Sourdough Starter

i think it took me 9 days to grow my starter. i'd wait before making any decisions.

Kitchenaid Mixer Attachments: Are they good substitutes for real thing?

i don't commercial volumes of meat grinding. but for what i do use it for....grinding up leftover corned beef and potatoes for hash, grinding meat for burgers or sausage.....the KA attachment works just fine.

oh i hope i didn't make it sound like a problem at all. i was just wondering about the voracious appetites of teenage boys. he's a fruit bat for sure. the funny thing is, fruit was about all i could keep down while i was pregnant.

thanks. sounds like my little guy is headed in that direction. my kid eats an entire melon in one sitting. he has very healthy digestion!

how much do your kids eat? how old are they?

my almost 6 year old son eats a lot. has since the daycare infant room. he'd get his grain bar and melon first and then they'd go around the table to the other kids until they got back to him. and he'd be ready for round 2. on occasion he eats more than me (and i have a big appetite). He typically has 2 breakfasts (one at home and one at school). and then his school lunch. and then after school snack which yesterday was 2 bowls of cereal with the husband (that would not have happened on my watch! LOL). then dinner was a bowl of pasta fagiole. he's thin as a rail, of course. and his diet, while not overly adventurous is not picky. we don't order off the children's menu too frequently. i try and keep it pretty healthy. no juice, no soda, whole foods as much as i can control. i don't know why i'm mentioning all this......

anyway, i'm wondering if i should be saving up for the teenage years when his and his friends' appetites are really remarkable.

it does make things more flavorful imho. and you can't make 6 minute risotto in a crock. or sous vide (at least i think you can't).

salad spinner. i'd chuck it. twice a year the hubs uses it.
silicon baking mats when on the list and in the bin years ago. way prefer the results with parchment paper.
i've never used my potato rice or my zoodler thingy. i've used my tortilla press once to make dumpling skins for potstickers. and my foley foodmill has been used once. my springform pan is still shrink wrapped and has been for YEARS. haven't used my terrine in a dog's age. i still want a tureen, though. i'll probably never use it.

these are in the tippy top cabinets rather than the bottom drawer, though.

Easter brunch buffet

philips? my 5 year old loves it. it's your standard steam table, omelets to order, waffle, carving station, dessert station buffet. it's nothing special, but it's nice enough. it's reasonable and kid friendly.

i'm sure people will have MUCH better suggestions....

Thank you all. we ended up going to legal harborside first floor for dinner. which we made mostly out of apps. it was really nice. good service, good food, reasonable price, beautiful view. i like it there. i know some don't. but i've never had an off experience there.

then we went to del friscos for a perfectly nice drink. weird bar scene at least that night. sat next to a woman who gave her engagement ring back to her fiance right in front of us, and then she asked us to go to Umbria Prime with her. which we did not do.

then one more drink at remy's. which my friend called the "kid bar." we brought the average age up in there considerably.

this is comes together very quickly. the dough is very wet and almost difficult to work with. i could never roll it out. but the scones are very very moist with a crispyish exterior. i have to pat it into an 8 inch circle, cut into triangles and separate.

basic recipe

2 cups flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 T baking powder
salt
1 stick cold butter cut into cubes
1 egg lightly beaten
1 t vanilla
2/3 C dairy (i use 1/2 and 1/2)

cut the butter into the dry ingredients. add egg, vanilla, and dairy.

i usually add a pinch of cinnamon and some lemon zest to the dry ingredients. and then i add a C of blueberries after i add the wet ingredients..... and i sprinkle some sugar on top.

bake at 400 for 20 minutes.

my scone recipe is one that produces what we affectionately call "scuffins." a hybrid between a scone and a muffin. it takes no time start to finish, if you're interested, I'll find the recipe.

my kitchen was literally rotting out. we saved and saved and just redid it a year ago. saved on ikea cabinets and splurged on the stove and hood. extra oven is ikea that we got at 20% off during the kitchen sale.

i hope i didn't so too jerky.
