Al's Place, Inay, SPQR, Smitten, Outerlands [San Francisco]

Hi Happy,
From a quick surf, it sounds like we had Pork Adobo at Inay. When I asked the server what she recommended, she asked if we liked pork or chicken. I didn't stick around for more guidance as the car was illegally parked. I left the picking in the hands of my 9th grade nephew and I was amazed at what he came out with. We both savored it on the way to Oakland. Glad we picked it up since Oliveto was such a dud per my other post ;-)

My veggie antennea went up when I saw the Kale salad on their web site. Glad I asked to see it first cause yeah it looked nothing like the trendy kale, fruity, etc numbers. It might even have been mostly regular salad with a few kale leaves thrown in.

BTW, Inay means "mother" in English. Fitting!

Al's Place, Inay, SPQR, Smitten, Outerlands [San Francisco]

Hi Bay'sters.

I just got back from a week of eating with niece/nephews.

Al's Place -best meal of the trip. $60/tasting menu and they're open to tailoring. Passionate kitchen, really nice staff. Excellent wine. Sit at the bar to watch the magic.

Inay - I read the "Underrated..." thread on this board and decided to chk out this spot since my nephew loves his Filipino classmates home cooking. Had some pork stew of some sort. Fabulous spice. THANKS, chowsters!

SPQR -- fab wine, exceptional white tuna crudo (probably the single best dish of the trip). Chicken liver pate definitely delicious but eat it sparingly, it's filling! The other courses were good, but seemed so heavy compared to Al's Place and definitely a lot less veggies. I'm an omnivore but prefer healthy food. Had the "vanilla nut torta, milk jam, blackberry, ground cherry and pecancino gelato". Sounds great, right?! It was dry and rather bland.

Smitten (ice cream) -- I continue to love it, every flavor.

Outerlands -- also continues to be great. esp the matcha scone with berries (raspberries?)

Looking fwd to the next trip back!

Oakland: Oliveto Cafe or Pizzaiolo

Hi Robert,

Thanks for coming thru with the quick advice on Thursday! Turns our I also decided to go to Oliveto's but I must say it was a let down and seemed past its prime. The wine was very good but here's the rest:

- stone ground red corn polenta w/ragu: only oK. the ragu was a bit watery/weak and a tinge greasy. Definitely had better ragu in a finer italian restaurant.

- flatbread w tumeric/white bean spread: there was so little bean spread that I had to ask for more. they brought out about 2 Tbsp in a teeny dish. the bean dip was pretty tasty but the stingy serving size was ridiculous.

- pizza with carmelized onion, sausage and tomato/cheese: it had so much cheese I could barely taste or see the onions. and it was really salty.

So definitely a dud meal. I wouldn't go back and wouldn't recommend it.

But I REALLY appreciated your quick reply!

Which restaurant have you eaten at the most?

Angelica Kitchen -- order one of the daily entrees; the best price point in the city
Luke's Lobster -- for a sandwich fix
Barbuta -- group lunches

(@ellenost: thanks for the Atera mention. I needed a fancy spot.)

Revelatory new Sichuan restaurant--Legend on 7th Avenue at 15th

Thanks Pooki (and Bob), I'll probably pass on Legend.

For this inquiry I was looking for something nearby'ish the High Line.

But in general, I'd love some tips on where to find top Chinese food in NYC (or anywhere in the Tri-state area). Ideally with some healthy offerings -- minimum oil and "bad" fat. Thank you!

Revelatory new Sichuan restaurant--Legend on 7th Avenue at 15th

Hello Hounds!
Is Legend still turning out above-average food in Chelsea? I'm thinking of going this Sunday for the first time with a group; or Wednes with a few friends.

Any tips for ordering there with a group? I'm thinking we'll try some of the mentioned favorites, ask the staff and pick some random things.

For dessert, I'm thinking we'll walk over to Gramercy Tavern. Other ideas?

Thank you!

Unheralded Brooklyn Restaurants

Folks,
How is James (in Prospect Heights)? How does it compare with the more heralded Battersby (in Cobble Hill) which I loved from my 1 visit ~ a year ago.

thanks!

Thanks, gonzo and weinstein! Black dog is barking!

The concrete topping sounds delicious. I'm a big on Leon's in Milwaukee, especially their butter pecan topped w a heap of pecans. I never understood the Kopp's fans ;-)

If food and moderately priced (e.g. perla, peasant) was the ONLY criteria, what italian place would you suggest? including perla, peasant. I need a spot for tonight ;-) thank you!

SYD: what's comparable to (the now closed) Universal?

Hello,
I really miss the talent (creative, reliably good) in Christine Mansfield's kitchen at Universal. Can you suggest something comparable. I have SixPenney booked this week.

Also, have you seen this food trip Christine is leading in India in October:
http://www.epicurioustravel.com.au/jo... The price is hefty. Still debating.

thanks!

The Cloisters at Sea Island

Hi folks!
any recent reports about The Cloisters on Sea Island, GA? I'm thinking of staying there wed & thurs night this week. I hoping at least the breakfast (in The Georgian Room?) is special. For lunch/dinner I don't mind paying the premium if the food is fresh/creative. Should we eat out somewhere?

I saw old thread that mentioned some alternatives. Cargo Portside Grill and a few others:

Who is doing the most creative, delicious breakfast anywhere near Atlanta? Something as healthy & delicious as Flying Biscuit's Oatmeal pancakes, Collard Green scramble and biscuit & rhubarb jam would be great.

Thank you!
