Want Real 'Cue in ATL

Like ted said, Swallow at the Hollow used to be excellent but the BBQ has gone downhill a lot IMO. The sides are still good, mac & cheese there is one of my favorites.

Bub-ba-Q has locations in Woodstock and Jasper and they're Q is some of the best I've had. Their ribs actually taste like smoked pork, as opposed to tasting of just the dry rub, smoke and sauce. I go to the Woodstock location pretty regularly and it's my current favorite.

Lunch and Dinner Downtown near Aquarium/Centenial Park

The area that CNN/Aquarium are in is called the Luckie Marietta District or LMD. I'm not very familiar with dining in the area but check out this link for some info. http://luckiemariettadistrict.com

I've eaten at Der Biergarten and thought the food was excellent but I thought the restaurant was trying to be a little 'fancier' than a biergarten should be. There's also a Ted's Montana Grill in the area that a lot of poeple like but I haven't personally tried it. McCormick & Schmick's is in CNN Center, been too long since I've eaten there to give a personal review.

Hopefully others can have some better personal recommendations but there are several choices in the area that should be walkable. Enjoy your stay in Atlanta!

Looking for some great casual restaurants for my first time in Atlanta

Definitely lots of choices for casual dining.

I have to say at The Varsity having the car hops take care of you is fun but it's also nice to go inside to see the history of the restaurant and pics of a lot of the famous people that have eaten there. The Varsity has a great history.

One of my favorite places for casual dining is Taco Mac. Best wings in Atlanta IMO (I know others would argue this :-)) and great burgers and sandwiches. Many non-locals are confused by the name Taco Mac, it's a sports bar type place and not a taco joint. There is a story behind that, of course. If you're at the aquarium there's a Taco Mac inside CNN Center and if you're in the area anyhow you really should check out CNN Center.

Enjoy your trip!

Recommendation for Restaurant Gift Certificate

Yes, my mistake, I didn't read the qualifying info. Not sure any of my suggestions will meet the price requirement.

Recommendation for Restaurant Gift Certificate

There are a few other restaurant groups in Atlanta and getting a card from one of them will give you (your siter) a lot of good choices. Buckhead Life is one, CentraArchy is another and there's also Rathbun's - although not a "group" like the others he does have three restaurants to choose from and Kevin Rathbun Steak is ranked as one of the best steakhouses in the city.

My personal recommendation would be Rathbun's or Buckhead Life, excellent choices with either of those.

Downtown Atlanta Bars (a little divey okay)?

Trader Vic's makes a great Mai Tai, the "original" Mai Tai depending on who you ask, but the scene is upscale Polynesian. The actual bar area is pretty small with most of the space being taken up by the restaurant.

If you don't mind heading up to the northern suburbs I'm sure Dixie Tavern in Smyrna/Marietta area would fit what you're looking for. Waitresses in cut-off jeans and flannel shirts with local musical talent (this is the place where Zac Brown Band got their start and Zac still drops in quite regularly just to hang out) on stage in the center of all the action. If you're looking for loud and rowdy Southern folks ready to party then this is the place.

Looking for a Bread Pudding recipe

Thanks for the info. I'll try that. I know she didn't use pound cake, I actually think she used just sandwich bread. I was going to try challah, hadn't thought about brioche but that's a good idea, too.

Looking for a Bread Pudding recipe

I'm pretty sure she used store bought bread for this. I 'think' it was just white sandwich bread, but not positive about that.

Looking for a Bread Pudding recipe

It's actually been a while since I've made it and have to be honest that I don't recall what all I've tried. My main issue was with consistency/density of the pudding. All the ones I made seem to come out too thin, more of a scooping pudding than a slicing one. However it seems like if I try to cut back a bit on the wet ingredients it just seemed to be too dry for a bread pudding. Even though what my mom made was very dense it maintained the moist creaminess of a bread pudding.

Looking for a Bread Pudding recipe

My mom taught me to cook a lot of great things as I was growing up and she passed on a lot of great recipes. One recipe I never got from her was her bread pudding, I just can't get it right. Does anyone have suggestions based on this description?

The bread pudding was very dense, almost like a pound cake density, but very moist. It was sweet but not overly so, lots of cinnamon and nutmeg. She'd make it in a 9x13 pan, I remember her taking it out of the oven and rubbing an entire stick of butter over the top and letting it melt down into the pudding. :-) She'd let it cool just a bit then serve it up it big pieces. Heaven on a plate.

My mom passed away in '92. I've tried for almost 20 years to recreate this and can't get it right. Everyone in my family remembers this bread pudding and I'd love to make it at Christmas. Any help is appreciated.

Best brazilian steakhouse for the money for a group of 10-12?

I've enjoyed Sal Grosso when I've gone, probably 5-6 times. The price is definitely better than Fogo and it's usually much less crowded. If you're going with a group and you want to watch price I think Sal Grosso is your best bet.

I hate it when steakhouses don't respect the fish!

I've been to New York Prime a few times and I've not been overly impressed with their steaks. For what is considered by many to be one of Atlanta's finest I don't see it. Don't get me wrong... I've always enjoyed my meal, and I'm usually with great company, but it's never been excellent in my opinion.

Four of us went on Saturday, I had a NY Strip and everyone else had filets, two of my friends commented their filet was overcooked. I don't think they compensate for the fact they serve on 375 degree plates, I'm sure this is even more noticeable when having fish.
