Quattro North End?

I live in the NE; you can do takeout from anywhere with only two exceptions that I am aware of. Neptune Oyster refuses to do oysters to go and the Daily Catch will not do takeout when there is a line.

I have done takeout at Quattro.

Coffee shop on the water

I came to the same conclusion of the SBUX yesterday--see my post below.

Coffee shop on the water

It's unclear whether you want a water view and/or outdoor space. If you just want to be near the water, the Starbucks on Atlantic Ave/Commercial St/Lewis Wharf in the NE/Waterfront fits the bill.

If you actually want to sit outside on the water, you can amble down to Christopher Columbus Park (or one of the many benches along the Harborwalk) or grab a bite or drink at Joe's American or the Fairmont.

Boston - Monday night, casual dinner, serious foodie

"Aquitaine- THE spot in the So. End when you're exhausted and you want to be taken care of. Classic French Bistro food beautifully done in a beautiful room, w/ gracious top notch service. South End."

I think Mr. Hamersley would have something to say about Aquitaine being "THE spot" in the South End.

90 college kids for dinner?

Maggiano's is never an option in my opinion.

Paramount and Trident alternatives

I think we need some geographic parameters. I am not one to travel for breakfast, but maybe you are.

North End for 18th birthday

Lucca has a separate room, but I am not a fan.
Prezza has a big table in the front; it is good, but pricey.
Taranta has multiple floors--you might be able to get a floor for your party. I like the food.

North End for 18th birthday

Fiore is large and a great space, but I do not find the food "adequate" for the prices. I only go there if it's summer and I can dine or drink on the roof.

one dinner downtown

I was there last night for a 5:30 dinner. There were six male customers in the dining room; five without jackets. The owner/sommelier, Chris, never wears a jacket or tie.

It is not "sceney" or loud, but this does not make it formal. I think the bar has been lowered so far. Many restaurants now have large bars, which frequently totally change the volume and vibe on a busy night. It also makes it so there are a lot of people at these restaurants who do not give a damn about the food, but are interested in members of the opposite sex. Troquet's format tends to attract an older and less boisterous crowd more interested in the food and wine than a night out on the town.

Is the service more formal at Troquet? Maybe, but that's a plus in my book.

I would go to Troquet. The wine program can't be beat, and I do not find it that formal.

Neptune Oyster Bar advice

This is good advice. I live in the NE; if you arrive before noon, you should be OK. I recently was there at noon on a Saturday and walked right in. At 12:15 there was a wait.

I want to eat at Neptune Oyster when I come to Boston

Arrive between 11:30 and noon, especially on a week day. Alternatively, arrive in the lull between lunch and dinner from 3-4, again on weekdays if possible.

Chow Finds in Arlington?

I will also add that Tango has a good wine list and competent wine service (the waiter was aware of the proper serving temp for red wine and offered to chill down the too warm bottle).

Penang run-down

I had visions of dirty restrooms, so did not read the original post for the first two days.

Happy Holidays!

Penang run-down

Your title is misleading. I read it with run-down as an adjective. You obviously mean to use the noun rundown.

Delicious lunch in Harvard Square?

I think Henrietta's Table is a great idea. I love the food; I wish they would improve the wine list.

Parker House versus Top of the Hub

Hamersleys. Based upon my visits, there are many older patrons who like it as much as I do.

The Top of the Hub is neither classic nor stately--it is just abysmal.

I think of the Parker House as a better place for a drink than for serious dining. If you do go, be sure to have some rolls and Boston cream pie.

Drinks Before Dinner in the North End

Bricco and Lucca are your best bets. However, I must add that I am not an expert on martinis.

It is if you order the famous roasted chicken.
I think Rialto is the priciest of those three.

Black Rose any good for breakfast?

It was a true neighborhood gem when Michael Scelfo (now at Russell House Tavern) was the chef in the early/mid 2000s. I believe that there have been two chefs since Mr. Scelfo left.

The last time I was there (about three years ago), the chef spent more time outside smoking and talking to bar patrons than cooking. My risotto arrived with chunks of unmelted cheese. Additionally, the silverware was not clean.

Anthony's (very casual) or Aragosta (higher end), both on Commercial St. (Aragosta is on Battery Wharf at the Fairmont off of Commercial).

No luck for reservations at Bondir- second place suggestions?

I actually put 7:00 in for two next Friday on Open Table. I think reservations are essential for a birthday dinner on a Friday. I came up with the following viable options, based on recent personal visits: Bergamot, Bustro du Midi, Blue Room, Erbaluce, Hamersley's, Harvest, Taranta, and Troquet.

Oleana, Craigie, and Hungry Mother have nothing within an hour of 7:00 PM. I have not been to West Bridge or Rendezvous, two suggestions made by others.
