Where to buy beef ribs

Colfax on the 440 sometimes has them but as was already stated, be prepared to pay through the nose for 'em.

East Africa Ethiopian Restaurant (NDG)

Quick follow up on this. They now have a website.

Ironically, NONE of the numbers listed in this thread are there.

Rather they are using (514) 419 7165

Party Venue

Is a private room absolutely necessary? If you want inexpensive I guess there's Arahova on L'Acadie that has a private room upstairs. There's also Roasters at Marche Central with a private balcony upstairs.

HOWEVER, if a private room isn't 100% necessary, I'd recommend Aux Cinq Parfums right off of L'Acadie. It is a smaller restaurant that's BYOB and they have some great food. For 25 people, they'd probably section off the far side of the place for you guys so some privacy can be achieved.

How about Chateau Taillefer Lafon? It is on a vineyard in Laval. I had my mother's 50th there last summer and it was very, very good. The location is spectacular.

Nouveau Hellas.

No thanks. Low rent Greek food is a dime a dozen here in Montreal. All we needed was another one....

Butchers that sell ground chicken and/or lamb at good price? (And also need a place to buy jamaican jerk seasoning)

Most Maxi stores sell Jamaican Jerk seasoning if they have an International section. I know the Maxi on St Martin in Laval has a HUGE selection of Jamaican spices.

Where to find Sambal Bajak?

Marche Hawaii.

Go to the back of the store where they have fruits and veggies. Find the ginger. In front of you there will be a line of freezers containing shrimp, etc. To the right of that row in the sections closest to you, all of the Sambals are inventoried.

They have Bajak, Oelek, Tumis, Asam and a few others.

Chinese garlic.

Yup. It is next to the rows and rows of Chinese prepackaged garlic. You can tell the difference since it has a slightly purple exterior colour. It is of course more expensive than the Chinese garlic but the cloves are absolutely massive.

Tried some out last night actually in a Dry Garlic Spare Rib recipe. It doesn't have that slightly acidic taste like much of the Chinese stuff. The only way I can describe it is "smooth".

Chinese garlic.

Bumping this up. Marche Colfax in Laval just received a shipment of California garlic with the stems still attached.

I bought two heads and while I haven't tried it yet, the cloves are VERY tight which is always a good sign of fresh garlic.

avocado oil in Montreal?

Let us know how you like it if you find it!

Just tried their San Marzano tomatoes tonight and I was once again impressed by the quality of these products.

Picked up some of their caramelized red onion chutney too and I can't wait to try it.

Adonis usually carries non China garlic but as I mentioned in another thread, their latest batch is from the wrong neck of the woods...

avocado oil in Montreal?

The Loblaws on Henri Bourassa near L'Acadie carried it for a while but sold out VERY quick. They may have restocked by now. Supposedly these Black Label products are quite highly regarded in certain circles.

Cheapest grocery store for fruits and veggies?

Bingo. Adonis is the only place I can usually find Made in Quebec garlic other than at JTM. EVen last winter their garlic was from Argentina so I was shocked nonetheless.

Cheapest grocery store for fruits and veggies?

Personally, I go to Fruiterie 440, Adonis or Sami in Laval.

Adonis has amazing quality even in the winter but just this last week I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Made in China garlic on their shelves.

Fruiterie 440 in Laval or next to Galeries D'Anjou. Good selection but the quality goes down in the winter. I love going there in the summer since they have the largest selection (other than a local market) of Quebec grown fruits and veg.

Sami Fruits in Laval. Amazing selection. Rock bottom prices. Sometimes quality can be touch and go though

Large supermarkets: I'd never, ever buy my fruits and veg from there.

Where to find pure maple extract in Montreal

Bought some at Costco on L'Acadie a few months back. I have no idea if they still have it.

Opinions on best Thai food?

Aux Cinq Parfums off of L'Acadie is one of my favs and it serves up a good fusion of Thai, Cantonese, etc.

Another option is on the South Shore: Golden Bowl.

Anyone try Ristorante Oggi in Dollard des Ormeaux? It's currently on TeamBuy's daily deals.

I'll agree with this one. Really not all that great at all and I'd rather pay $60 for a meal I loved rather than $25 for what they serve.

Ethiopian kolo

I would try Marché Africana on Jarry or Marche D'Afrique which I believe is on Jean Talon. I've been to both and either should have what you're looking for. :)

West Island Butchers

Short ribs certainly aren't cheap, that's for sure. I haven't asked Colfax to butterfly them for me since I usually do it myself but I can confirm that they are fresh, not frozen.

The only issue with beef short ribs is that at the beginning of each day, like most butchers, Colfax usually cuts up a set number of beef carcases. The result is a ton of certain cuts of meat but things like Short Ribs are in "short" (ha ha) supply and get snapped up quickly. You can always ask the guys behind the counter (or window in Colfax's case) if there are any more but sometimes the only option is a frozen portion.

Hope that helps.

West Island Butchers

If you are near one of the highways, taking a trek up to Marche Colfax in Laval on the 440 (between the 13 and 15) is well worth the journey. They have good quality cuts and very reasonable prices since they are a wholesaler to restaurants and hotels.

Their custom cut counter isn't open all the time so I recommend you go on a Saturday or Sunday when it is in full swing. They can also fill custom orders for things like whole Brisket, Kobe Beef, etc.

For reference sake, a good 5lb pork shoulder / butt roast typically costs under $10.00 and their sausages are quite good as well. I find their Beef Short Ribs to be slightly expensive but then again, I haven't seen those anywhere else for less.

EDIT to add link to their site: http://www.colfax.ca/GM/History.aspx

keurig k cups

I know I am resurrecting an oldish thread here but I have to add my findings after going through a few of the recommendations listed above for individual K-Cups. I hope this helps others (like myself) who found this thread via a Google search.

Boutique Electrik: They have individual K-Cups but with a VERY limited selection (only 12-14 selections) at both stores I went to. Of those 12-14 selections, six were sold out with the staff unwilling to open another box.

Cafe Gran Sasso: HIGHLY recommended. I counted 115 selections (see crappy cell phone picture attached) which are either available in individually picked mixed lots of 24 or in full cartons of 24. The price is also the lowest I've seen at $15 tax included for 24 which at $0.62 per cup sure as heck beats Future Shop, Home Outfitters and even many online sellers. The staff there is also VERY friendly and was more than willing to give their input about recommended flavors and even offered to brew a few for me to try out.

Gran Sasso may be a bit off the beaten trail (Cote Vertu, west of the 40, right before Purolator)
but I'll be shopping there again. Count on it.

Hope this helps people. :)
