authentic italian in bay ridge or bensonhurst

< I can personally vouch for Il Colosseo being an exceptional restaurant where everything is prepared fresh and in front of you. I'm a first generation Sicilian from Bensonhurst. My parents were born in Sciacca. Colosseo, Europa on 65th st and 20th ave, and Joe's Focacceria Palermitana on Ave U and Mcdonald are among the most authentic Sicilian restaurants in the city.

Yup there you go you got it! The caffe's show Palermo, Catania, and pretty much all the Serie A games on the weekends. Champions League games too. Great atmosphere too, you'd think it was the World Cup all year round in some of those places! haha...

Absolutely, it reverted back about 2 yrs ago. As for Il Colosseo, I think you might be confusing it with a similar storefront on the same block, Caffe' Sorrento, they both have the same owner and exact same exterior design. The speciale del Colosseo pizza is delicious. The snapper is done very well there too.

I find myself correcting people on this a lot but Joe's of Ave U Focacceria Palermitana is owned AND operated by Sicilians. The Lo Verde family as a matter of fact. I'm a first generation Sicilian from Bensonhurst who's entire family hails from Sciacca so maybe your just not understanding dialects. The food is out of this world and ten times better then Gino's, although the tripe there is done very well. Cat Pop, their are so many options for Italian food in the area, especially Europa Ristorante on 20th Ave and 65th St, a wonderful restaurant with brick oven pizza and Sicilian specialties. Same goes for Il Colosseo on 18th ave and 78th st. A newcomer to the neighborhood that I just love, is Bella Sicilia, located on Bath Ave btwn 16th and 17th aves. Have a great time seeing the lights! Ciao!

Real Brooklyn Pizza

I've been saving this but consistently the best slice i've ever had ( and i must've eaten at almost every pizzeria in southern brooklyn) is from Grotta Azzurra Pizzeria & Restaurant on 21st ave right off 86th st in Bensonhurst. Great crispy crust with a thin layer of cheese over the perfect amount of sauce EVERY single time. Andrea and his wonderful sicilian family are always there making you feel at home. ciao.

Favorite Bensonhurst Italian - restaurant and dessert cafe?

try Tommaso's on 86th st and 15th ave for great food and wine, Mona Lisa is on the same block. For great sicilian try Bella on the corner of 71st and 18th Ave, tons of italian families and great pasta con sarde, sicilian eggplant, they have live italian bands all night long on the weekends and is also just a block away from either Villabate or Cristoforo Columbo pasticceria's. Caffe Italia is across the street for an amazing espresso. For another great meal I'd also give Il Colosseo a shot, very good brick oven pizza's (not as good as Europa's at 65th and 20th who by the way also have their own pasticceria next door) and great fresh fish at 77th and 18th, their are caffes up the block or around the corner for dessert, Caffe Sorrento or Caffe Aurora. Buon Appetito e Mangia Bene!

Bensonhurst Restaurants

jfores i have to disagree a little with you, i'm an italian that lives in bensonhurst. south bensonhurst past 86th st is a mostly residential area that contains alot of italians, go through there one day most of the businesses on harway ave, cropsey ave, bath ave are italiano owned. and 18th ave past 70th st are seeing the opening of Caffe Bella and Villabate- Alba Pasticceria. Italian ices places (Ralphs) are still opening as far north as 61st st on the block of Aldo. The older Russian crowd in the nabe is dying away fast and was more of a factor in the mid 1990's

Pizza dough in Brooklyn- Where to purchase?

any bakery or pizzeria in Bensonhurst, Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bath Beach will stock pizza dough. A personal fave of mine is the dough from Nuccio's Bakery on Av. U and Van Sicklen St.. Joe's of Ave U Focacceria Palermitana is only a block away for so amazing Sicilian soul food.

Bensonhurst Restaurants

i gotta disagree a little, while the nabe has changed a little wat neighborhood hasn't, the asians, eastern europeans have stores on 86th st up until aboud 18th ave but even with that theres alot of italian character on that strip, with the surrounding side streets still mainly italian. for instance, down Ave U, Stillwell Ave, 20th Ave, 18th Ave, 17th Ave, 86th St past 18th ave, 15th ave, 13th ave, etc the flavor is all Italian, including many new businesses springing up in the last couple of yrs and new Italians moving to the area and many of the young families deciding to raise their families here.

GODFATHER style Italian restaurant

Alot of restaurants fit that bill in Bensonhurst, Dyker Heights and Bay Ridge. I'm gonna name a few that don't get as much press as some of the others on the boards: La Palina, Ave O right off of 65th st, Bensonhurst amazing red sauce neopolitan cuisine, Villa Fiorita 18th ave and 78th st, Bensonhurst great sicilian and neoplitan mix and Ponte Vecchio, 4th ave and 88th st, Bay Ridge must try the gnocchi napoletana della casa.

Canolis in Bay Ridge?

all the bakeries listed here serve up tremendous cannoli. i'd like to suggest rimini pasticceria on 68th and bay parkway. everyone should look forward to the grand re-opening of Alba on 18th ave later this yr, as the cannoli there should be amazing in their brand new all imported from italia caffe.

What's good near Dyker Beach golf course?

hey Tay, i don't think Mona Lisa's cream puffs were anything special although most pastries there are. i think the bakery with the really good cream puffs is dolce italia on 13th ave in the low 70's, lemme know if you find out for sure though, good luck!
