Franklin Barbecue

It appears you are from out of town. The locals know its not worth it. There are places in town as good with shorter lines and no 3 month ahead pre order.

Big Bend Area- Terlingua, Marfa... best food on the cheap.

I saw a travel show where they camped out in Marfa. Apparently the guy who owns Lambert's in Austin has a sister who runs some kind of camp ground. He came up with the menu and it actually looked pretty good. I've never been and can't vouch for it but I think some googling could figure that out.
Also Franklin's isn't a place you can casually stop by at for food. It's a four hour wait with no guarantee of food. For a one day stop you'd be better off planning to go to La BBQ. The wait time is only two hours right now, less if you show up before they open. If you email ahead 3 days in advance you can skip the line and get food. No real difference between take out and sit down other than you having to unwrap your food in butcher paper.
I think the BBQ is okay if you live out in that direction but I wouldn't bother making a special trip out to Elgin. To me the BBQ in Luliing is horrible so it can be skipped all together. We couldn't even finish what we got it was that bad. It's purely a Shellbyville/Springfield thing that gives that down it's rep.

Lockhart IMO isn't really worth the trip now. Austin has a local outpost of Black's that literally trucks the food from Lockhart to Austin for you. Smitty's is good but if on a time crunch I think Lockhart can be skipped.

Help Please: need berkshire or other locally sourced baby back ribs?

Nothing is frozen solid at the Farmer's market for long. The meat I buy there is very cold but not frozen solid.

Head to the Farmer's market. Lakeline or Mueller's. Meat options abound. You may want to call the vendors ahead to see what they have so you can bring them.

I love bean and cheese tacos

That's a dangerous corner. Kimchi brussel sprouts at Republic, chocolate chip cookies from Epicere and now tacos.

I can't imagine how they ever close. The place is always packed to the gills. The one off Parmer has people parking on the grass.

Dinner Sunday in Austin??

I can only speak for Lambert's Happy Hour but I really enjoyed it. The place gets no love here though. Fixe was pretty good, see my recent write up, but I wasn't IN LOVE with the place.

Houston Friend coming to town this weekend to visit

If you do Stiles go early as opposed to later. Chances are the BBQ will be less dry.

As a former LA Bbq booster that wait is pretty serious now. Two hours if you get there when they open. I'd email ahead three days and make an order for pick up. They'll still cut it fresh.

Dinner Sunday in Austin??

Odd duck is mostly small plates. Not sure how that would go over with kids. Plus cost mag be an issue. Luke's inside out at the Gibson is tasty though

Gino's East Soft Opening 1/2 price all food Sat and Sunday (today) ONLY

Thanks for the heads up. I went for lunch to take advantage of the sale. The pizza was good. I was expecting a greasy hunk of cheese but the pizza we had was tomato centric, which I thought was a good thing.
Overall I enjoyed it but I don't know if it's worth going to the heart of 6th street for, (it literally connected to Bikinis). Going by memory I think Uno's is better but to be fair it's been a while.

I should also add that BJ's has a deep dish pizza and I"m not sure if this pizza is better than theirs either, I haven't been to BJ's in a while.

Man Bites Dog

Brick and mortar or a truck? I can't imagine the rent is cheaper there then it was in their old location.

Qui to launch a $150 pp sushi restaurant in Austin

As at the chef’s counter at Qui, Otoko will use a ticketing system, with dinner running about $150 per person. That may not compare to the cost of Masa, in New York, or Jiro, in Tokyo, but it’s certainly more expensive than anyplace else in Austin. The price point will allow the chef and his crew to work with decidedly higher-end ingredients, which, as Qui points out, are not solely about cost but about cultivating the right relationships with sourcers. To do so, Qui has been making trips to Tokyo’s Tsukiji fish market to meet his actual buyer on the docks. “Mr. Yamamoto gets to work at midnight, Japan time,” he says. “So every morning in Austin, my guy will call to ask what he’s got for us.”

Fixe Austin's Southern House

I went to fixe and I have pictures.
We went there this weekend and overall I was pleased with the food and would return.
We started with the biscuits which were divine. They were light fluffy inside and crisp on the outside. Served piping hot. The jam wasn't sweet but it had a great flavor and they were served with the smoked sausage pate. This was the highlight of the meal for both of us.

For dinner we had the fried chicken and the rib eye special, we shared. I was really high on the chicken by my dinner companion wasn't. It lacked the spice she was looking for. They cold smoke the chicken and I really enjoyed the combination of smoked fried chicken.
The steak was solid and very good, it was served with charred green beans.

The only disappointment for me was dessert. We tried the Meyer lemon cake and it was tart to the point of being off putting. The waiter, who was awesome, noticed our disappointment and swapped it out with a cheesecake dish which we liked more. Overall though they don't seem to like sweetness in their desserts and I would skip this course in the future.

With one cocktail the bill was about $100. If we hadn't opted for the steak or the drink the meal would have been $60 which I think is a good value for the quality provided.

Fun birthday breakfast for kids

Twisted Root burgers has mini golf? I haven't eaten there yet soI have no idea how good the food is.
Also I know some folks on here took their daughters to high tea for their birthday, Alice i Wonderland style.

Chilantro is underrated

I've begun eating a lot of kimchi and even if it isn't fermented for nine months or whatever it tastes very good. As long as it tastes good what do I care? I'm not surprised they don't ferment it for long, they use it in everything.

I've had the rice bowl twice and the rice balls twice as well. Always enjoyed them. I haven't tried the tacos yet.

Does Odd Duck lunch menu still include their Beef tongue reuben sandwich?

Telling you today what's on the menu wouldn't matter. They change it at will. It could be gone tomorrow.
