par-frying potatoes!

How far in advance can I do this? If I par-fry them, will they still turn brown over-time? I have dinner guests on Sunday evening, and will be serving steak frites. Today is Friday and I will be out-of-town on Saturday until Sunday afternoon. I'm wondering if I will be able to peel, cut and par-fry the potatoes to avoid doing it on Sunday. Should I refrigerate of freeze them?

Edit: I have no idea how/why I posted this to the Quebec board! I need it moved to Home Cooking but don't know how to do it.

Coconut macaroons. I need your best recipe!

Is angel flake coconut a brand or a type of coconut? I'm a sucker for the sweetened condensed milk flavour in coconut macaroons but I'd be willing to try that recipe in a pinch! It does look easy!

Coconut macaroons. I need your best recipe!

I am eating one now, and now that you mention it, I can feel the slight grittiness of the flour in my mouth. I am going to try it without flour next time, thanks for the tip! I have almost finished these single-handedly. I'll give myself until Monday to stop. Or Tuesday, Monday is a holiday here :)

Coconut macaroons. I need your best recipe!

Ok so I finally made them using this recipe which is a combination of a couple you posted here and ones I found online.
Coconut Macaroons with Salted Chocolate Drizzle
3 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
5-5.5 cups flaked coconut (I used unsweetened)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon almond extract

Directions

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line cookie sheets with parchment paper or aluminium foil. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, coconut and salt. Stir the vanilla and almond extracts into the can of sweetened condensed milk, Then combine with the coconut mixture with hands until well blended. I used the two spoon method to form a 3 sided egg shape then placed onto prepared cookie sheets. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes in the preheated oven, until coconut is toasted. I drizzled with salted chocolate sauce (salted butter melted into dark chocolate).

The sweetened condensed milk flavour really helped me to achieve the flavour I was craving. Thank you guys for all of your help!

Wow, so many good suggestions. I'm going to have to try all of these, from the sweetened condensed milk version to the egg white version and even the difficult but well worth it version! Do you guys pipe it out to give it that nice shape?

Coconut macaroons. I need your best recipe!

I have been obsessed with store-bought coconut macaroons for the last little while. I've never made them myself and would like to try. Any recipes?

RAMADAN- What are you eating as your pre-dawn meal? (suhur/s7ur)

Yeah, the last few days I have been waking up just to drink some water. Can't believe it is almost over!

Ramadan is almost over, that almost flew by! I used your tip about not eating a banana because of the sugar crash. Thanks :D

Things you shouldn't laugh at till you've tried...

Not sure, I'm usually finished my cup pretty quickly when those peanuts are in there. I can't help taking sip after sip! I wouldn't recommend having the peanuts sit in there for too long thouh, they may absorb too much liquid and get soft.

Pepsi and peanuts. Dump a handful of peanuts into a glass of pepsi (or coke, whatever) and slurp them up one by one with each sip. Bonus if the peanuts are salted :) Does anybody else do this?

HUGE can of San Marzano tomatoes PAST expiry date!!! AHHH! [moved from Home Cooking]

;) Glad you liked that... Thanks LW for the tip... It would have been too funny to see peoples' reactions if I let them roast for a day or two!

If you could eat any food/meal and it have no effect on your health, what would it be.

Nutella, croissants, ramen noodles, lobster with butter and a chocolate milk shake... ideally all in one sitting.

HUGE can of San Marzano tomatoes PAST expiry date!!! AHHH! [moved from Home Cooking]

I finally opened the can. It was a disaster. The can sprayed all over my ceiling, walls, children and white furniture and to all of you who told me to open it, I will never forgive you. Ok just joking, it was FINE! I am going mostly by smell because I'm fasting for Ramadan and can't really taste it, but it is perfect. Thank you guys for your help! Off to make soup! Now to find a recipe...

RAMADAN- What are you eating as your pre-dawn meal? (suhur/s7ur)

I have to really be careful not to overdo it when I break my fast. Our meals usually include all of the 'no-nos' you mentioned, and I never thought anything of it, but maybe I'll keep the meals lighter. It makes sense too, because I'm usually full after the soup or salad I start with; I just need to follow my body's signals and eat light instead of forcing myself to make up for what I've missed. Great suggestions. It is hard at first, but after a week or so you get used it. It always makes me realize how much time I spend thinking about/preparing for/eating food!!! I have so much more free time! ha!

Interesting about the black beans. I need to find a way to get them down at 4 am, what do you season with? Just salt and pep? And the watermelon idea makes so much sense, but I've never thought of it! I have lots :D I love Arabic style breakfasts used to make them for suhur before I had kids, but I find it generates so much dishes/noise when I'm tidying up, and I'm trying so hard not to wake up my 1 and 3 year old that early! But, good suggestion nonetheless!

Excellent suggestions. Thanks for all the details, love it! I don't think I can do canned sardines/avocado that early in the morning, but I'm looking forward to trying that combination once I'm able to have lunch again! Yes and water is SO important. I weaned myself off of caffeine a few weeks before Ramadan to avoid the headaches, and now decaf does the trick.

RAMADAN- What are you eating as your pre-dawn meal? (suhur/s7ur)

Ramadan starts today, which means abstaining from food and drink (yes, even water) from sunrise to sunset for a month. Where I live, that lasts from 4:20am-8:50pm on this particular day.

We usually wake up before dawn for a meal, and my usual is yogurt/granola/dates, decaf Nescafe with milk, and a banana. What are you eating? Even if you don't fast, could you suggest something more filling?

The huge can was on sale for like 3.97 or something and I convinced myself that I would be able to make something out of it all. I just became a too intimidated to conquer the entire can! But I will probably open, and freeze portions like somebody mentioned.

Really good to know! Thanks for letting me know, I will try them. I still haven't opened the huge can yet; both kids had the flu and now I do too. Really craving some soup, tomato soup?

What is the name for this non-Italian pasta dish?

I think you are looking for "shish barak". Mom makes makes it but in a round shape not a triangle. Love that stuff!

Why do you continue shopping at CostCo? I am underwhelmed. What do you appreciate about the warehouse store?

I have a feeling that sort of thing would go over very well among my friends, seriously!

HillJ- I think I'm on the same page as you. My previous response was to MGZ who insinuated that those who enjoy shopping at costco have a settled mind-set to defend it, and I was just explaining that some people "defend" costco because it actually works for them, but of course not for all people.
