Dougie's Opening in Great Neck

There was a sign on the front of the storefront once occupied by Cafe 2012 on Middle Neck Road
(near the movie theater) that stated that Dougie's was opening soon.

Veggie Patch

A good variety of vegetarian meat substitutes is distributed by Food For Life (the company that distributes Ezekiel bread). They have "chicken" patties and nuggets and "beef" hamburgers. Their products are pareve (Kaf K supervision), vegan, and contain less fat than a typical vegetarian meat substitute IMO. I have bought these products at Wild by Nature and Whole Foods.

Puzzler - Turmeric, Saffron - Kitniyot?

The OU does not consider tumeric to be Kitnyiot. Therefore, Pereg Tumeric is acceptable with an OUP.

Puzzler - Turmeric, Saffron - Kitniyot?

I believe that Pereg has OUP Tumeric.

Saving money on food for Passover

Shoprite in the New York Area has the usual Pesach sales (free or very cheap matzo with a $25 purchase). They also have a special of 38 cents/per lb. for Empire Frozen Turkety if yoy spend $300 over the course of the month around Pesach time. This is not too difficult since they also sell fresh meat under reliable hasgacha.

Whole Flax Seed For Passover

I contacted the Star K about using flax seed for Passover. I was sent the following response:

GRAINS
The following grains (whole grains only) may be used on Passover. Purchase from manufacturers that do not process chometz grains. Consumers are required to carefully check grains BEFORE PESACH for extraneous
matter.

Flax

Does anyone know of any companies that process flax seeds that are not processed in the same facility as chometz grains (this knocks out Bob's Red Mill, Arrowhead Mills, and Nature's Path flax seed)?

Kosher Products for Passover

I haven't been able to find any amaranth brand that is totally processed separate from chometz grains.

It would be good if there was KFP amaranth since it is gluten free, high in protein and can be milled into flour, and popped (like mini popcorn).

ISO Kitniyot in NYC

Shoppers' Delite in Great Neck or A to Z Kosher in Hillcresr have kitnyiot KFP.

Take out for Passover - Long Island

Any Interesting New Passover Products?

These interesting (not the regular Haddar or Lieber variety) Pereg spices are OUP:

Turmeric, Hawaje, schwarma spice, and cumin.

Are Healthy and Kosher Mutually Exclusive?

There is no connection between the laws of kashrut and unhealthy food. There is healthy kosher food as well as unhealthy kosher food. However, as moegreene indicated, there may not be as much availability of commercially prepared kosher food as there could be.

Are Healthy and Kosher Mutually Exclusive?

I I apologize for sounding very preachy, but it is very important to have healthy Kosher food options available because of the increasing incidence of Type 2 diabetes and childhood obesity in the Kosher eating community.

It is also important to expose children to healthy Kosher eating options in order for them to have a better chance of having healthy eating habits in the future.

Kosher certified Surströmming or Miracle Fruit?

There is pure miracle fruit and there is processed miracle fruit in tablet form. therefore, you would have to determine if you are purchasing raw miracle fruit or a derivative of it.

Any Interesting New Passover Products?

Haddar has KFP liquid smoke.

How about Cheers? Or La Difference?

In the 1990's there was a Glatt Kosher Mediterranean Restaurant near the NY Public Library that no longer exists.

Ideas for Passover 2011 new products

I would like to have the availabilty of certain products that are available to commercial food companies for Passover, but not to consumers such as tapioca starch.

Any Interesting New Passover Products?

I don't want to start too much contraversy, but I saw quinoa from Israel (I don't remember the brand) that had a Kosher for Passover designation from one supervisory agency and a Kosher during the year, but not for Passover hasgacha from a different Kosher agency on the same package.

Remember the Garden Cafeteria on the lower East Side?

miriam mizakura's shalom japan - glatt kosher restaurant from the 80s-22 wooster st

I remember Shalom Japan. The owner who was Japanese and Jewish would often tell patrons that they didn't look Jewish. I think that Shalom Japan eventually relocated to Queens and then eventually closed.

Speaking of being ahead of its time, there was a Glatt Kosher Indian restaurant on Coney Island Avenue in the late 80's or early nineties. It didn't survive for very long.

Coconut Flour for Passover

Here is a coconut flour that is kosher during the year:

Maybe someone could find out if has the potential to be kosher for Passover.

Coconut Flour for Passover

As per Vallevin 's suggestion, I decided to start a new thread for this topic.

Coconut flour is gluten free, non kitnyiot, and non gebrokhts. It would generally be a better alternative for Passover than potato starch because it is low carb(compared to other flours), contains fiber, and contains protein. The only problem is that it can't currently be found Kosher for Passover. Perhaps, it will be available Kosher for Passover if there is enough of a demand.

Here is some info on coconut flour:

Quinoa flour for Pesach?

There is not enough of a market for it. Even though the Star K and the CRC permit it, not everyone accepts it as being non Kitnyot. It would be great if it was more universally accepted.

Coconut Flour is also another non chometz , non gobrokts, and non kitnyot alternative to chometz flour. However, it is not available kosher for Passover.

Teff?

Quinoa processing is generally kept separate from wheat processing in order to maintain its status as a gluten free food. In the past, very few companies strictly( for stricter Passover requirements) followed this. As a result, only 1 or 2 companies' quinoa was considered acceptable for Passover.

According to the CRC website amaranth should also be ok for Passover use. However, there don't seem to be any companies that keep amaranth separate from other grains.

Quinoa flour for Pesach?

You would have to probably grind your own flour. It seems to be difficult to find flours of substances that can be kosher for Passover like amaranth flour and coconut flour.
