Birthday dinner in north county- expensive but not stuffy

Boyfriend's birthday in a few days, don't want to go the Cheesecake Factory route. We live in north county, but I'm willing to drive if the place is great. I have a budget of around 200, I want to impress, but we are 24 yrs old and I don't want a stuffy restaurant. He doesn't like Ruth's Chris. I am tempted by mister a's (Bertrand?) but I fear it's too stuffy, plus it's kind of far. Any suggestions?

What is in the guac at (most) taco shops? [moved from San Diego board]

I've started to notice that guac at taco shops (examples including Mexico Viejo and Eriberto's in Oside), is not typical, "fresh" avocado that you could get at, say, Rubio's. This guac is smoother, and seems less avocado-ey than normal guac. What is this? Are they putting mayo or sour cream in there? I'm really hoping it's not mayo.

Looking for food (and parking) tips for the San Diego fair

Hi Beach Chick! I clicked on your name and found your post about the Tuesday two buck taste thing. Didn't know there were lobster rolls! Artichoke hearts sound great.

I'm considering taking the bus from my local Mira Costa. I've decided to leave at 7 pm! Thank you for your reply!

I see, thanks for clarifying. Wow, artichoke hearts on a stick sound right up my alley. I wonder if they were served with some kind of aoili or sauce? I didn't know Pink's was there! Great tips, thank you!

Thank you for your reply! Do you remember how you got into preferred parking? Is there a different entrance for that?

I also did think about whether taking the bus or the car would take less time. We have used the Mira Costa Cardiff parking/bus, but I assumed that parking there would be faster. I might consider doing that again, but a bus seems to move slower than my car...

Thank you so much for your reply! I was planning on leaving at 8:00, in the hopes that I'll be in Carlsbad by 9:30. I have to be there at 9:30 :-(

Edit to add: If you have any experience parking in their 'preferred parking', please share. I'm considering whether to park in regular ($10) or preferred ($15) parking, based on which would get me out of the park faster.

Looking for food (and parking) tips for the San Diego fair

We're going on July 4, and I'm determined to not make the same food-related mistakes I did last year (I did not enjoy the Gyro I got). Anyone have any tips on which food is best to eat at the fair? I noticed the bbq looked good, and I'm not too into the big turkey legs and nachos I saw others eating. I might settle on a hot dog. Any tips?

I did enjoy the funnel cake, but I think next time I'll get it sans fruit and whipped cream. The toppings are good, but it makes the cake soggy, and I end up searching for only the crispy pieces. Anyone else ever get the funnel cake with just powdered sugar?

Additionally, if anyone can answer my parking question, I'd greatly appreciate it. How much time do you allot for traffic when leaving the fair? I (unfortunately) have to leave early in the evening, and I have no idea how much time to allot for getting us out of the parking lot and onto the I-5, and then whatever traffic could be on the freeway! How long did it take you to get home after leaving the fair at night? I have to leave around 8:00 p.m.

San Diego nightlife?

I see. We were a group of 5. How large of a group would you suggest?

San Diego nightlife?

True. I live in north county anyway. Are you suggesting that tourists are the problem?

San Diego nightlife?

Hi all, I went to a nightclub (Stingaree) for the first time for a friend's birthday. I had fun, but I'm not too into the men touching and grinding without permission. I know nothing about nightlife, and I was saying to my friend, "there's got to be another way we can go dancing and drinking and not have to worry about guys touching us." Is there a way? I'm sorry if this is too prudish.

I've been to a few bars, but people don't really dance there. I'm just looking for an atmosphere that is a little less "sexy" than Stingaree. I found the guys there to be a tad aggressive. Any tips/advice? Thanks for reading.

Microwave Brownie in a Mug (single serving)

Could this be a way to use up packets of hot chocolate? Also, I have no vegetable oil, just canola. Substitute?

EDIT: Wow. Came back to answer my own question. My own bachelorette pantry is lacking, so I made these subs:

1.5 Tbs Canola oil (instead of veg)
3 Tbs from 1 packet of starbucks hot cocoa
1 Tbs brown sugar (instead of 3 Tbs granulated)

First birthday dinner with boyfriend- Ruth Chris alternative?

Thank you so much for the feedback! I love these ideas, so I have a lot to think about. My budget is about $60-$80 bucks. One thing I forgot to mention is that for my bday, he took me to Rei Do Gado. I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't give it 5 stars. Am I insane? I would just take him there since he likes it, but I figured for his bday I should be more original.

First birthday dinner with boyfriend- Ruth Chris alternative?

I feel like a dodo head replying to my empty thread- but I just got an idea from another thread in this forum. I might take him to the Burger Lounge in La Jolla. He does love burgers, and we usually go to the Counter. According to some, the Burger Lounge is better than the Counter. I'll keep the Burger Lounge in mind.

First birthday dinner with boyfriend- Ruth Chris alternative?

I would like to have a special evening with him, but I'm not sure if I can afford Ruth Chris (he's mentioned it before as a favorite). I consulted their website, hoping for some email newsletter that could possibly result in a coupon, but no dice. We're both students, I'm unemployed, but if I can't think of anything else, I could try getting some dough from my mom. Anyway, we live in north county, and if anyone knows of a wonderful steak place that's slightly cheaper than Ruth Chris, it would be greatly appreciated. I know I could just check yelp, but I don't appreciate those reviews as much as the feedback I could get from this forum. Thanks for reading!
