Have you ever boycotted a restaurant for non food/service related issues? (i.e. political statements)

Chowhounds are being surprisingly civil in this thread.
Yeah I'm a liberal jerk who doesn't eat at Chik Fil A, Dominoes or Papa John's.
Not that I ever did before, since the food is awful at all three establishments in my opinion.
There is a local BBQ place that is very vocally rightwing and blatantly supports some views that I abhor. I have eaten there but it annoyed me.
I know objectively I make no difference to their bottom line but I guess it assuades my privledged white girl guilt.

I'm self deprecating about this, obviously.

My first thanksgiving and I have questions (re: temp. probe placement and oyster stuffing!)

It's my husband and I's first time hosting thanksgiving and we are serving 15 guests counting ourselves and our child. We have a 16 lb. bird that we got on a sale that we did not notice until later appears to have some marking that implies it is injected with a brine. We were planning on a brine (cider brine from epicurious)...can we still do that
Second question, where is the proper placement for our probe thermometer? Have seen both breast and thigh (thickest parts) recommended. Which is
Honestly we just want a decent bird that is all one coloall over. Help!
?
PS Hit me with your best oyster stuffing (cornbread) recipe, please?

Anyone? Our flight leaves at 6:00am tomorrow. I did find an Ethiopian place and some place called Scrumbcious pie and burger. Any other hot tips?

Houston gal on business in Mesquite, per diem...where to go?

My company is sending me to the Dallas area for Monday thru Friday, breakfast and lunch will be provided by our hotel and conference, but they are providing a $40 per day per diem.for dinner.
It's not much but I'm looking for affordable chow worthy eats to show my associat/travel buddy.
We are also staying at the Homewood Suites Hilton on Markeville Dr in Dallas, about 10 miles (im told) from our conference in Mesquite.

Chowhounds, do your best!

I crave brussel sprouts. No joke. Craving some right now. Roasted with salt and pepper and some lemon juice...

Does anyone else find this combo more than a little repulsive? Mayo + White Rice

Okay I think what disturbs me the most about it is, in fact, the WARM rice.
It might be remotely acceptable to my palate served cold. I'm not sure.
Frankly, I don't think mayo belongs on, in or around anything warm, ever.

Gendered representations of food in the media

And this is because society likes to play women's fears and emotions about weight/control against each other. Sad...

Gendered representations of food in the media

One more thing: a few years ago alton brown's show "Good Eats" had 2 episodes titled "the man food show" and "another man food show", the first being about "food best eaten in a la-z-boy recliner (in front of the game?)" with corn dogs and burger slides making an appearance.
The second episode featured a clueless man who couldn't make his own breakfast so alton taught him to prepare bacon/eggs/coffee/etc.
Might be worthwhile to check those episodes out - they're both on youtube in entirety.

And thank you for bringing this topic up! I appreciate the reminder to keep a close watch on what my young impressionable female children might be hearing/learning.
It is definitely time for a conversation!

Gendered representations of food in the media

You're welcome. Even more interesting is the effect this sort of thing has on children - I happened to actually really enjoy the new Dr.Pepper 10 and have bought it on occaison ( I also happen to be a woman). During one grocery trip for a bbq I went to pick up a 2 liter of it for myself and my 10 year old daughter and 7 year old neice both commented "mommy/aunt! You can't drink that! That's for boys!"...
Which brings the larger question of what sort of conditioning theyre on the receiving end of in regard to food choices as a whole?
If dr.pepper 10 is "for boys", what food is for girls?
I think I may ask my daughters (8 and 10) these questions today. Id love to hear what they consider "man food" and "woman food".

Gendered representations of food in the media

I think the recent emergence of "diet like" sodas for men is interesting - Dr.Pepper 10 comes to mind. These commercials specifically state theyre "not for women"!
Coke zero tried this when it came out - with black cans and masculine oriented ad spots.
Soda companies felt that they hadn't cornered a market of men who would LIKE to drink diet sodas but "can't" because they're seen as too feminine...

The best (store bought) hot dog buns

brucesw- oh and you CAN get top split hot dog buns here! I noticed they serve hotdogs in top split buns at fuddruckers so inquired if they might sell me some, and they did! Cheap.
Got a dozen for like 2 bucks. They bake em there too...

Typing on CH on my phone is insufferable!!!!!

I have this issue as well. Try downloading a different browser (try opera for mobile, or chrome if you can get it) on your phone, as I assume you are using the stock browser. :)
Hope this helps.

Chick-fil-A's Chicken

My (late) mother is cousin by marriage to Dan Cathy, the infamous, and his father Truitt. (I should say here that I am extemely far removed from that family politically and religiously).
I have been receiving cards for free chik fil a all my life, it seems.

That said, I never eat there. Ever. Good gracious I find them gross and bland.
Yes the stores are clean. But the food is overpriced goo.

Yuck.

And I'm not a food snob, I absolutely will cruise in to chain/fast food stops on occaison and enjoy them.
Just not Chik Fil A.

Food packaging that you love/hate?

I prefer my butter to be in the little wax paper sticks rather than foil - can you guess why?
Because sometimes I need slightly softened butter and I'm lazy so I like to just throw the stick in the microwave for 10 secs. or so...

I COULD use a butter bell (that's a finite amount tho), I COULD leave it out on the counter for 5 minutes (I live in Houston TX, home of 104 degree summer days)...sigh, pure laziness.. haha

How can Subway say they are fresh??!! Nothing has any taste and omelettes are made days ahead.

You'll see here in this thread, http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/416124 - titled "What is with the smell at subway??" that quite a lot of people do, in fact, think that Subway smells funky.

I don't feel one way or another as I don't have a subway near me and I practically never visit one.
I can't form strong opinions about subway. Its an alternative to the glop served at McDonalds and its ubiquitous (easy to locate and everywhere!)...so, I dont care.

But there's a yeast-ish funk that some find offensive. *shrug*

Should there be a cash-only line at the supermarket?

And who cares if it does anyway? What could possibly be the time crunch for anyone that the extra 45 seconds, even 1 or 2 whole minutes is that important?
Its ridiculous how quickly we think everything is supposed to happen now.
I'm 26 years old and I feel this way, I wonder how those even older than me are feeling?
Extremely rushed, that's what.

Should there be a cash-only line at the supermarket?

Now THIS I agree with. I'm not the world's greatest people reader but there's an obvious difference between an obnoxious old bat forcing the cashier to call for price checks on a dozen items, remove/rain check items, etc. Vs. a friendly old man/woman making honest, kind conversation about the weather.
Its all too clear who's a self-entitled ol' b*stard and who is genuinely old and isolated - and deserving of one's patience.

Should there be a cash-only line at the supermarket?

This. I always make time to give a little chit chat to the lonely elderly women at the grocery store... perhaps their children never call, or live far away, and their husband/siblings have passed... gimme a break, how freaking busy are you that you can't say 4 sentences to a very friendly stranger?
