Remember Gampy's Monte Cristo sandwich with the raspberry sauce?

Nice to hear fondness for this item. There's a bakery in my hometown in upstate NY that serves such a dish, powdered sugar and raspberry sauce and all.

A vegan, a person who's gluten free, someone with a nut allergy and an anorexic walk into a bar…

But when I saw the title, I knew I'd probably like it, and that it was probably braised carrots. So it does serve some use to have a familiar touchstone in the title.

What foods have traveled in your carry-on?

A big ristra of fresh chilies purchased in Santa Fe. I could smell them all the way back to D.C. Another time I brought back a whole muffaletta from Central Grocery in New Orleans. Then there was the canned cassoulet from the South of France.

How do I make PERFECT scrambled eggs?

I like Gordon Ramsay's method of making them in a small saucepan with creme fraiche. He takes the pan off the heat element a lot to insure they're not overdone.

Might be heading to Bethesda, thinking about crab cakes

3. Yes. I work in Bethesda and I always see one of those Vamoose buses loading in the morning on Waverly St, one block off of Wisconsin Ave. Their web site has more details and booking: www.vamoosebus.com

Adoboloco Hot Sauce Is Our Favorite Burrito Blaster

The "after tasting" photo of the bottles shows which flavors you favored too. I'll have to pick up one of those at WF.

Anyone use Plated/ Blue Apron/ Hello Fresh? What Other choices are in the area?

Sorry for the late reply Kris. Yeah, definitely. And it turned me on to some things that I had not tried before, like the grain Farro.

Anyone use Plated/ Blue Apron/ Hello Fresh? What Other choices are in the area?

I have a friend who began purchasing from Blue Apron last summer. Part of the reason was that I was convalescing from a hip revision at her house and she wanted me healthy and out of there ASAP! She likes to cook but hates to shop. At the time you had a limited choice from Blue Apron: either vegetarian, or meat, poultry and fish. She does not eat fish, so it was always vegetarian. It was pretty good. Now, they have moderated their choices so if you don't eat fish, you can choose dinners that include meat and poultry but not fish, and I've had a couple of those lately. There was a period in early fall where it seemed like they were giving out the bottom of the produce bin, but that has improved as of late. The dinners were supposed to be for two, but we found that we could invite a couple over we are friends with and have enough food for four. Some of it is fantastic, some not so much, but I liked the concept. I saw the guys from Plated on Shark Tank, and I couldn't see how their concept could succeed.

What discontinued products do you miss?

Progresso Escarole Soup seems to have been discontinued, I ate that a lot as a kid.

CHOW Reviews: Cuisinart Smart Stick Variable Speed Hand Blender (CSB-79)

Glad to see that this one comes apart for cleaning just like my older Smart Stick that I bought refurbished. That way you can hold the removable end that gets the eggs, etc all over it upside down in the sink. Or, just fill a beaker with soapy water as others have suggested and give it a whirl.

Event catering that won't break the bank?

I used Lebanese Bakery in Alexandria for a birthday party, it was appreciated by the guests and I could actually afford it!

G by Mike Isabella - Report

If they're going to use decent cuts for the 'wishes, fine. Otherwise it smacks too much of either throwing scraps to the peasants, or someone in a meeting saying "Hey, I know how we can take a smaller loss on the leftovers!"

Foods/drinks/snacks you sneak into a movie theater...

I smuggle cough drops into theatres so that in the event I have a tickle in my throat, I don't disturb the other paying patrons.

Cassoulet?

Tom, do you mean you put the chicken in the broiler with the PPP, or the pan sans chicken?

I haven't had cassoulet since I spent a night in the Grand Hotel de la Opera Tolouse.

Novel Approach to Turkey Roasting

A friend was telling me tonight that he nailed a perfect bird by removing the legs and braising them separately, until the meat fell off the bones, which also gave him a quantity of nice stock to make gravy with.

High End Cookware That's Easy To Clean?

Thanks for the replies all. By "easy to clean", I'm thinking no harder to clean than her present Calphalon pieces. Cast iron would be too heavy.

So far, All-Clad SS is in the lead. I'm also aware of other cookware like Mauviel and the already mentioned Demeyere and DeBuyer.

High End Cookware That's Easy To Clean?

I have a friend who's Calphalon Anodized pieces are showing some wear and she's interested in getting new cookware. She knows that it does not make sense to buy an expensive non-stick item, as it will just wear out at the same rate as the cheap stuff. She is experienced at cooking and has a wonderful kitchen to work in with great appliances.

But if it's too hard to clean, that's a dealbreaker. Anyone know of anything that doesn't tend to get an impenetrable plaque of burned food after every use?

Is there a GREAT Bloody Mary Mix ???

Since I can't get Wegman's Spicy Vegetable juice anymore, I like to get Trader Joe's Garden Patch, their version of V-8 and depending on my mood, put in celery salt (a must...that's a default ingredient), maybe worcheshire or soy sauce, maybe some hot sauce, a little lemon juice, to taste.

If I'm feeling wild, I will do what other posters do and put in some pickle or olive juice.

Freezing food in little cubes

Not in ice trays, so OT I guess, but I freeze chipotle peppers in adobo sauce on a sheet of wax paper or parchment paper, then put them in individual containers of some kind. Ice trays would work.
