With the holidays and the cool weather (for LA) setting in, I'd love to go out for a great afternoon hot chocolate! I searched the board before posting and most posts are at least 3-5 years old. Ideally it would be like Marie Belle or more european style, full dairy is good, but nice to have non-dairy options as well. Thinking places like The Alcove in Los Feliz Village, Larchmont Larder, Larchmont Bungalow, The Trails, W Hotel? Thanks!

Best Take Away in or around Soho [London]

I'll be spending an extended stay later this year working in Soho. Lots of working lunches and dinners. I am ideally looking places that serve organic, gluten free, macrobiotic, veg or vegan options. Not all of the above at once, but a selection would be nice. Occasional meat, chicken and fish are options. So far I've managed to sleuth out the Leon Restaurants, Whole Foods, Saf in Whole Foods, Beatroot Vegetarian, Govindas, Vitao, Maoz, Benito's Hat, Zilli Green, (not certain about take away at Zilli), These all seem to be within reasonable walking distance. What am I missing? Any other suggestions? Japanese, I've seen Koya on this board do they do take away? What about meze? Thanks in advance.

Cheers!

Blood Orange... Anything! What's Good?

das ubergeek is spot on, it's not blood orange season. however if you must have your fix for an easy solution try ciao bella sorbetto or bars. they will due in a pinch. widely available; wfs, gelsons, paviliions, bristol farms, and i'm certain many more large markets.

GOOD gluten-free hamburger buns. Any in Hollywood?

Thanks all. So far at TJs, Whole Foods no buns. I might try the english muffins that I saw at WF, that seems to be the closest for an occasional bun hankering.

GOOD gluten-free hamburger buns. Any in Hollywood?

I love burgers for the summer; salmon, turkey, veggie, grilled portobello. I eat them mostly with brown rice, on top of kale or wrapped in lettuce. Sometimes you just gotta have a bun. But its gotta be gluten-free and frankly, what is available in stores is really lacking. And I am not going to turn the oven on. Thanks!

Yamashiro's Farmers Market

We have family friends that live up in this area. I drive up to their house at least once a week. It is not, I repeat, NOT a place to walk to. Narrowish road with lots of blind corners. Thankfully, the Yamashiro folks have figured this out. Driving in and parking is easy. It is a lovely way to spend a Spring, Summer evening - what a view! I only look forward to the market getting bigger.

Little Door & Little Next Door

The patio at The Little Door is just too delightful to not go. I do suggest sitting at the bar, having a glass of wine or bubbly, getting an appetizer or their cheese plate and soak it up. Its fun at night with the low lights being half inside and outside :) Little Next Door is great for their to go items, I am partial to their Blood Orange Marmalade, IMO it rivals June Taylor's.

How to make my kids chowish? They started out that way...... what happened?

I am a bit ahead of you in this ongoing process, my son is 12. What you are describing is totally typical. Our best laid plans and aspirations for our offspring as parents but alas they have other ideas. Just wait until they go to school and get exposed to all the good and bad things their peers are eating!

I agree with cherlotw, you just have to keep trying. But you also need to relax about it. The current selection that you have listed is really good for their age. Children and the species have been around far longer than us and we wouldn't be here if children didn't eventually eat what was put in front of them :) Your attention and concern is admirable and congratulate yourself for feeding your children so well, even if at the moment it isn't up to your ideal.

I troll constantly for new ways of offering "good", ideally organic, well balanced delicious food. I also make my son come with me to the market and be part of the process. I know your children are young and it can be a pain with young ones but it helps, trust me. When we go now he gets to taste, choose and help plan meals and knows that he can't eat ice cream for dinner, etc. We also go to our local Farmers Market at least twice a month.

The fruit and veggie thing is still tricky. He must try whatever is put in front of him and if he doesn't like it he has a fall back choice that he must pick. Right now its spinach. Fruit is tricker because of seasonal choices. The point is you have to roll with it, research, subscribe to recipe sites, read magazines, etc. WholeFoods has great tips for kids, so does VegFamily, Epicurious, the Food Network, Martha Stewart, Michel Nischan, Jamie Oliver, Chowhhound, and loads of other folks. I wish I could say there is an "ah ha" moment or a magic trick that changes them into their former vegetable and fruit eating selves, but its really an ongoing adventure.

I vowed I would never be a short order cook in my family's house and that we would all eat the same lovingly prepared foodie meals that I envisioned, but thats just not reality.

Panforte, Fig Cake and the like; searching for yummy cheese accoutrements

I received all sorts of yummy cheeses, Manchego, Mahon, Cheddar with cranberry, dolce gorgonzola. So far I have served them with things like local honey and homemade candied walnuts, homemade sweet smoked almonds, membrillo (quince paste), but I am looking for other things such as fig cake, Panforte, guava paste (ideally fresh made), moustarda.

Any additional ideas?

What about crackers, walnut breads, etc?

Are there any local great tastes that just wowed you and where. I got the membrillo at Whole Foods. I've had an okay fig cake from TJs, I've purchased guava paste from Vallarta in the past, it was pretty sweet though. I prefer locally made items.

Thanks!

Candy boxes, etc needed...

American Vine in Hollywood. Its on Melrose just west of Cahuenga, east of Highland. (on the same block as Providence). They have loads of stuff. Its always a bit in disarray. Sift through and there are loads of good things to use. It's got most of the items Micheal's does just less organized, but I've always had good luck there with bakery boxes. cookie boxes, molds, etc.

All of the above are also good for these supplies as well. I purchased some great, not cheesy, cellophane with a red and white snowflake motif at the .99 cent store on La Brea and Willoughby.

I do love Michael's and I did venture to the Burbank store the first weekend in December and even then it was pretty picked over.

Who makes a great ice cream cake?

My soon to be 12 year old is requesting an ice cream cake for his big day.

I know only the typical commercial fare; Carvel, BR, Coldstone. I saw that TJ's made one at one time. I'd really prefer a locally make super ice cream cake, Fosselman's , Dr. Bob's, Milk on Beverly?

Ideas would be greatly appreciated. We are located in Hollywood. Thanks.

Dinner in Holllywood with Company Execs

I had an "industry" lunch yesterday at Campanile. I hadn't been there in years! It did not disappoint. Fresh, fabulous not froufrou food, catering to all tastes. And the service was attentive, not fussy, appropriate since we were engrossed in conversation.
