Help me with basic Finger Lakes advice!

The Finger Lakes is difficult for good food. Knapp's Vinyard on the West side of Cayuga Lake has a pleasant restaurant for lunch or dinner. The food is OK, and the patio is really nice to sit on and eat/drink.

Moro's Table in Auburn is very good. They serve a lot of small plate dishes. There seems to be intelligent life in the kitchen.

I'm not a big fan of any of the places in Skaneateles. Maybe a burger in the bar at Sherwood Inn, but stay out of the dining room.

If you are passing through Syracuse and are looking for a good high-end meal, I really like Lemon Grass/Bistro Elephant in Armory Square. The two restaurants share the same kitchen. Lemon Grass is Pacific Rim type and Bistro Elephant is Bistro. Both very good. For more relaxed and less expensive dining in Syracuse, most people like Dinosaur BBQ. You may have to wait for a table (no reservations accepted), but it is a friendly bar to hang out in. Lots of motorcycle types, but absolutely safe.

If you get to Penn Yan, try to find a diner or someplace that serves grape pie.

The Finger Lakes is very pretty country. I'm not a big fan of the wines. I've tasted a few recently that were good $12 bottles, but unfortunately the price was more like $25.00. I like the California, France, Chile, even Ontario wines better for the price. Lots of people do enjoy the New York wines, I'm just not one of them. There are wine trails along most of the lakes, and there are lots of wineries along each of them. All easy driving on good roads with light traffic. Enjoy

Alone in Baltimore

I will be in Baltimore on business for a few nights. Staying near Camden Yards, but will have a car. I like to sit at the bar when I eat by myself. I'm looking for good food of any type and any price range. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, any suggestions for a good breakfast in the neighborhood? Thanks

Syracuse Picks and Pans

I'm not a fan of Delmonico's. They serve huge steaks, but quantity definitely exceeds the quality. I still think the steaks are consistently better at Price Chopper. Their primarily Italian fare looks better than it actually tastes.

Syracuse Picks and Pans

There is underground parking directly beneath the restaurant off of Jefferson Street. The price is $3.00 all night. Sorry you missed it. BTW: I just remembered 238 Bistro is now called Bistro Elephant. Same owner/chef, he just likes to change the name and tweek the setup every few years. Definitely the best in town, IMHO

Syracuse Picks and Pans

I always check Chowhound when traveling. I live in Syracuse and finally got around to checking out the posts for my hometown. I was appalled.by what I found. Obviously tastes will vary, and I don't claim any particular expertise, but I want to offer my own views on the local restaurant scene.

If you have ever tasted a fine steak, you probably don't want to order one in Syracuse. The exceptions are Lemon Grass / 238 Bistro and L'Adour. Otherwise you will find a better steak at the local Price Chopper supermarket (but not Wegmans).

If you want good Italian food, there are several places in the Utica / Rome area. Back in the day, there were several fine places in Syracuse, but they are long gone.

The food critic for the local newspaper is, IMHO, an idiot. She likes Olive Garden, for example.

First, my favorites:

Lemon Grass / 238 Bistro -- Consistently excellent food. Heavy on Pacific Rim style dishes, but also excellent for steaks, duck, etc. If you are only having one dinner in the area, this is the place to go.

L'Adour -- French. Very good for bistro dishes. Best cheese plate in town for dessert.

Dinosaur BBQ -- Not the greatest BBQ, but a very friendly and fun place. The pulled pork is still smoked daily in house. The ribs and some of the other meats are par-boiled and cryovac'd by the supplier, then finished with a few hours smoking. Edible, but not really right. It gets crowded for both lunch and dinner. Later in the evening (Maybe 9:00 or so) the music starts. The crowds actually thin out, so it is easier to get a table then. The bar is very lively and friendly.

China Road -- Best chinese in the area, FWIW

Black Olive -- Very friendly mostly Greek dishes.

New Century -- Good Vietnamese

Steak & Sundae -- Typical Greek Diner food. Decent for what it is.

Aunt Josie's -- Nothing special red sauce Italian

Now the places to stay away from:

Colemans

Kitty Hoynes

Riley's

Scotch & Sirloin

Saratoga Steaks

Casa Di Copani

BC

Pascal's

Arad Evans

Danzers

Stella's

Francesca's

Where to eat/what to do in Portland, ME

For a unique and excellent dining experience, try Hugo's. Rob Evans is an award winning chef, and his take on "molecular gastronomy" results in some truly memorable dishes. They do a 6 course tasting menu with wine pairings that is well worth the steep price. http://hugos.net/

I just realized Gilford is pretty close to where we are staying. Better choice than Fratello's?

One Night in Laconia

Actually planning on next week. So if my friends prefer big portions of "conventional" food, Fratello's is as good an option as any in Laconia? Thanks Lex

Which place would you not consider, Tavern 27 or Fratello's?

One Night in Laconia

Thanks Lex. It was your review that turned me on to Tavern 27 to start with. Some of my pals are sort of meat and potatos / red sauce Italian types, so I was thinking of Fratello's as a backup suggestion. Worth considering?

One Night in Laconia

Free for dinner with some friends on a Thursday evening. Tried "O" last year. It was ok, but I was not particularly impressed. I was thinking of trying either Tavern 27 or Fratella's. Anybody have any insights about these places, or suggestions for an alternative? Thanks

Restaurants/bars in Scranton

I would skip Cooper's. The atmosphere is fine and the service is friendly, but the seafood is nothing to write home about.

Ogonquit Arrows & MC Perkins Cove?

After several years my wife and I are returning to Ogonquit later this month. We liked MC Perkins Cove last time, and want to try Arrows this trip. Are they both still good, or has fame overtaken them? Any other must trys? Thanks.

Wheeling, WV ???!!!

Anyplace good to eat in Wheeling? So far I have only found listings for Hot Dogs, Beef & Fish Sandwiches. This is all OK, but I was hoping to find someplace where I can sit down with friends and have a good dinner. It doesn't have to be fancy, but I was hoping to find a decent family owned joint maybe a step up from basic diner. Thanks.

Alone in Clearwater Beach

I will be staying in Clearwater Beach for a few nights next month. When I travel alone, I enjoy places where I can sit at the bar and enjoy good food. I'm not embarrassed to dine alone, I just find it more pleasant to pass the time sitting at the bar, maybe striking up a conversation or even watching a game on the tube. Any food in any price range, so long as it's good. Your suggestions would be appreciated.

Old Erie Restaurant or Skaneateles update?

Old Erie has, unfortunately, gone downhill under the new ownership. My wife and I used to love the place, and we wanted to keep going, but two mediocre dinners in a row turned us off of the place.

Does The Finger Lakes area have ANY good restaurants?

Update: Old Erie Restaurant changed hands last year. It has gone downhill and is definitely not worth the trip. Too bad. It used to be a real treat.

Norfolk - Freemasons Abbey, Kincaid's or Where

Will be in the VA Beach Norfolk area for a week. My in-laws (who I don't necessarily trust on this issue) recommended Freemasons Abbey and Kincaids. We are looking for good food, expensive or not. Are these places OK, and where would you recommend. Also, any recs near ODU? Thanks.
