Burgers Priest to open West End Location

I completely agree DT - I was recently in LA and lined up for a good fifteen minutes to order and waited another ten to get my InO burger. I was so disappointed! My burger was completely overwhelmed by the standard toppings and I could barely taste the meat. BP's burger is so much better!

Congee Queen - 1st timer

To which CQ , and what time did you go millygirl? i find a big difference between the don mills/lawrence location and the don mills/steeles location, much preferring the later. i haven't tried the one in markham or scarborough

that said, when it's packed and there's a line up at the steeles location they tend to rush you out ...last time, as soon as they dropped the change, a group of servers swarmed our table and had it bussed and reset before we stood up and put our coats on lol

two of my favourites are G5, two choices of meat, i usually order the bbq and the roast pork and K52 spice and pepper salt bean curd

Vaticano on Bellair St

I'm being taken there on Saturday night and was horrified to discover that the general consensus of this board is to avoid. That said, those comments were made well over 5 years ago......has anyone been recently? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Nigiriya Sushi-to-go: A brief first review

I've been going to Zen since 2005 and have been served by Jackie on multiple occasions as well - we like to sit at the two end seats at the bar where he stands.

I will give him the benefit of doubt in regards to his intentions but there was no mistaking or mishearing of what he said....crystal clear... 'don't waste it'.

Price of Lemons - absurd!

Due to frost in Chile and Argentina.
http://spendmatters.com/2013/10/14/bi...

Highland Farms had them on for $1.99/lb last week. Metro had a 2lb bag from Argentina for $3.99 yesterday vs $1 each for organic.
I've been using more limes, they're cheap now.

Yep, 100% verbatim

Forgive me for going off on a rant here but we were 'regular' customers and often spent quite a bit of money there (the bill for the two of us that evening alone was $389.00) so his comment was even more insulting to me.

Nigiriya Sushi-to-go: A brief first review

We had two orders of omakase sashimi and, as Jackie was preparing sushi throughout the evening, orders of whatever nigiri looked interesting.

Regardless, even if I slathered the wasabi on my face as a moisturizer, I didn't appreciate the comment or the assumption that we would waste it.

Now I pick up my sashimi from Taro, drive over to the LCBO at Bayview Village for my sake, take it home and enjoy.

Your favourite grocery store in GTA (chain or otherwise?)

I like the No Frills at Pharmacy & Eglinton.....it's clean, has a decent produce section and, rare for a No Frills, a fresh fish counter and butcher.

+1 on the Zen recommendation but Danforth & Eglinton isn't that close.

Last time I was there alcohol couldn't be served on the north side where we were seated.

They were waiting upon inspection from the fire department. Does anyone know if they got the thumbs up?

Pearl at Bayview Village

I went for Dim Sum last Sunday morning and would not recommend it. Cheung Fun (forgive any misspelling) and Har Gow were disappointing. Both the Shrimp and Beef CF were thick and mushy with very little sauce, Har Gow wrapping was thick, chewy and rubbery. Taro croquettes were bland, char siu bau had very little filling and was dry. On the upside, an order of green beans/garlic was quite tasty and the order of sliced bbq pork was quite good if you prefer a leaner cut. We also had the crab claw which was very good - my only complaint was that it was served with Worcestershire sauce, not red vinegar.

I'm very forgiving if my food isn't piping hot when ordering from a cart but when it's prepared to order I expect it to arrive hot and, for the most part, everything was lukewarmish.

The service was quite good, attentive and warm. I don't know how much the bill was so I can't comment on that but given the location and table settings I would imagine it was on the pricey side. I'll stick to my 'go to' for dim sum - Sam Woo Seafood.

Searching for Kerrygold in T.O.

Quite a few Metros carry it. I've picked it up at Shopper's World and Eglinton Square. Loblaws at Victoria Park has it. They also have Dubliner and Guinness Cheddar as well.

Any good Sake at the LCBO?

It was lovely and a really nice change from what we usually have - I think we'll have to try it chilled to really appreciate the flavours. Thanks again for your recommendation.

Any good Sake at the LCBO?

Thank you both for your suggestions and input. I picked up the Ama No To as I left before you responded - next time we'll try the Okunomatsu. Being the sake novices that we are, we order the same one all the time. It was nice to broaden our horizons a bit.
Elvisahmed - great suggestion to go for a sake tasting, will do that for a surprise date night!

Any good Sake at the LCBO?

Would the AMANOTO DAIGINJO 45
VINTAGES 242149 | 720 mL bottle be suitable to be served warm? I'm surprising my better half with an early Valentine's dinner. I'm steaming some King Crab and also picking up some sashimi from Taro. I'm quite uneducated when it comes to sake - would the Amanoto pair well with the sashimi and crab? If no, any suggestions? Your opinion would be highly appreciated!

Regal (formerly Ruby's)

Evidently I fail at math lol. $32 + hst = $36.16.

Regal (formerly Ruby's)

My mother's cousin recommended Regal and the two of us went for dinner this evening. We arrived at 5:45 and a bit of a flag went up when there was only one table of two finishing up their dinner. It took us awhile to decide on what to eat and we settled on beef tenderloin in a black pepper sauce and sauteed and deep-fried scallops with vegetables. I say settled as nothing on the menu really jumped out at us.

Awful would sum up the beef. The dish was barely hot, the sauce was bland with no taste of pepper. The texture of the meat was odd, as if some sort of tenderizer had been added, not a pleasant mouth feel at all. Zero Wok Hay. Fail.

The scallop dish however, was quite good. Juicy, flavourful and piping hot. I've never had deep-fried scallops in a Chinese restaurant and these were great. The sauteed scallops were mixed with very fresh snap peas, king oyster mushroom, and ginger with a slight wok hay taste, not oily at all. Fantastic.

The service was a bit sullen and indifferent. The waitress walked by our table a few times without noticing our teapot lid was tilted up for a water refill and we had to call out for her attention on the fourth pass. We sat for quite sometime obviously done eating and had to ask for the bill. We were the only ones in the room for most of our meal ( a large party of about 15 drifted in towards the end of our meal) which really didn't
help with the ambiance.

The bill was a bit of a surprise though. It was only $36.16. On the menu the tenderloin was $18 and the scallops were $20, we had one bowl of rice between us so I figured about $45 tax in. They automatically gave a 20% senior's discount and then didn't charge any tax. Nice!

One thing that really bugged me though, and put a bad taste in my mouth, (and speaking of that, the meal was a bit of an msg overload, tongue is really tingling now) was the manager who brought the bill and did not return with my change. She also stood there after she brought the bill, waiting for me to pay. I really dislike this, it makes me feel rushed and like they think I'm going to dine and dash. Anyways, I gave her two 20s. I had a 5 but I didn't want to leave $45 but I wanted to tip more than $3.84. When it became quite evident she wasn't returning my change we left and they lost out on the extra tip. They've also lost out on future visits. There are far too many superior restaurants closer to home.

ps. Charles Yu - it's definitely not worth the drive from Richmond Hill!

Le Cafe Michi or Zen for better sashimi in Scarborough

My taste buds don't appreciate either so they don't prepare it for me. You did jog my memory a bit though Charles - octopus was also on my plate.
One of the carte blanche pieces they made, and I'm probably butchering the name, was matsu (?) seared with the blow torch - to die for.

Le Cafe Michi or Zen for better sashimi in Scarborough

I had the omakase sashimi at Zen on Saturday night and paid the surcharge for the fresh wasabi. On the plate were scallops (so creamy), fluke with a dab of lemon zest, sweet shrimp, tuna, amberjack, horse mackeral - mixed with finely diced green onions and ginger, and tuna belly. I might be missing something else, can't think of it. We ordered additional pieces of the tuna belly and amberjack and, what I love about sitting at the bar, asked for whatever he felt like making . He made a roll with eel and a sweet type of sauce which I found meh, and some sort of fish that I can't remember drizzled with lime juice and a pinch of salt - that was great.

I'm no sashimi expert by any means but imo you cannot beat Zen for freshness and melt-in-your-mouth pieces of heaven. It's worth the price and, getting off topic a bit, I hope they don't move as I'm sure their overhead is quite reasonable. It came up in conversation with one of the waitresses and she said that there were no plans to relocate in the near future.

No, I just picked the youngest looking cashier and crossed my fingers and toes. There isn't a self-checkout at this particular Metro - come to think of it, I don't think I've seen self scan at any Metro.

Have I missed King Crab season?

Here's a better picture. I totally lucked out, it was the only one of about 15 packages - somebody fell asleep at the wheel. .002 Kg? !!?!

I spent the rest of my grocery shopping giggling to myself over my deal of a lifetime.
Score one for the little guy!
