The new Sandwhich now open for lunch (Chapel Hill, NC)

BEWARE of the McDonalds parking spots. Predatory towing (even if you are a McDonalds customer... best to eat your meal and leave immediately - - don't wander to a nearby shop or two after your meal or your car will be disappeared). $100 cash to get your car back (but you've got to get to the towing lot out in the country on the other side of Carrboro first).

New Visions of Africa (Durham, NC)

Lunch today was DEEEE-licious!

New Visions of Africa
1306 Fayetteville Road...between 147 and NCCU

The owner/cook of this place is one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to talk to. Had we the time, we could have stuck around for a coupla hours and continued our discussions on home cooking, women and their problems (ducking and running), and the weather.

Both my buddy and I had the smothered chicken. Leg and a thigh that had to have been slow cooked for at least a couple of hours literally smothered in a delicious and not too heavy light brown gravy. Served over rice.

I had the collards (a bit too sharp for my taste) and the candied yams (hard to explain how rich and filling these were). My buddy got the green beans and the mac&cheese...both of which he said were excellent.

Served with a piece of cornbread that was moist and crumbly and a little bit sweet. VERY good.

Properly sweetened southern iced tea for me...fresh lemonade for my buddy. Yum!

All home cookin' here. Nothing out of a box.

$8.03 including tax.

If you need incense, he sells some wonderful smelling stuff at the counter...along with various scented soaps. The dessert case looked like a church bake sale...but we were WAY too full for more food.

Stop by and support this guy. He's a keeper.

Randy's on Hope Valley Road in Durham across from Woodcroft Shopping Center.
Pulcinella's in Woodcroft Shopping Center.
Italian Pizzaria in Chapel Hill.
Mellow Mushroom in Durham or Raleigh (despite the numerous folks who seem to dislike MM...I like it very much).

Milltown - Carrboro, NC

Luck of the draw, I guess? My fries were perfect. The bread on my steak sandwich was great. Our service (from the hostess to the waitress to the bartender) was excellent. Oh well.

Milltown - Carrboro, NC

If you haven't discovered Milltown in Carrboro...you need to. If you like the Federal (in Durham)...you will like this place (it's their "sister" ship).

Went there last night before the UNC game and had a really nice experience. Place was FULL at 7:00 pm. Hostess said "30 minutes"...took about 25 to get a table...but that was ok cause we just sat at the bar and had a couple.

Decent on-tap selection (need more taps and more variety) that included about 15 beers (alagash, victory, guiness, and some others) and a pretty extensive bottled beer list although it seemed to be pretty damned heavy on the belgians (not that there is anything wrong with that). No Triangle Brewing Co. brew...sadly.

Service was great. Food was pretty damned good. Prices were VERY reasonable. I had an awesome steak sandwich with grilled onions, melted gruyere, garlic aoili mayo, and a bowl 'o juice ("au jus" for you frenchies). Everything about it was good...including the fries ("frites" for you damned frenchies). Wife got the chicken nachos - - - OH MY GOD what a huge plate of nachos. Good chips, decent salsa, good black beans, good grilled chicken, slathered in sour cream and melted cheddar. Yum.

The do brunch on Saturday and Sunday, had a good "specials" list, and do mussels w/ frites (there's that damned french again!) if you're so inclined. Regarding the mussels...you can order them one of, if I remember correctly, 4 or 5 different ways. Nice.

No smoking inside.

Blowing Rock Restaurants

Don't know if you are looking for fancy or not. Six Pence Pub is casual and has good Brit style pub food and a good beer selection. There's a really good Mellow Mushroom, too. BBQ? Try Woodlands. Fancier? Gamekeeper rocks! Mast Farm Inn (out in Valle Crucis) is also very good. Best Cellar for a great steak. Knight's on Main or Sonny's for a great breakfast.

To do? There's a LOT of great hiking along the BRP. Short hikes, long hikes. Moses Cone house is a nice stop.
