Curly's Carolina Brick and Mortar in Round Rock

I kinda wish these places would let their fans know they are in trouble before closing. People might make more of an effort to come out. There are alot of good places to eat in Austin. Sometimes I don't make it back around to a place quickly without a concrete reason.

Curly's Carolina Brick and Mortar in Round Rock

Per their facebook page they are closing this Sunday. No details given as to why. It's a shame but restaurants are a ton of work. Only got there the one time but definitely would have been back.

Zagat's Top 10 Austin Burgers

Go to Flemmings at the Domain and eat the bar burger awesome. Although it likely qualifies as gourmet.

IMO it stinks. All the action is at Lakeline or downtown.

Favorite meats at classic BBQ places?

It is/was labor day weekend. I imagine a lot of people were buying for parties and bbqs.. Extra busy around Christmas too. Regarding temperature it is a trailer, there is no indoor seating. I take my que and run to ac. It keeps pretty well.

Shakes from Fry's Electronics

Only non-food place I've been that has good food is Nordstrom's. The restaurant is legit.

Favorite meats at classic BBQ places?

Louie Mueller is in Taylor and kinda begot the whole Austin BBQ revolution.
John's part of the family, had a restaurant that Franklin worked at. Franklin started his own truck/pit after it closed. I believe the current La BBQ guy worked for both Franklin and later for John after he started up again. Stiles Switch pit guy used to work in Taylor too.
Here's a more detailed account:
http://www.texasmonthly.com/story/mea...

I think on some level it has to ruffle the original Taylor crew that other people are getting acclaim for their style. But I remember when I used to visit them that they had no interest in expansion to Austin. I imagine now they realize how much money they were leaving on the table.

I think they are worth trying. I think they are some of the best. I've never had a dry beef rib at Louie. John's were a bit dry the last time I had it.

Have you had the ribs at Louie Mueller, Franklin's or La BBQ? If you haven't then you may not have had the best.

Favorite meats at classic BBQ places?

The last report I read was that the line was at max an hour. That's the longest I ever spent in line and that was during the lunch rush. I did the BBQ tour thing and honestly I believe there is no reason to go anywhere but La BBQ now.

Favorite meats at classic BBQ places?

Mueller's beef rib
Southside brisket and sausage
Smitt's pork ribs and sausage. Also prime rib
Kruez, nothing lesser of the three good Lockhart places
City Market, had horrible bbq that was like shoe leather. We couldn't finish our brisket and I have no idea why people love the place.
Cooper's, Prime rib, brisket and Rib eye steaks on the weekend. Their sides are also pretty good.

Honestly you can skip all those places and just go to La BBQ. I guarantee you it w none of them are better than LA BBQ. I don't think La BBQ does prime rib or have a wide range of sausage but what they do have is excellent. Save your time and spend it eating mexican or other food.

Zagat's Top 10 Austin Burgers

Never had a bad mighty fine experience. Never had cold fries, they seem mostly made to order. I'm sure they would have replaced them if you complained. Oh and their shakes are amazing. Austin Land & Cattle's bar burger should be on this list. Although a chain I dare anyone to find a better deal than Flemming's bar burger with fries.. Awesome. I like P Terry's too but I can't compare it to a restaurant burger. It's just a superior fast food burger.

Huts is over cooked garbage. They do way too much volume and show no care. Last time I went I got a hokey puck.

Hard Hat XI

Also went to Punch Bowl Social's opening party last night. It appears they actually prepared the food served. The wings were decent and their deserts were pretty good, cupcakes and cheesecake. If you go for drinks I recommend the backyard burbon. Place has bowling, darts, shuffleboard and some retro games. I'm sure it will be very popular. It's at the domain next to Gloria's.

Is anyone indulging in Hatch Chiles?

I've made mac and cheese, chili and tacos. I've been adding it into everything I cook.

Eats near Driskill Hotel

I went to the hotel for the Film Festival conference. Had a nice conversation with Elvis Mitchell in the Austin hotel bar after eating a really good burger. I don't like the place but I feel I should mention it since it ends up on all those travel shows. Casino El Camino is a total dive bar not far from the hotel. I don't think the burgers are worth the trip but the chili cheese fries are very good. Expect bad service and a surly attitude. If that's worth it to you then to say you went I say go.

The hotel bar has really good food as does the other fancy hotel nearby. It's the Stephen Austin hotel I think. You are also a brisk walk to Max's Wine Dive, Gus's fried chicken.

Like I said the brisket was this close to being dry. But with the sauce it was saved. If you go back I definitely recommend a sandwich. Their bread was excellent.

Red Star Southern

Haven't seen a post about this place. Went recently with the GF. We both really enjoyed the food.
I'm not going to lie $8 for a leg and thigh is a little steep but the leg was abnormally large. The fried chicken had a good crisp crust and a deep spicy flavor.
In comparison to Gus's which I found was so Tobasco heavy it became bitter and tasted burnt. The last few times I went to Lucy's I was beyond disappointed and won't return.

The meal was a two piece and two shared side dishes, hush puppies and mac and cheese with a dab of coleslaw. The slaw was excellent sweet with very good flavor, some of the best I've had. Hush puppies were also good, not too oniony. The mac and cheese was a disappointment. It's obvious the chef, who is a sweetheart, is making it in the trailer. IMO good mac and cheese needs to be baked, otherwise you just have wet noodles. I'd recommend taking it home and putting it in the oven.
Regarding the service it appeared to be a one woman operation when we went so I don't know how it works when it's busy. I don't have high expectations for trailers but based on my experience I'd recommend some patience and empathy to get you through without anger.

It was hot as the sun when we went so ate inside the Grackle. It was cool but smelled like smoke. It's not an optimal dining experience.
All and all I'd totally go back and I can highly recommend the chicken.

Guide To Ice Cream Shops In Austin Texas

Dolce Neve is pretty good. Get the lemon shortbread ice cream sandwich. It's very similar to Lick but the ice cream sandwich options are a nice change.

At first thought. I thought it was hot water cornbread. Basically pan fried cornbread my mom used to make. God I loved that stuff.

Southside Market Lamb Ribs

I've been many times and I don't recall any restrictions menu wise. They run a proper restaurant with no frills. Never had an issue getting a table. I'm sure I've had the mutton there but don't recall. HOnestly ribs are not great there. They make solid sausage and brisket although if you are used to top Austin places you'll be disappointed. Kinda sad, before Austin got all this killer BBQ this was a good option for North Austin people. Now it's just a distant also-ran. Plus I've been a little more hesitant to buy their stuff since the listeria outbreak but to be fair that was on the wholesale level not at the restaurant.
