My Birthday tradition

I ask go to an expensive restaurant. Alas my adventurous spirit has lead me astray a few times. Brunch at the Four Seasons, Chez Neus, all disappointments. The last slam dunk was the Carillion.
Uchiko probably won't wow since you go often but it also won't disappoint. Enjoy!

Too many restaurants withholding ice!

They'll let you buy it by the bag.

Too many restaurants withholding ice!

I went to the UK a few years ago. I learned if you asked for water they'd offer still or sparking. If you asked for still it meant bottled water. Apparently people don't drink tap water? Anyway I have a cousin who buys ice from Sonic by the bag and uses it as her ice. My GF also loves their ice and went as far as buying an ice cone machine to make the right consistency.

So there are about a half dozen restaurants, some of the better ones in town, where they refuse to give you ice with your water. You'll get a decanter of chilled water but no ice.
I know this is common in Europe (I found it a little annoying there too) but this is America and specifically Texas. We like our water cold and there's a good chance it's hot outside.
I recently went to the Peached Tortilla and had to ask for ice. My waiter forgot so I went to the bar to get it myself.
Even if they just gave us ice in our glasses and left the warm bottle that would be fine. No ice at all just stinks.
Does this bother anyone else?

Where can i find these canned sardine brands in Austin?

Whole Foods or Central Market are your only hope, Specs to a lesser extent. But they will be more expensive than that.. Do you ever eat Wild Planet sardines? They are awesome.

Went back and had a peanut butter cookie with chocolate ganache. It was really good. The place is straight winning.

I have to disagree with Razzoos. Everything is fried in the same coating/seasoning. You can't tell the oysters rom the shrimp. If going cajun go to French Quarter Grill. I can't vouch for the Round Rock location but the one in North Austin is pretty damn good and not far away. Check the hours before going though and the place is small so reservation help.

Saturday Breakfast

In this town about $20.. But likely I think OP was thinking menu vs. buffet.

Saturday Breakfast

By fancy you mean expensive I take it. Trio at the Four Seasons will fit the bill. The food is good if you order off the menu. (NEVER go to the brunch buffet it's a rip off).

Or you could do the Cafe at the Driskill.

For less expensive East Side Cafe is good as is 24 Diner.

For a Mexican breakfast in Round Rock they might like Juarez Bakery. Lots of Mexican pastries there.

Best eats near Downtown

Not sure. LA BBQ is a trailer with outdoor seating. Availability varies. Stiles Switch could easily accommodate you as would Black's BBQ near UT campus (Not Terry Black's I haven't been there).
I'll let someone else chime in on Mexican or Tex-Mex but I do love Amaya's.

How about cost? You can go fancy pre fixe. With kids I'd go to Jack Allen's in Round Rock for dinner. Maybe 24 diner for breakfast or being in round Rock Monument Cafe is a good place.

The Best Barbecue in Austin, Texas - Bon Appétit

It was raining cats and dogs. I don't know where he's located but business could have been lousy. It being SXSW he should have moved. I think Chilantro made about a million bucks this week. Everywhere I went I saw people eating kimchi fries.

Restauranting during SXSW

If you just want to cross it off the list feel free but for me it's not worth it at this point. As a road trip I'd try to roll it all into a trip to the San Marcos outlets. Maybe hit the outlets on the way back?: That' how I did it when I last took out of towers there. Others may disagree but there isn't anything to do in Lockhart but heat BBQ.To try all three places, (only Lockhart locals think Chisolm Trail is good) get a thin slice of fatty brisket from all places along with a single pork rib and a sausage. Just an fyi If you go and don't want to eat off butcher paper I'd recommend you bring your own paper plates. Also if you feel BBQ needs a thick sugary sauce then you'll need to bring your own.

I can't trust your opinion if you think Black's sucks. Of the Lockhart places I prefer Smitty's but those places are fine and if we didn't have good bbq in town I'd recommend them. Hell I use to drive to Taylor for the Mueller's beef ribs but it's no longer necessary.

They do not have to go that far for BBQ. Stiles Switch, LA BBQ hell even the Lockhart place near campus are all great to fine. A drive to Lockhart is now totally unnecessary.

Mutton BBQ. Where?

To my knowledge Sam's is the only place in Austin.

Best eats near Downtown

La BBQ is the best BBQ but you will wait an hour but likely not more. It's the best compromise for people who want good BBQ but don't have 5 hours to wait in the sun. Get there at 11 a.m. and you are golden.

People speak highly of Freeman's but it's the most expensive BBQ in town. I've only had dessert there and wasn't impressed.
I honestly think the best non wait in line BBQ in the downtown overall area, (not really downtown) is Black's BBQ near UT. Good product, no bark but good smoke.
It won't get much play here but the Driskill Hotel has a great bar that has really good food.
I think the service is shit and the employees very rude but Casino El Camino had the best chili cheese fries I've ever had. Be warned it's a hole in the wall and you'll feel like you might catch something when you sit down.
It's not downtown but Odd Duck is good food, small plates but very good. Next door is Luke's Inside Out and it's my favorite food truck. Best chicken sandwich I've ever had. Also it's worth noting that we have a restaurant chain here now called Gordough's. They make stuffed donuts and they also serve various sandwiches on fried bread, think non sweet donuts. Very good and very unique experience.
Last thing the place isn't popular here but I actually like Lambert's but not for the bbq. Food is good and the happy hour is KILLER.

You should have gone to Stiles Switch. La BBQ often has bbq that late but not always. I think the Lockhart's BBQ near campus is better than Green Mesquite.

Man bites dog

The place was lousy. We went there and the corn dog we got was frozen inside. Instead of making a new one if recall they either nuked or deep fried the half eaten one (I can't recall which). It was not good and we never went back

Downtown to eat Cedar Park to actually get food to cook/live on. Mueller if you want to be run over by marauding dogs.

Not nearly as fancy or expensive as other places you are considering but every time I go to the French Quarter Grill I wonder why I don't go more often. The food is very good and their desserts are solid.

You are probably talking about Mrs. P, which other ones were closed? The good ones are always open but you have to take into account with bad weather these guys are losing their shirts, plus it's damn cold. The Odd Duck guy talked about how bad business would be when it rained, etc. I do feel your pain though.
