Chocolate-covered coffee beans - where ??

Rogers' Chocolates carries them. I don't see them listed in their catalogue but have been told that they always have them in-store. They have stores in Gastown, Granville Island & Whistler in your area.

Happy Hour on the Strip

We stayed at the Signature last June and went to Seablue's happy hour twice (or maybe it was 3x?!). The oysters and the prawns were very good and kept us coming back. Perfect food for a hot day. The calamari was good too. They had a special on Sangria as well as beer. Diego's and one of the other restaurants at MGM also had happy hour specials that looked decent.

Waffles for a crowd

I need to make a pile of waffles for an office breakfast event (probably about 40 people!). My usual recipe is for yeast waffles, but with the number I need to cook I'm looking for an easier recipe. I'll also have to make them the day before, so they need to re-heat well. Anyone have any suggestions or good recipe sources?

Off The Grid -- Dogs Allowed?

I don't remember seeing any dogs either. The night I was there it was quite crowded in the circle of trucks at times, so it may not be so much fun for a dog unless you can find a quiet spot.

Dry aged, triple AAA beef - can it be found on Van Isle?

Another butcher to try is Glenwood Meats

Going to be in San Francisco November 20th - 30th

I'll second the rec for OTG. My sister & I went when in SF last month & really enjoyed it. We wanted to experience the amazing street cart food but couldn't follow twitter while there, so it was perfect having a big group of them in one spot. Great atmosphere and good sangria too!

Recs for non-Tim Hortons donuts in Victoria/Vancouver Island?

On the Island, hands down Sidney Bakery in Sidney. They are fresh, light and delicious. I'm not really a baked goods gal, but I simply cannot resist them, and so far haven't met anyone else who can either.

House of Prime Rib?

Okay, I went to HOPR! We arrived a bit late without reservations - not a good idea. We waited 2 hours for a table for 2.....yikes! Luckily we got a table in the lounge so waited comfortably with wine and chatted with other walk-ins in the same boat.

When we were finally seated there was a definite party atmosphere in the room thanks to our great waiter and friendly fun people at the tables around us. Rabaja is right - it was kind of a Disneyland experience. The food was very good (though after waiting so long we may have eaten anything!). The meat was perfectly cooked and melted in my mouth. When I got through it, I was asked if I wanted another piece. Did I want seconds??? I wanted it, but knew I couldn't eat much more. The one disappointing thing was they ran out of yorkshire. We gave them a (friendly) hard time over it. I mean, how hard is it to make another batch of yorkshire pudding? We are both yorkshire fans and were looking forward to trying HOPR's as it's something we never see on a menu. Oh well, it left more room for the rest of the meal.

Overall we had a great time. I know there are a million other amazing restaurants to visit in SF (I'll post my highlights of the rest of my trip soon), but we don't have anything remotely like this where I'm from. I simply couldn't resist the rolling cart of prime rib!! Would I go back? Probably not. Am I glad I went? Definitely. Thanks for the feedback before I went!

House of Prime Rib?

After seeing this place on No Reservations, I put it on my mental list for the next time I visited SF. But is it actually good and worth the price?

Chefs vs City San Francisco

Thanks all! I'm in Canada and there's always a long delay for these shows to air here, I don't know why. So a new show for me and an old one for you guys. I'll check out Y Ben, thanks.

Chefs vs City San Francisco

Did anyone see this episode? Where did they go for the Dim Sum bit?

MGM Grand restaurants -tasting menu

I've been drooling over some of the spring tasting menus & looking forward to sampling when we're there (7days to go!!). They say they're available util May 31st. I've been expecting these will change a bit into summer tasting menus, but so far haven't seen anything on the websites. Any thoughts on this? We have a reservation at Craftsteak and would love to do a tasting menu to change it up from the amazing steak, spuds & veg we had from the main menu there last year.

Grocery stores near the strip

This is terrific - thanks for all the tips everyone! We'll think about renting a car because I'd love to go to Trader Joes. And I wouldn't have thought of delivery; that's a great idea.

Grocery stores near the strip

My husband & I will be staying at the Signature MGM for 6 nights next month. We're coming for the restaurants and the pools, but since we'll have a kitchen it would be nice to have some things in our room.

We're Canadian, and not familiar with US grocery chains. It looks like Vons is fairly close by, but is it any good? We're thinking of breakfasts, snack and late-night items - fresh fruit, granola, juice, maybe bulk and frozen foods - that sort of thing. And if beer & wine is cheaper than on the strip, of course we'll want that too! Any suggestions on where to go?

Flourless chocolate torte baby cakes?

I've made Gourmet's recipe for flourless chocolate torte before, using an 8 inch pan and it was delicious! I'd like to do a double batch for Christmas dessert. The recipe calls for a 9 inch pan and says to bake for 35-40 minutes (the smaller batch in the 8" pan baked for 25 min). I'd really like to use my oversized muffin pan and make baby cakes, but not sure how long to reduce the baking time. Any advice?

Arepa flour and/or black garlic in Vancouver?

Thanks fmed - I haven't been there but I'm already drooling at the thought! I'm over this coming w/e with non-foodie family, so I'll have to try some sweet-talking or trickery to get there. Fingers crossed....

Cooking stuffing separately but still delicious?

Thanks for all the great ideas everyone! I'm going to make a batch of stock and then start experimenting. I never use butter in my stuffing, so I'll definitely be trying that because it makes total sense to me for the flavour and moisture. Oh yes, this is going to be fun!

Arepa flour and/or black garlic in Vancouver?

Thanks to you both for the suggestions. I'll have to track down Los Guerreros! We just don't have that sort of stuff over here. I had a pupusa for the first time in San Francisco over a year ago & fell in love! I tried making them, but made a mess of it - it's not as easy as it looks! :)

Arepa flour and/or black garlic in Vancouver?

I'm heading to Vancouver this weekend (off the rock!) and wonder if anyone knows where I might find arepa flour or black garlic? I've got both these things in my head as "want to try" but have scoured Victoria without success!

Cooking stuffing separately but still delicious?

I love stuffing. I've always stuffed the bird, because the stuffing comes out moist and flavourful. This year, for various reasons, I want to make a stuffing that will cook separately. But I'm a bit dubious on how to do this without it being a dry, boring dish.

What tips do you have for delicious "dressing"?

Port Angeles Crab Festival Oct 9-11

This looks like a fun thing to do, but is it worth $100 3-hour round trip ferry ride day trip (plus 2 1/2 hour total check-in times) from Victoria? I haven't been to PA in years, so I'm thinking this may be a good excuse to poke around. Anyone have any opinions?

Save my homemade plum sauce!

Hmmm...leftover wine?! That's a great idea, thanks for putting my head in a different direction!

Canning salsa verde?

I've had great success canning salsa verde when I've had a bumper crop of tomatillos. I go the max for heat processing at 20 minutes. I don't find it gloppy - I just give the jar a shake before I open one because it does settle after sitting.

Help - Chili a little too hot

I ditto the sugar idea. Just add it bit by bit - you want to counteract the heat, not sweeten it. As long as the heat isn't completely over the top the sugar trick really seems to work.

Save my homemade plum sauce!

I made and canned an asian-style plum sauce the summer before last. It's yummy, but I haven't been too adventurous in using it. Which means I have a lot of jars still to use before the end of it's shelf life! How do all you Hounds use plum sauce?

Where do you buy your seeds from?

I mostly buy local. I live on Vancouver Island BC and have bought seed from West Coast Seeds for many years without disappointment. I also go to my local Seedy Saturday event each year and participate in the seed exchange and buy from smaller local vendors. I figure if they've grown it and saved seeds in my climate, I'll be successful growing it too. For unusual things I sometimes cave and supplement elsewhere (I'm a seed catalogue junkie in the winter) and I faithfully buy seed spuds from a farm in Alberta.

What to do with blue corn?

I saw a bag of dried blue corn and was intrigued, so couldn't resist buying it. But now that I've got it home, what do I do with it? The kernels are small, like regular yellow corn. Can I reconstitute it and use it as a replacement for hominy in something like posole? Any ideas??

looks like beans taste like a radish?

I've grown rat tail radish before and agree that's what you've got. Use the pods fresh in salads or stir-fries. Pick them when they're smaller and still have a snap to them. If you wait too long to harvest them they'll become dry and fibrous (and not tasty!).

Annie's Organic Ketchup

I love Annie's Goddess Dressing, and just noticed their ketchup in the store. Has anyone tried it?

Victoria - Lard?

Where can you buy lard? Can you get it from a butcher's (Slaters, Glenwoods)?
