Annapolis dinner for a group

Hi, Hounds!

I'm hoping to organize a pre-wedding welcome dinner for 12 people. The venue shouldn't be too loud, since grandparents will be with us, and be easily accessible by the downtown trolley or have parking.

Ideally, we'd love to go somewhere that's not an Irish bar/pub and will welcome any other cuisine suggestions.

Thanks!

Lunch in Greensboro, NC

It's definitely too late for your lunch, smessen, but I would recommend Sticks and Stones. The food is unfussy and local, the pizza delicious and thin-crusted, and the beer hails from North Carolina. They could definitely accommodate a bigger party. It may have been more casual than you were hoping for your lunch, but I think they deserve to be mentioned in the list of non-chain restaurants with good, locally focused menus.

Lunch spots in Henderson/Warrenton, NC?

Hi, Hounds!

My fiancee and I are having our parents meet and we need a place in Warrenton or Henderson, NC for them to have lunch and get to know each other. Cuisine is not important, so long as the food is good and not a product of a chain restaurant.

Specifically, does anyone know something about George's Blue Skies Restaurant? I can't find a menu, but the reviews of the place seem good.

Thanks!

Mexican in Columbus/Dublin?

Maybe I ordered wrong, but I was underwhelmed by the food at El Arepazo. I had the Bandeja Paisa and the fiancee had a spicy ceviche (that was definitely not spicy) and we both felt that the food lacked seasoning. Even my arepa was a bit flavorless. Do you have specific dishes that you recommend instead? Should we not have ordered Colombian?

I second Lauren in OH, there are some great taco trucks. I'm partial to Taco Nazo, especially since you can order ahead and pick up.

North Carolina pie recommendations

Thanks for the coffee shop details and the Weaver Street Market recommendation. I don't think I would have thought of/found Weaver Street without help.

North Carolina pie recommendations

Thanks for this recommendation! Would you happen to know which coffee shops carry their pies? The internet didn't seem to want to help me answer that question.

North Carolina pie recommendations

Thanks for the tip on Foster's and Gugelhupf! Do you have any specific farmer's market bakers you prefer? I'm happy to make a trip down to NC to try them all, but some guidance would certainly be appreciated.

North Carolina pie recommendations

Hi, Hounds,

I'm planning a wedding in the Warrenton area and would like to forgo dry fondant-covered cake in favor of delicious wedding pie. Not being a North Carolina native, I need to know: who makes the best pie within an hour or so of Warrenton? We're open to an assortment of pies: fruit, cream, nut, etc. Just let us know who does what best.

Thanks!

Best CHEAP hidden gems in Columbus, OH?

rorican4040 - have you been to Costelo's recently? I tried going tonight (Friday at 7:30), but found the restaurant empty and a closed sign in the window. Is this place gone, or relocating? I'm Puerto Rican and would love to have some mofongo.

Dim Sum in Columbus, OH

I second tuba_king2341 - has anyone been to Lee Garden lately to see if the dim sum is still delicious? The girlfriend and I are displaced Washingtonians, and we'd love to have some dim sum, but don't know where to get it. Thanks for any recommendations!

Hocking Hills fine dining [SE Ohio]

My girlfriend and I ended up staying here last weekend and had a lovely time. The breakfasts were tasty, with particularly good cinnamon-coconut granola, and some nice bread pudding-inspired options. The dinner chef was much better than the morning chef. Though his dishes were not wildly innovative (you won't find any molecular gastronomy here), they were skillfully executed, well-seasoned, well-balanced, fresh, and suited to the locale. We tried the deconstructed shepherd's pie, which had very tender lamb medallions and a beautiful, full-flavored jus that was the essence of shepherd's pie. A butternut cake appetizer served with tomato orange marmalade was delicious, though a little heavier on the marmalade than it could have been - thankfully, warm sourdough at the table helped us clean up the excess marmalade. We also had a perfect steak and fresh butternut squash ravioli in a cream sauce with cranberries and walnuts. They also served a walnut cheesecake that was very good - the walnuts were incorporated throughout the cake and crust so that a walnut flavor permeated every bite. The flourless chocolate cake was as rich and moist as it should be, though somewhat dated by being served with raspberry coulis. They also featured some local Belgian-style beers at their bar, which went very nicely with our dinner. So, while certainly not the trendiest place, the food (especially dinner) was flavorful, technically sound, and just what we wanted after a day of hiking.

Hocking Hills fine dining [SE Ohio]

Hi, Hounds,

I'd like to take my girlfriend to the Hocking Hills for a winter birthday weekend. We both love to eat well, so, I wonder: Is it worth going to dinner somewhere like Glenlaurel or the Inn at Cedar Falls? These seem to be the finer of the area dining options, but I do want to make sure that they're not serving glorified country club food. If they are, I'll book a place with a kitchen and make our meals.

New cart in town - Sauca

Hi, Hounds,

Has anyone been privy to the taste tests being run by the street food cart, Sauca? I looked over their menu (http://blog.eatsauca.com/index.php/20...) and am very tempted by the variety of wraps available. I love the Fojol Brothers, and wonder if this might be their next big competition. Does anyone know?

Delicious new Indian truck

Hi, Hounds,

Last Saturday found me staggering out of the Black Cat (14th & T) and onto the Fojol Brothers food truck. It seems that the enterprise is pretty new, based on their website, and that they've been roaming around NW on weekend nights, delivering tasty chicken masala, saag paneer, and other curries. Has anyone else come across them? They play dance music, wear fake mustaches and turbans, and are pretty noticeable in their retro trailer with compost collection bins on the back of the truck. I really enjoyed their chicken masala, and found it well-balanced and spicy.

Where to find Morcilla Sausage?

I recently had some morcila from La Tienda - a Latino food purveyor in NOVA. The sausage was tasty and fresh.

Central

I went in late October for a birthday dinner and found the food to be delicious. The portions are also tremendous, so the $21 fried chicken came out to be three excellent, $7 meals for me. Likewise, please try the gin rickey with black pepper - for the savory cocktail lover, it's perfect.

Though Ironbridge may be better, if you have a Cuban hankering, you could try Cuba de Ayer on 198 (close to the intersection with 29).

Nori in Columbia Heights

I've been watching the transformation of the Mayorga Lounge at 14th and Park into the Nori Sushi restaurant with some curiosity. Has anyone been yet? I notice that it's still owned by the Mayorga company - does anyone know if the chef for the new restaurant is the same one who brought a Korean/pan-Asian menu to the place in the last month and a half before the Mayorga Lounge closed its doors?

Udon Noodles/Tempura in DC and NoVa

I had some very flavorful udon at Murasaki - the dashi broth was light and tasty and the noodles were springy and very fresh.

Fresh, healthful food with lots of vegetables?

Hi, Hounds,

I have some friends recovering from a week at the beach and its excesses and they're stopping through for dinner tonight on their way back to Philly - my thought was to go to Jackie's or Java Green, since both are relatively close to a highway and pretty healthful with decent parking opportunities at this time of the evening. Do you have any other thoughts? I don't usually go out to eat my vegetables, since I make them at home, and am at a loss.

Thanks!

What's a good spot for a picnic in DC?

One of my favorite picnic spots is Malcolm X/Meridian Hill Park between U Street and Columbia Heights. It's currently undergoing some renovation, but it has plenty of benches, flat lawns, and more neoclassical fountains than you'll find anywhere else in D.C.

Powdered cheese for popcorn

Another, less conventional, optionmight be nutritional yeast flakes. They're surprisingly similar to cheddar in flavor and stick beautifully to popcorn. I adore cheddar and was a quick convert. Sadly, I've not had luck finding a local supplier.

4 vegetable tasting at Citronelle?

Hi, Olive123, I did this at Citronelle and had one of the most inventive and delicious meals of my life. There was a great range of flavors and preparations. I really enjoyed it and would encourage you to go wholeheartedly, were it not for the fact that I did this menu in 2002. You may want to wait and see what other hounds have to say.

Temperance Hall mushroom burger

Hi, Hounds,

Last summer I had the most delicious mushroom burger of my life at Temperance Hall. Sadly, Temperance Hall closed and I am left without a source of vegetarian delight. Does anybody have a connection to Temperance Hall and know if that mushroom burger is moving to a new place? Or, better yet, does somebody have a recipe?

Thanks!

D'Vines opening soon? How about Julia's?

Hi, I'm eagerly awaiting the opening of D'Vines - a beer/wine store - in Columbia Heights. I love their sister store in Adams Morgan. Does anybody know when they're going to open the doors? Likewise, Julia's Empanadas has been set to open for October 2007 since June 2007 and I haven't seen any action. What's the news? Thanks, hounds!
