Chile Rellenos in Austin

Tres Amigos, El Azteca, and Matt's El Rancho all serve chili rellenos. I am on a low carb diet and eat all all three of these places regularly because of this dish.

Best BBQ in Texas

Barbecue is a funny business. Here in Texas, brisket is the real test I suppose. I wont mention the name of the place (in Abilene) where I recently ate. Had a brisket sandwich there. Best brisket I ever put in my mouth, and I have eaten a lot of it in my lifetime all over the state. The next day at lunch, I couldnt wait to get back to the place for another sandwich. Ordered an extrat one to take home. Ended up tossing both in the trash. Inedible. Tough, dry, terrible meat. I find the time of day and piece of the brisket they slice from can have as much to do with the quality of the meal as the skill of the pit boss.

After 20 years of living in Austin, I will drive to the Salt Lick if I have out of town guests. My experiences there tend to be good, and my guests always tell me they prefer it to anyithing in the city or in Lockhart. I agree.

[DFW] Cowboys BBQ and Ribs

Ate there a couple of weeks ago on Sunday and the place was dead. I could understand why. The meats were dry and the sauce was equivilant to a bad bottled brand. The sides were inedible and cold. The wait staff was polite but spent most of their time standing around gossiping in hushed tones. It was really a little depressing. Beef ribs were listed on the menu, but when I asked the waitress, she acted like she had never heard of beef ribs and told me that they did not serve them. Later found out the the police had recently been called to the place and that one of the principles had brought a gun into the bar area in the middle of a dispute with an owner. Just sold. Hope it gets better.

Where is the Best fried chicken in SA.TX

Earl Abel's is very reliable. They make a great cracklin' gravy and have excellent mashers. Sinful, old fashion desserts like your grandma used to make on Sunday.

You might also like the fried chicken at the Pig Stand on Broadway. It is cheap and has a good crust if you like a thicker or crunchier crust. Not for everyone, but I like it much better than any of the large chains.

High-End Tonic

Try the Schweppes "Indian" Tonic. It comes in small bottles with a yellow label like their standard tonic. It costs over $2 per little bottle here in Austin, but it is head and shoulders above the other Schweppes tonic. I can't drink anything else now that I'm hooked on it. I mix with Boodles also. I find Boodles slightly herbal quality pleasing.

Best BEEF ribs in Dallas (BBQ)?

Pappas Brother's BBQ on Northwest Highway in Dallas has beef ribs, all you can eat specials on some days. Cant recommend them very highly though. Iron Works on Red River in Austin has the best I'v eaten.

Best BBQ in Texas

I was extremely disappointed by the State Line. Found the meat to be tough, lacking flavor, and just a vehicle for the sauce. It didn't taste slow smoked at all. I have eaten at the County Line a few times, and I doubt that the two restaurants share ownership. The State Line is heavily marketed to the hotel crowd. I would be surprised if many locals consider it a favorite. Having said that, I dont have any suggestions for eating out in El Paso.

Best Fried Chicken in Dallas?

I have heard that Dean Fearing is cooking pan fried chicken at the Ritz Carlton on Sundays. Sounds very pricey for chicken.

Pig Stand

I just ate there again a couple of weeks ago. They have added some barbecued meats to the menu as well as some german pork based items. I had a fried pork cutlet that was ok. Nothing to write home about. They still have lunch specials every day that seem to be popular among the locals. I forgot to ask if they are still open 24 hours. The manager and the staff are very nice and accomodating.

Best BBQ in Texas

The "old" Kruez in Lockhart is now "Smitty's." It is run by Kruez sister and brother in law. I prefer it to the new Kruez. I generally shy away from Blacks when in Lockhart. They are trying too hard to appeal to the Sunday covered dish crowd and dont focus enough on their meats. If you are ever in Fort Worth try Sammy's on Beach St. Wonderful brisket and ribs and a sauce that you wont find anywhere else. It is my favorite place in Texas. Coopers? Bad experiences both times I ate there. The meat was dry. Over priced.

Looking to take a BBQ Tour

Sammy's Barbecue on East Belknap, near Beach Street, in Fort Worth has been in business since at least WWII. They specialize in brisket and ribs which they serve with a remarkable au jus like sauce. It is tangy and sweet and people are addicted to it. I also love their fries and onion rings. Unlike anything you will find elsewhere.

[AUS] Chicken-fried Steak in Austin

I have eaten hundreds if not thousands of CFSs in my time. I have lived in Austin for 17 years and ended my long search for the best at the Bakehouse restaurant on Manchaca Road. The CFS is sort of overlooked on their menu but it is a winner. The meat seems to be a highly tenderized round steak. Not processed and i doubt if it was ever frozen. The steak is battered at the restaurant not at a factory. The crust adheres well, doesnt separate from the meat as much as I have encountered elsewhere, and it is expertly seasoned. The gravy is sublime. The menu is so eclectic that I doubt if many people come here for a downhome Texas item - but they should.

Best BEEF ribs in Dallas (BBQ)?

If you go to Austin for business or fun try the Iron Works BBQ on Cesar Chavez at Red River downtown. They have the biggest and best beef ribs I have ever eaten on their daily menu.

Absolute best burger in Texas?

When in Dallas I eat at Chip's on Lovers Lane. Their burgers are hot off the grill, tasty, great condiments. They use a poppyseed bun unlike most places and I have never been disappointed. Burger House on Mockingbird Lane is also pretty good.I will have to go back to Chris Madrid's in San Antonio. I had the refried bean burger and was greatly disappointed. Couldn't finish it. Also the service at Madrid's was very disinterested. As Maybe it was a bad day and maybe there is a better option. As far as fast food options: If your town has a Culver's give it a try. It is head and shoulder's above usual fast food fare.

Pig Stand

The Pig Stand on Broadway closed briefly last year but has re-opened and has the same menu. They have a really good pork loin sandwich, excellent onion rings and what I consider the best fried chicken in SA other than Earl Abel's.
