Southern Ingredients: What should I pick up when I'm in NC/VA next week

Good job!

The Boar and Castle was famous around these parts. We cruised through there all the time.

Those Guilford Mills grits are the best. Glad you had a good time.

So what did you end up getting?

I think that's true.

Also, you you can get to the Greensboro Farmer's Market (the curb market downtown, not the big one) David Wright makes and sells delicious minna cheese. If you can't do that look for Palmetto Cheese at Harris Teeter.

That Farmer's Market is great.

While you're here in G'boro go to Coliseum Cafe for some delicious fried okra.

Asheville - Sliced Lemons with Iced Tea

I was a waitress too way back in the day, so I know about side work. I just remember trying to keep those customers happy. Tips are awesome positive reinforcement!

I've had good luck with folding the slice in half and squeezing it like a wedge.

I don't THINK it's an NC thing. I think it's a save-money thing.

Just ask for the wedge.

What to do with vacation okra

I was at a famous Charleston restaurant. The tables had dried okra pods as arrangements on them. : D

Going to Kiawah --dining suggestions

Charleston is not a seasonal town that closes up in winter. Kiawah has year round residents.

Wild Olive gets good reviews. Fat Hen has wonderful brunch.

Like miss piggy stated, there are so many great restaurants in Charleston. Do a search on here, narrow it down to a few and people can help you with choices.

Charleston: some unusual suspects

Are you willing to drive up to North Chuck? EVO is wonderful, full of local people and local food. I can personally vouch for the Pork Trifecta. Big surprise there, right?

Crab picking

It's fun to do on site. Just spread out newspapers and start hammering.

I would also recommend getting your trash out ASAP. Those shells will stink within a day in the heat.

Crab picking

I think because it's messy and tables don't turn over quickly. Just a guess.

NY to Charleston (Kiawah), am I missing anything?

Good job! Glad you had fun. I love the Fat Hen. That duck breakfast dish is one of my favorites.

I wish. However, I have great friends who enjoyed it twice. Holly likes it too.

I'll try those. I can't remember if I told y'all this: Mama helped resettle many of the Vietnamese families that live here. One of her resettlees (is that a word?) has a place called Binh Minh across the street and out a little from Rearn. I like it a lot and go when ever I'm on that side of town.

Hahaha, yeah you betta. Net zero is tough in the lowcountry.

I think you would like Schoolhouse better than Brown's. Brown's is a buffet but you can order off the menu too. I guess it depends on when it's lunchtime for your people. Remember, dog can't stay in the car!

When I lived in Mt. P. I loved the Wreck. But I get your point. Kiawah is far from there. My Piggly Wiggly had the best fried chicken ever. I miss it.

My Charleston friends say the MacIntosh is their new favorite. If you go, let me know what you think.

I'm SURE you don't want to go back to Lex 1, but I had hushpuppies there yesterday that were perfect. Really hot, crunchy, and melt-in-your-mouth. I haven't had any that good in a long time.

When I drive to Charleston from Greensboro, I always take 52 from Florence into Kingstree. Brown's there is good, not as good as Scott's.

Also Schoolhouse in Scranton SC is pretty good. You could get off that god-awful 95 and go a back way into Charelston and try 2. They are both on 52. It will be slower, but I always enjoyed that drive so much more than the interstate. Plus Brown's has a drive through, so you don't have to leave the dog in the car.

McCabe's was great last time I went but it's been a couple of years.

ISO Hidden Gems in Greensboro and Winston Salem NC

Seriously old thread, but since it's been revived, I'll add Coliseum Country Cafe. We're going there for lunch.

Fearrington village

I've been to Inn, but it was a long time ago. It was really nice. When it first open it looked out over farmland. Now it looks out over development land.

I've more recently been to the Granary. Not as fancy, but nice salads, and local food. The Village has cute shops.

+1 for Smiley's.

I work in Lexington on weekends now. Unfortunately, I can't change my screen name to "Sue in Lex #1-ville". I got to Lex ! on Saturdays and Smiley's on Sundays. It will do you right.

Charleston or Savannah for Thanksgiving weekend foodie trip?

Same here WhansaMi. I get lost a lot since I've moved back to NC. I actually called the Triad the Triangle. Oh well.

Like I said, both places are nice that time of year. Many of the nice Charleston places do nice Thanksgiving menus, but they won't post until later on in the year.
