What to do with a whole bunch of limes

Make Dorie Greenspan's Lemon Cream Tart with limes instead of lemons?

Sweet Tofu Dessert of Chinese origin?

I'm not one to recommend Lucky 3, but they have this dish on the dessert table by the lunch buffet. It's not the best I've had, but it's certainly good!

What's At Your Farmers Market This Spring? What Are You Making And Eating?

Hey monavano, I'm in the same area as you! I stopped by the Arlington farmer's market this past week, but didn't see anything exciting. Maybe I got there too late... There was definitely no asparagus to be found anywhere! I'm new(ish) to the NoVA-DC area and would love to know which farmer's markets you consider to be the best over here!

Inspire Me: What are your cooking plans for this weekend?

I was starting to wonder if the rain/humidity would be a problem. This might have to become a project for some other weekend =(

I'm desperate... need your help! =(

If you're making brownies from scratch, make sure you're using all purpose flour and not self-rising. My best friend can never remember which jar is which and has made that mistake several times.

Why flour before breading food?

It gives the egg something to cling to. Otherwise, your breading is more likely to just slide off. I'd keep it in the recipe for baked chicken fingers.

Nationals Park - The Food!!

I heard somewhere that sushi and other more ethnic foods would be moving in after the pope's visit. I think the move-in is also staggered over a couple weeks.

what to do with leftover rice?

Fried rice, stuffed peppers, rice stuffing for cornish hens or roast chicken?

Most disgusting taste (of normal foodstuffs)

Ditto on the cilantro. I think it tastes like soap. and I have always said that cumin smells like BO. I am SO glad i'm not the only one!

On another note, I won't eat ground meat. I can't get past the texture.

Butterfield 9 bar?

I was there on a Saturday night, so I can't comment on crowdedness during happy hour, but the bar was REALLY empty that night. A few people came and went as they were waiting to be seated, but that was it. It's a separate space from the dining room, and I think it was kind of small and felt cramped, but it's been a while, so I can't remember exactly.

Seeking recs for progressive dinner downtown

I've been completely consumed by my job for the past 2 weeks, and my boyfriend has been very understanding through it all. That being said, tomorrow night, I want to take him out for an evening of food, fun, and relaxation.

We really enjoy going to a series of restaurants and getting drinks and appetizers at the bar. I'll be meeting him at his office near Metro Center, and our first stop will be Ceiba. I'm hoping to end the evening at Mio (our favorite), but I'd like to have one more restaurant stop between Ceiba and Mio. Does anyone have suggestions for nicer places with great appetizers that aren't extremely loud or crowded?

Thanks in advance!

Best Shad Roe Recipes

The season typically starts in March, but it started early this year and shad roe has been available for about 3 weeks already. I think it usually ends sometime in April, so snatch some up while you can!

Best Shad Roe Recipes

I agree. Simpler is better in this case. I like to pan fry it with bacon in a little bit of butter (plus S&P obviously) and crunch up the bacon over the top when done.

Fried Mac and cheese

I thought it was pretty common now. Didn't TGI Friday's or a similar restaurant have it on their menu as an appetizer a couple years ago?

Your reaction reminds me of my own upon seeing Fried Oreos in New Jersey.

Unusual drink combos that work for you?

We drank that concoction at frat parties in college... They called it "hop, skip, and go naked".

Shad Roe in NoVa?

I thought it was more expensive than usual as well! I understand that it's more expensive to ship food around these days with gas prices soaring and all, but shad roe is local, so I don't see the reason for the price increase. I have to admit that I still bought some. A few extra bucks for a yummy, limited time dinner? DEFinitely worth it!

New DVR- What cooking shows do you record for future viewing?

I really miss the original Iron Chef. Does anyone know if those ever come on tv anymore?

Shad Roe in NoVa?

That's around the price I'm seeing as well. I think Eastern Market had some for 10.95/sac or something.

White Lily flour mill to close

I'm pretty sure that the Knoxville plant is closing down, but White Lily flour will still be produced. Smucker's just bought the brand in 2006 for $80ish million. I find it hard to believe they'd buy the brand only to shut it down. White Lily products will probably just be produced in another plant owned by Smucker's for cost cutting and profitability purposes.

Mini Baking Chips [Moved from Home Cooking board]

www.lepicerie.com has the mini white chips in the "hard to find" category under "bakers pantry". It takes a few minutes to sift through the pages, but it's in there. Sorry I can't help you with the mini peanut butter chips.

Dim Sum

You're thinking of China Garden in the 1100 Wilson Blvd high rise. Best dim sum I've had in NoVA so far.

Weird or Secret Ingredients?

Speaking of toffee, I found a bacon toffee recipe last night if you're gutsy enough to attempt bacon candy! I haven't tried it yet, so I can't vouch for the taste though.

The Deen Boys

I like them too! Their accent reminds me of home, and I LOVE the way they interact with Paula. I moved to DC recently and it bothers me that I very rarely hear "sir" or "ma'am" around here.

Shad roe in NOVA or DC?

I hear that shad roe is making an early appearance this year. Does anyone know of a market that sells this delicious, seasonal treat in Northern Virginia? I'll venture into DC for it if need be, but I would prefer not to. Thanks!

Leaving the coffee maker on...

Thanks for the quick replies, Leslie! I got the coffee maker as a Valentine's day gift from my boyfriend who just called to tell me that the model he got has an automatic shut off 2 hours after brewing. Perfect for a spaz such as myself! whew!

Leaving the coffee maker on...

I accidentally left my coffee maker on this morning and won't be able to make it back home for about 4.5 hours. Will it be ok or will I return to a burning house?

using gyoza wrapper for lasagna noodles?

I actually tried this a couple months ago... loving my pasta layers thin but being too lazy to roll it out. Anyways, it didn't work out very well. I boiled the wrappers prior to layering, and they ended up being way too mushy. If you decide to go forward with the idea, I would layer with raw wrappers.
