White Bear – My Favorite Dumplings in NY

Went back everyday since the 25th to try the sea cucumber version .. None, and no apologies, even tho they see us returning everyday .. Should have taken this as a sign haha!

Finally, today we split an order of 12pcs of spicy wonton .. 4.50 for 12 peices
That's what I pay in Shanghai but in RMB lol and that stuffing was twice as much.

Very disappointed, they par cooked/steamed them and just reheated when people place their order incase of 'rush hour' ..
The skin was thin to start, so to reheat this, the skin tasted mushy which for me ruined the whole dish.
I don't think I am a picky eater, but 'mushy thin skin' and 'wonton' don't go hang in hand.

If you must have this, best request 'cook to order'

Best Shabu Shabu???

Thx Silverjay,

We actually tried this place a few times this year :)

Our friends are carnivores lol and they enjoyed this place!
We prefer elaborate seafood selections, so the menu choices were quite limited for us.
Despite that, the prime rib-eye we had chosen was sliced perfectly for the quick swish in the bubbling broth.

Peter Luger steak- Medium? Well?

Am a PL fan and have been since childhood ..
It took us a few trys to get it the way we loved it best ..
Fourty seconds added to the med rare finish .. We really cleaned our plates!

Dry-aged, no comparison at all, but I do agree the fat or marbling is the deciding flavor factor of a great steak and a G.R.E.A.T. steak!

SF CH looking for authentic or different Chinese and Taiwanese food

Haha, mayhaps, but isnt SF a hub for many Taiwanese/Asian immigrants? I think the SF/LA communities are much larger than NYC/flushing combined. At least that is what my friends and relatives say when they visit us .. They always ask us to find non taiwanese venues. And when we visit them, we have te same requests.

Sorry for that digression lah^

I think the best Taiwanese food is in Taiwan because of the local ingredients and the meats where in most cases the establishments buy fresh not frozen. JMHO

The best mien xIen is in Ximending cos they really put 瑶柱,柴鱼 in the stock
BUT if you like intestines or oysters then you have to try that @ Chuan Zhou St before Ding Zhou rd in Taipei if you ever stop by.

风水轮流转 ... Haha never fails!!
The restaurant on the top floor is now discounted mon-fri starting
@ $2.25 per dim sum ... The owner closed/sold all three restaurants to open this new one in the new world mall.

I find the new world mall food court quite mediocre but packed .. We prefer the Vietnamese rest(Pho Hoang) nearby for the pork chop over rice is stellar and next door for the beef soup .. Keep us updated on your culinary journey when you get back to NYC.

Chinese in Manhattan for a mixed family- Dilemma!

Beg to differ PF Changs is not authentic Chinese food .. It fills a void where Applebee's meets Foo Man Chu .. They never met but if they did it would be PFChg ... lol

I know for a fact bcos one of the franchise owners had us tweaked their flavor profiles due to lacking sales back in its inception around 1996-7 and lots has changed since then.

Chinese in Manhattan for a mixed family- Dilemma!

ITA w/ Fuleen .. Must have been the same night that we were there .. lol
We used to love that place when it was the original owner ..
I think the fukienese bought it over about 3-4 years ago, this is not a rumor.
It was more family night than an invite your in laws kind of place ..

There has been many changes within Chinatown in the past many years and unfortunately, most of the better chefs are now retired and the new breed are just not purists in techniques and seasonings.

As someone mentioned, we just want well prepared authentic food not the mish mash of fusion and calling this Chinese or Asian .. Where is the integrity!?! I think we foodies should get together and map out a strategy .. LOL

Hey Lau,

If you're ever in Flushing, there is Ah Zhong Mien Xien in the old flushing mall soon to be defunct in a couple of years due to real-estate politics ..

Roast goose - preferably Chinese

BoKay in Chinatown on 78-80 Bayard St. used to serve Roast Goose .. Since their elder brother's passing about a decade ago, they haven't offered goose.

If you're ever in Shanghai, they have excellent roast goose or if ever in Taiwan, they have boiled/ smoked goose ... No competition there, many secret ingredients. But the smoking process is best when they use sugar cane .. Uber fragrant served w/ young julienne ginger .. Must try!!

Purists raves of its authenticity. I love the Non Ti Scordar di Mi being the purist that I am, everything else is wonderful too.

True ...
I'd rather not get into a pricing war cos it doesn't work period ..
Realistically priced menu is best for longevity in a business that has a higher rate of failure.
Not pricing on it's intrinsic values is best .. JMO

The bottom line is same/similar for everyone because all the stock in the pantry is coming from the same purveyors.

I think as long as we are not eating every meal at the same place, there is room for discovery and exploration and also wallet friendly.

Best Shabu Shabu???

I have found none in the city or neighboring boroughs.
Perhaps it is not cost effective versus prices most people want to pay.

If you are a purist and want great broth .. Try 小肥羊 on Main Street near Northern blvd in Flushing.
No ambiance but the broth is worth the trek and you can order live Alaskan king crab .. but be wiling to spend if you order all seafood ..

Most diners savor a bowl of broth before they start ordering .. They will replenish gratis!

sushi of gari east vs west

It's a UES vs UWS ..
Having dined @ both .. Much prefer UWS for service and conversation and ambiance.
Also not a fan of non-traditional sushi

White Bear – My Favorite Dumplings in NY

We pass by all the time and its nondescript place has never seemed inviting to us .. Prolly bcos we make our own dumplings a home and freeze them .. Will make a point to try the sea cucumber ones .. Tmrw^

Flushing has had a better selection of eats for the past 10-15 yrs now .. Some of the new immigrant flavor profiles are not to our liking .. Kinda like the buffet explosions everywhere.

any ideas for smoking something new/unusual?

Wow meatloaf sounds yummy!
Smoking any firm cheese always a great option, as a side dish or later for leftovers to make a sandwich.
Mayhaps be unusual for you, ever try adding - firm tofu - when you are smoking your meats ...
Veggie for smoking, can try stuffing pepper w cheese, rice, or your fav recipe etc
How about eggplants w some spice rubs

Help me find this Chinese dish NOVA/DC

Can try to explain it this way ..

Like a scallion pancake sandwiched w/ five spiced sliced leg of beef (五香牛肉/wu xiang niu ro)
They will most likely top this w/ julienne scallions and chinese parsley
