Best Ginger Ale?

"Q" Ginger is very good.

POLL: Can you walk to an actual grocery store?

Northern VA:

I can walk next door to Trader Joe's (about 5 min to get there), or cross the highway (carefully) to go to a Whole Foods.

Tandoor in Arlington - Report

Too bad, I also went to Tandoor in GeoTwn during the 80s and it was pretty good. This sounds very unlike that experience.

Bethesda visit this week - need some quick current rec's

I second the suggestion for Cava Mezze Grill on Bethesda Ave, another option is a rice bowl that you can get other things over, which I liked.
Additionally, if you want to try coal-oven pizza, a place called Haven just opened up on Wisconsin Ave not too far from your hotel, it serves the New Haven style "tomato pies" etc. Haven't tried it myself, but looks worth a try.

Eataly To Open In DC During 2012

Access to Georgetown is a nightmare already. They'd be cutting themselves off at the knees to choose that site.

When is Burger King going to realize that their fries SUCK?

They changed the fries again. I ended up needing a snack several hours before Thanksgiving dinner, so I got a cheeseburger and fries off the value menu. Cheeseburger was what it always is. The fries though? Longest ones were 2 inches long, and there were not many of those. They had an empty fry basket and gave me the nubs!! Jerks. It had been a year since I went to a BK, I think it will be a long time before I go back.

Burger King Chef's Choice - Horrific

I went to BK for the first time in a year the other day. I bought off the value menu (It was Thanksgiving and I wouldn't be cooking for a few hours, and needed some blood sugar boost). Cheeseburger and their "new" fries.
The cheezburger was what I expected for a dollar, but the fries...never mind the taste, the longest ones were 2 inches long. It was a bag of nubs!!! Thanks a lot BK.

Will barbecue ever go upscale and gourmet?

Yes, there's a Hill Country here in DC now, and you can run up a considerable tab easily.

Lee Kum Kee Premium Soy Sauce...sallllty!

Since my post, I have experimented a bit, and my fridge currently holds a bottle of Lee Kum Kee Dark Soy Sauce, and a bottle of Trader Joe's (regular) Soy Sauce. I've learned to mix a smaller amount of the saltier varieties with the other ingredients in my dipping sauces, cutting with sesame oil, for example.

Bacon my mail

Ha, I too thought the same of your post title as @Bigley9.

La Quercia has some Tamworth bacon.

Corn Beef Guy Food Truck in Olney

I might have to visit my friend who lives around there, good excuse to hit it up!

Death of shared cheese at Sardi's in NY; why can't US serve shared terrine's, Amuse Buche items like the French?

The scale of the U.S. market, 17 times larger in population than France, may make even the most basic of regulations pertaining to this practice impossible to monitor.

The revolting messes in back of the house revealed on a show like Kitchen Nightmares show existing standards are not meaningfully enforced, and corners are cut and the diner is the recipient of who-knows-what.

An Essay on Banquette Seating in Restaurants

Thanks for posting, I agree wholeheartedly. And I'll add that, somehow, the seats on one side of said banquettes are never at proper dining height.

Popular flavors that you don't care for

Hazelnuts. So that means I don't like the very popular Nutella.

Coconut. The milk is OK in Indian sauces, but the shredded stuff, esp when snuck into something like chocolate cookies is something that doesn't appeal to me.

Cheese Curds!

I love Poutine! And can usually get curds at the Farmer's Market.

The gravy is the challenge.

Embarrassingly dumb Forbes.com article on overpriced restaurant foods

The Forbes mentality at work.

Scottsdale for 5th Anniversary

I just found this post and was surprised Cowboy Ciao was not mentioned earlier.

Ginger Ice Cream

I like the Ginger selection of the Haggen-Dazs Five ice creams.

expired ketchup

It will definitely keep longer in the fridge than out. I usually use mine up well before the expiration date : ) . But if you have any doubt, just chuck it and buy another.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 4th quarter 2011 [OLD]

I've used the pizza dough, best to buy the plain white one, even then you have to wrestle with it a bit to get it to shape.

Pizza with Cracker Like Crust

I assure you the Pie-tanza in Falls Church also has the thin & crispy crust.

Childhood foods you would *totally* eat now...

Devil Dogs, and I've been trying to remember what Tang tasted like. I loved those Melody chocolate cookies too. Progresso Escarole soup, they seem to have discontinued that one.

Lebanese Taverna Market Take-Out

That's good to hear, it's been awhile, so I need to stop in and get dinner one of these evenings.

NY Times Magazine Food & Drink Issue

LOL, good imitation, Roxlet

Tyson's Corner's Dining

Nostros is a Greek restaurant in Tysons that is getting some positive remarks on other boards, to the point where I want to try it.

recommendation for yellow curry powder brand? (or recipe?)

Another vote for Penzey's.

Soup Downtown

Have you looked into The Soupergirl's offerings? I believe they deliver around DC.

HK 8/22

Yeah, I enjoyed that too.

Cost of Fresh Tomatoes at Farmers Markets

I stopped at a roadside stand just outside DC in MD on the way home to VA from work and paid $3 per pound. They were OK, but thickskinned, and the guy swore they were from a local farm town. They did make good BLTs.

I haven't been to the farmer's markets this year, they're just too much for my budget.

Patak's Indian products...yay or nay?

Tried one of their jarred curry sauces from the supermarket once.

It overwhelmingly tasted of one spice that I may have tasted in only a minor role in a curry, if at all, whether I made the curry or ordered it in an Indian restaurant. So out it went, it was just not appealing.
