Pub 199 is great if you want to eat 24 clams and drink a pitcher of beer.

Italian Bread in Newark area.
Gina's & Nicolo's are both great for different reasons. Nicolo's is more of a classic italian bakery.
That being said, Nicolo's is going to be just about as out of the way as Gina's. Calandra's might be a better bet, but even that is sort of in the wrong direction.

Pizza - Bar Pies in Western Morris?
You will find a plethora of passable pizza joints and red sauce italian places, but nothing all that great. 'Good' pizza is easy to find, Transcendent pizza is difficult..
Reservoir Tavern is the best bet for a 'bar pie', Anna Marie's in Wharton is a pizzeria that has done alright by me lately..

DIVE BARS AND CHEAP GREAT FOOD
12th St. Ale House on 12th & 2nd.. Decent beers, excellent happy hour, goes till 8pm. They don't serve food, but you can eat at the bar or at tables in the back, making it a good base for EV delivery sampling.. Artichoke is around the corner...
your favorite dog friendly places to eat
Life Cafe has outdoor seating that is good for dogs.
Confused about New Jersey?
Yes, your analogy is correct in that in both situations the resources were not available to properly address the problem. The difference is there is now Ad Revenue and a parent company with deep pockets.
I wasn't trying to be a know-it-all when I stated my profession, just that I empathize with the staff who are probably frustrated that they cannot provide their users with a better experience.
Also, why is computer in quotes?
Confused about New Jersey?
Running a website is not nearly the intractable problem governance is.
I am an overworked computer professional, I sympathize greatly with the chowhound staff. I imagine the issues are 'The parent company is not giving us the resources to properly complete this project'. I do not fault the people working on chowhound, I fault their organization.
Anyway, unlike government there is no reason to settle for mediocrity when it comes to internet message boards.
Confused about New Jersey?
I don't know what you mean by 'longer term perspective'. I would submit that the chowhound messageboards are not significantly better than they were before the acquisition.
You and I will stick around because of the value we know the place has, My fear is a new user might say, 'Why am I reading about NJ I want to read about Albany' or 'I can't find things I search for' or 'Why is the mobile site a mess?' and then they will skedaddle to another site and we will lose their insight. For effect, I'm imagining this new user was the offspring of Julia Childs and David Chang. It frustrates me because it makes me sad!
I do not attribute this to malice, but to bad management.
In town next week, confused and overwhelmed with selectiing 3-4 places for Italian dinners?
Any insight into the reasoning behind those hours? Lamarca on 22nd & 3rd is the same way, only open M-F.
It seems their accountant might say, "You know, many people enjoy eating out on Saturday and brunch on Sunday."
Confused about New Jersey?
I agree. I had been using 'site:chowhound.com' on google since the old site, but now that doesn't work anymore. nice.
Confused about New Jersey?
Yeah, no, not acceptable. Do you work for CBS? The idea was that Mr. Leff sells his website to a big company. Mr. Leff then gets to focus on food while the big company makes the site run well. Mr. Leff has done some great food writing since then, but the message boards are not significantly better than they used to be. Some bells and whistles but fundamental problems (search, relevant board topics) are basically the same as they were before.
Chowhound is imbued with a sense of community that keeps people coming back, but it's these kinds of problems that drag on a site's growth and allow similar sites the opportunity to start snatching up your mindshare/community..
Confused about New Jersey?
Every day a solution is not reached this problem gets worse. Meanwhile, the organization of the boards remain scattershot and random.

Interstate-80 from East New Jersey to Columbia, NJ
Yeah, as a kid Lockwood was the standard post-cowboy destination. I just went there a week or two ago. It has a great atmosphere, but the pizza wasn't as good as I remembered it. Certainly a fun place for a pitcher and a pie. Can't remember the last time I went to Barrone's..
Closer to rt80, the Black Forest Inn, for slightly fancier german fare, is great. They also have a bar which tends to be more casual. This is the restaurant where I drank my first truly great beer.
The interesting new place in the area is Salt, just north of the Shoprite on 206S, where Old 76'ers used to be. They are modeling themselves after the spotted pig.. I haven't eaten a full meal yet, but I have stopped in for a beer and some snacks. They have a BOGO Happy Hour deal on bar snacks and $2 McSorley's all the time. So far all I've eaten there are a plate of olives, a side of fries and a mac&cheese app. All hit the spot, good enough to get me to try the rest of the interesting menu..
However, as a jrz 'gastro-pub' they really need to get Cricket Hill beer, preferably draught, at least in bottles. Definitely an oversight.

Oof, I wish I had seen your posts earlier... Ron's is no good. Josephs, just up the road on 46, is a better italian sitdown tavern type place. Carmine's, on main st in Netcong, is a respectable pizzeria.
Pizza Pub: An Abomination
My gf lives right near here, so I was hoping for good things. My experience wasn't as bad as gg's, but I probably won't be going back. The pizza itself is bland, but not completely awful Nothing special about the ingredients, tasted like it could've come from any mediocre NJ/LI pizza joint. A friend who reheated a slice later on said it tasted like a hot pocket. Probably not to far off with that assessment. Honestly, there are numerous terrible pizzerias in the area, so they should fit in well.
It's run by the same people as the place that formerly occupied the spot, Push Cafe. The guy who makes the pizzas is the only new addition, as far as I can tell. This might be their bigger problem, as it has inherited that place's gift for service. I sat merrily at the bar ordering shot+slice combos, while watching a parade of confused people. Where does one order takeout? Is there waitress service for the tables? Where do I pay?
It ended in a fun scene where customers were yelling suggestions to the receptive (to her credit) manager. Does that happen in other cities? I'm betting they are more likely to stew in silence elsewhere.
Anyway, seven bucks for a call shot and a slice. This doesn't come close to beating Artichoke, where nine bucks gets ya a bud & sicilian.

Thirded, also they have regular wing specials, a good beer selection and a nice outside area...

Burger recos please (NOT shake shack)
I have been a long time Paul's fan -- I have no problem with a burger that turns its bun into a gloppy mess. But I had a very mediocre burger from them a few weeks ago. It was probably somewhat overcooked for my liking, and the meat didn't have a good taste. Overcooked? Low quality meat? Not seasoned properly? I don't know. Anyway, they will get another chance or two because they have been great in the past.
Their fries don't do much for me. Steak fries like that always seem like pommes frites that didn't get their second cooking. I don't think they would qualify as super fresh / made to order. But then, I love those crispy shake shack fries so maybe my opinion shouldn't count.
ps. 12th St Ale house during happy hour is a great place to get a $3 call drink /beer and some delivery.
Confused about New Jersey?
You REALLY REALLY need to get on that. That a coding issue is preventing such a basic piece of site maintenance is ridiculous. I thought this was the kind of thing that was supposed to be cleared up once Jim wasn't running it in his basement.
It is having significant impact on the usability of the site. You should make it a very high priority.
Corn Dogs
The Nathan's across the street from MSG (32nd & 7th) has corn dogs. Notable because they are delicious when fresh and only 99 cents. Cheapest corn dog in the city?
Fox's U-Bet Chocolate Syrup
The Associated at Park & 22nd has it, so I'd guess they all do.
