion
3 garlic cloves
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp red chile flakes
1 rotisserie chicken
1 pound Jack cheese
Corn tortillas

Saute sliced onion, garlic, cumin and flakes in olive oil. After about 10 minutes, add sauce, let simmer for about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, shred the chicken (leave out skin), then add to sauce. Simmer another 15 minutes.

In a casserole dish (preferably rectangular), spoon some sauce (no chicken pieces) at the bottom, then begin heating tortillas and layering them at the bottom of the pan. Ladle mixture over tortillas, layer jack cheese, then repeat twice more. Make sure you have enough cheese to cover top. Bake until bubbling. Yum.

This microwaves really well, too. I've made it countless times and the pan is ALWAYS scraped clean.

Pasadena Bistro - Madeleine or Cafe Bizou

Bistro de la gare in So Pas. (I believe same proprietors as Cafe Beaujolais)

Suggestions for Craft?

I loved the braised corn and the potatoes gratin.

ISO great tamales for takeout

In my family, La Mascota is the reigning queen for tamales. El Aguila in El Sereno is also great in a pinch!

What is Your Favorite Non-Foodie Thanksgiving Dish?

We have that, too! Only we use Ritz!

How good is Yoshida in San Marino?

Try it for yourself and be the judge.

Restaurant help in South Pasadena?

Maison Akira is near Lake on Green. Sorry, that's in Pasadena, which is where Lake is.

How good is Yoshida in San Marino?

Go there and order the albacore tuna, either sashimi or sushi. No one does it this way. The toro is always top notch, as is the yellow tail belly. He has live shrimp; ask for the head to be fried. The uni is available in season, which is soon, I think. Order anything. It's good stuff.

Brent's Deli Northridge - Best Ever

Sorry Mr Taster, but Brent's is great! Any time, any day, I go the extra 20 miles or so to have it.

saturday brunch for group of 8 around pasadena?

Julienne in San Marino.

Inexpensive Eats in Palm Springs

Definitely don't worry about dressing up EVER in Palm Springs. I've been to the nicest restaurants there, and I invariably see people in summer dresses and shorts and Tommy Bahama flowery shirts and sandals there.

Zin is less expensive than the others, and very quaint and pleasant - and very casual. There is a great Mexican restaurant called El Gallito in Cathedral City, and it is cheap and good! We also enjoy Manhattan in the Desert for deli. If you venture farther out into Palm Desert, stop by the River and go to Aquatic something or other. They have fairly inexpensive entrees, too.

Best japanese Restaurant in San Gabriel Valley?

It's definitely a sushi bar, and prices are very much in line with other similar places in the surrounding area (Alhambra, Pasadena, Arcadia, etc.)

nice dinners in Pasadena

I was there that night, too, but about 7-8pm, and dinner and jazz were going strong. I liked the food here a lot, like the watermelon salad, but the service was veeeery slooooooow. Maybe some staff called in that night. But it won't deter me from going there again.
