Great Sushi near Campbell

What's your favorite sushi near Campbell (or anywhere San Jose to Mountain View, etc)? Anything close to the quality of Kaygetsu in Menlo Park? Sad to hear they closed.

thank you!

May I get your vote? Compass, A voce, Dovetail, Gascogne, Peasant

PieGirl & Kelea, thanks so much!

My trusted source also votes Dovetail. But alas my group is leaning towards Gascogne because of office proximity. I hope it's not too dull these days. zOHTH, the price is right.

I really appreciate your comments & tips. Sunday at Dovetail is now a TODO!

Warm thanks,
Janet

I picked them for their prix-fixe offerings as I have a group of 14 to take out on a budget. I love

Annecy France - La Ciboulette

Had a wonderful menu here on Friday night. Their foie gras is wonderful per the locals we dined with. So I tried version on the menu - lightly seared, served with honey glazed fig .Perfection!

Enjoy,
Janet

Geneva - Saturday dinner. Anything new?

We ended up at Cafe du centre nearby the hotel. It wasn't that great. Next time I'd venture further from town. In case it''s useful, some locals recommended:
Le lexique - bistro
Le Carnivore - meat, rustic
Chatt Botte - michilen star at a fancy hotel (Beau Visage? on the lake)

thanks anyway for the Dumas tip, SB!

Bern Switzerland - Zentrum Paul Klee, chocolate, other favorites

Hello,
I'll be in Bern on Sunday visiting the Zentrum Paul Klee. How's the food at the Restaurant Schöngrün? Or the more casual "modern Cafe on Museum Street"?

museum dining web site: http://www.paulkleezentrum.ch/ww/en/pub/web_root/ser/restaurants_sch_ngr_n.cfm

I'd love any other Bern suggestions for a good meal on Sunday night, chocolate, pastry or other favorites?

Thanks so much!
Janet

Geneva - Saturday dinner. Anything new?

Thanks, SB! That sounds just fine. If we get there, I'll be back here with our comments.

Geneva - Saturday dinner. Anything new?

Bon jour,
For a dinner this Saturday in Geneva, I'm thinking of these places gleaned from the archives. What would you suggest? Anything new?

Chez Jacky for lunch
Les Cepages and Brasserie de l'Hotel de Ville for dinner
Soupçon, 8, place du Bourg-de-Four, 1204, in the old city of Geneva

Merci!
Janet

Breakfast in Atlanta?

If you don't mind going to midtown, The Flying Biscuit has a branch there. My standard order is short order of Oatmeal Pancakes and the Southern Scramble (I go for extra collard greens in place of the turkey hash). Though the original location in Little Five Points is preferred.

Folks, what are the other good breakfast spots these days? I've been away from ATL for 9 yrs now.

Thanks!
Janet

PIT - Vivo, Pangea, Mortons

thanks, PG! The dinner is Oct 16. will report back.

VA Chef in Chicago for 2 nights (Oct. 9, 10), HELP!

hi BRB,

thanks for the Frontera reserv tip. I appreciate your other comments. L20 was way overpriced for the "cute" food he's serving. i'm just not a fan of the comp popcorn prelude, buffalo chicken "wing". i wish I could recall my app, entree and dessert -- just remember thinking they missed the mark.

L20...too molecular for me and something courses were actually bland. and skimpy portions too. I'm NOT some one looking for quantity. i wanted to like it. i love his blog.

did any other hounds think L20 or Graham Elliott where over rated?

thanks,
Janet

VA Chef in Chicago for 2 nights (Oct. 9, 10), HELP!

I would also vote Topolobampo (else Frontera Grill if you can't get a Topo reservation; but only if you can arrive by 5. Make a beeline to the tables in the bar if it looks like the line ahead of you will fill the dining room). Hard to find their quality & style anywhere. BTW, has anyone else noticed the "Topo margarita" has been inconsistent at least this year? Did they lose that long time bartender, older gent?

If not Topo/Frontera, I like the Boka idea. I too had a great meal there earlier this summer. Skip L20 and Graham Elliott. Too contrived. In my mind, even Alinea is not as good as Grant's final days at Trio.

Blackbird it another special place. Don't bother with Everest; the dinosaur!

Never been to Arun or Charlie Trotters as I moved to town after their hey days and have been scared off by the so so reports. My favorite Charlie bad review was that young guy who wrote into eGullet ~ 4 years ago and Anthony Boudain posted to back him up. Precious thread!

Enjoy!

Oysters & Beer near 10pin (House of Blues)

Thanks, All!

We went to Shaw's and had a great time. My favorites:
- shrimp cocktail (super fresh, perfectly cooked jumbos with a great chunky cocktail sauce)

- lobster roll for a very reasonable $19 considering it was nicely stuffed (even *I* couldn't have fit more meat in the bun!) and they let me substitute asparagus for the fries. Unheard of! There must have been about 10-12 nice sized spears perfectly cooked -- steamed w no trace of any butter to detract from the flavor. This health nut was hopping! Even the coleslaw was way above average--perfect even. I've gotta go back and see if it my experience was a fluke. Thinking about it, I never had a such a satisfying lobster roll outside of Maine. One minor complaint, the meat was a tad too salty.

I appreciate your quick replies. Death to Fulton's!

PIT - Hoi Polloi - vegetarian restaurant

Do you think there's better vegetarian in Pittsburgh than Hoi Polloi?

PIT - Vivo, Pangea, Mortons

Hi folks,

I know these 3 are very different -- Vivo (in Bellevue), Pangea (in Shadyside) and Morton's steakhouse (downtown). But which would you say has the more talented kitchen?

thanks!

Oysters & Beer near 10pin (House of Blues)

Greetings CHI-hounds!

May I get some suggestions on where to take a dozen guys tomorrow (Friday) 3-5pm for a Happy Hour with good beer, seafood snacks (oysters, etc) and atmosphere? We're looking for some place to hang after 10pin bowling.

After favorite places?

Some one mentioned Shaw, Fultons or McCormicks. I'm not familiar with any except maybe Fulton's --if its that ridiculously priced seafood place where you go down a level to the dining room (that open ~ 3 yrs ago, served pricey entrees w no sides as i recall).

Price isn't too big a concern as long as it better than most.

Thank you!
Janet

ubuntu? been yet?

Hi folks!
Any reports? How's the food?

I'm out of the loop w/the wine country these days but used to love Terra, Cryus last year did not impress. Sadly, that's all I've tried. Sounds like I would be pleased with Ad Hoc. I really enjoyed Manresa (the Ubuntu chef's former home) last fall. Any comparisons to these spots is appreciated.

Thinking of bringing a group of 25-50 up midweek for late afternoon yoga class then dinner. Hopefully they have nice showers & such!

Thanks!
Janet
