Hard Hat XI

Speaking of pizza takeovers, also on the way to lunch today I saw a banner up at Pizza Bistro (Gracy Farms & MoPac near Taco Deli http://goo.gl/maps/iBIXi ) saying it was reverting back to being a Mangia Pizza.

So I went to Polvo's north location off of Bratton Ln. for lunch today and I saw that the brick & mortar version of Garbo's (Lobster Truck) looks ready to open. It's in the same spot where Gumbo's originally was and that was later Yoli's Place and then who knows what. Here is a map because I have learned my lesson. :-)

Hehe, sorry for the confusion. It's here http://goo.gl/maps/1w7Ze about where it says "Dream Dinners". Next time I will locate it using more Chowhound-ish places like Stuffed and Noble Sandwich Co. instead of DQ and Subway. :-)

Kohnami at 183 & Anderson Mill (former Hoover's, and Ryan's Steakhouse location) is pushing up daisies. There is a lockout notice on the door.

There is a sign up for a place called "Zaitoon Mediterranean Grill" at 620 & Lake Creek behind the Dairy Queen and Subway there.

Best steamed Alaskan King Crab legs / Snow crab legs?

You can probably cross Freda's Seafood Grille off of the list because the crab legs I had there were boiled and not steamed so they were watery and washed out. I should have known better than to order them because the menu actually says "boiled". My bad was assuming that they would be boiled with seasoning or that maybe they actually meant steamed. No, straight-up boiled and flavorless.

Antimo Caputo 00 Pizza Flour

I have purchased it at Central Market on Lamar before. I went through a phase of making the Jeff Varasano pizza dough and had been ordering Caputo 00 online. I felt pretty dumb when I found I could have been buying it locally much cheaper and easier. Take this with a grain a of salt though, because it was at least 3 years ago and I have no idea if they still carry it.

Dim Sum

I think there is also Ivy's Deli by Ikea. No idea if it's good or bad because I haven't been, just seen it driving past.

Tamale House to close

Sounds almost exactly like what Dot Hewitt's family said when she passed and they chose not to keep Dot's Place open.

Local Bottled Water Question...Austin

HEB (a Texas grocery chain) carries quite a variety of waters. This is a local one I can think of offhand that I didn't see in your list.

Austin Food Memories

One time we had such a long wait at the Magic Time Machine that we ordered a pizza and had it delivered to their waiting room-- they said no one had ever done that before and they were impressed enough that they gave us free beers to go with it.

Calabash on Manor Rd. made me realize that it was possible for salads to taste good. Bitter End was the other place that had one of the first salads I liked.

I liked the colanders-for-lampshades idea at the defunct Cafe Spiazzo in Westlake so much that I duplicated it at home.

One night I met some friends at Stelline's in northwest Austin and it ended up turning into a first date with a friend-of-a-friend and we went out for the next year and a half.

Stopping by the Fillin' Station for dinner after swimming all afternoon at Barton Springs.

Pot roast at Barbara Ellen's on highway 71.

Alligator Grill. We used to go there for happy hours after work. They had 10-cent crawfish and 10-cent peel & eat shrimp specials.

BBQ Outfitters Big Green Egg Festival

I went to an eggfest with a friend last year out at the Iguana Grill on 620 and it was actually a pretty good time. The food did vary a bit with the skills of the folks who cooked and I sampled things I both liked and disliked. I think some folks try to stand out by cooking things that aren't necessarily suited for a grill (like the eggrolls you mentioned).

Last year at least there was no line for beverages and I think the only thing we had to wait for was face painting for the kiddo and then a pretty long wait after the event for my friend to pick up the egg he bought at the end of the day. I think they gave them out in registration order and he decided he wanted an egg last minute. I want to say it was $35/person last year so maybe they had more folks working the beverage service?

As for the egg itself it seemed to be pretty decent quality heavy ceramic. I helped disassemble it and load it into a truck and then set it up again on the other end. I've had some good brisket cooked on it at my friend's house over the past year, but I know he added a computer-controlled fan contraption to it to control the temperature.

Bob's Chop and Steak House?

I've gotten dry aged ribeyes at the Lakeline farmer's market before. I want to say it was $20-something / lb and from Winters Beef.

El Patio is 60

Maybe that's it-- I always get the guacamole and a couple of their flat tacos with queso drizzled over the top on those fresh fried tortillas.

El Patio is 60

I'd happily eat there, but I very rarely do because if I'm driving "all the way into town" (I live up in WilCo) and I want Mexican food I go to Cisco's or Habanero or Polvo's.

Kiss my grits !!

The north location of Hoover's used to be close to my house and I pretty much ate my way through the whole menu and came to the conclusion that Hoover's is best for breakfasts and chicken fried steak.

Where to get good smoked turkey?

They are indeed inside the mall as it says. We stumbled across them the other day and sampled some meats and cheeses and bought some fudge and jerky.

Aged beef?

I have gotten dry aged ribeyes at the Lakeline Farmer's Market from Winters Family Beef.

I haven't been to the Farmers Market in a while so you might want to check their web site to see if they have a schedule etc.

A Starbucks! Never thought I'd see the day. The Starbucks at Lake Creek and the 183 Southbound access road closed. No worries, Starbucks fans-- there is another one a couple blocks down at Anderson Mill. Heh.

I'm actually glad to see it close. I don't really care one way or the other about Starbucks but so many idiots would just SIT in the turnaround lane and WAIT for all three lanes of traffic on the access road to empty so they could shoot directly across all three lanes into the Starbucks. So annoying.

Where I have recently eaten in Austin and what I wish I can get

If that's the place near 35 and 290 that used to be an Outback, I went there a few years ago and I want to say their grills were electric and used what looked like toaster oven heating elements in the bottom. It was long enough ago that I don't recall what all we ordered but we didn't end up with lettuce and ssamjang even after asking. It was a few years ago and I will happily go back and try them again because in my book pretty much any KBBQ is yummy. Thanks for the suggestion!

I know I'm not going to make this sound appetizing, but here goes... most mac salad in Hawaii seems to be very over-boiled and it has a lot of mayo in it and it's kind of sweet so it doesn't *seem* as much like a starch as it does just something sweet and fatty. Yeah, I didn't make that sound good-- but somehow it is in the context of a plate lunch. :-)

Where I have recently eaten in Austin and what I wish I can get

I wish there was better Korean BBQ available. A place where you can cook over actual charcoal instead of frying it. A place that has ssamjang and lettuce for making ssam. My first stop whenever I go to SF or LA is at that kind of KBBQ place because I haven't been able to find one here.

I grew up in Hawaii and I miss plate lunch. I'd even settle for Zippy's at this point. :-) I also miss gyudon.

I wish there were more independent deli's in Austin. We have a few but it would be nice to have more so it's less of a production to go find one. I also echo lixlix's point about bakeries for the exact same reasons.
