Good Chow near Roosevelt Avenue

My friend and I did a major urban hike. We had dim sum at Jade Asian in Flushing which was excellent. However, we pigged out so much that we were not really hungry enough to eat until we got to Brooklyn. We passed up some very interesting street carts along Roosevelt Avenue, most selling sausages and/or tasty looking pork. Definitely worth a trip back. We did stop for cafe con leche at the El Pequeño coffee shop. The mostly Ecuadorian menu looked interesting and there was a musician on hand to serenade the patrons. Can anyone offer any recommendations about this place?

Before crossing the Brooklyn Bridge we went to the Chip Shop for a light meal. The fried macaroni and cheese was quite bland. There was almost no cheese flavor. But all the fried deserts more than satisfied our cravings for sugar and cholesterol. Next time we will get the fish and chips which we were told by other customers were very, very good. After a stop at the Apple Store in Soho we walked up to Penn Station where we topped off our trip with a coffee and a Krispy Kreme donut. Very plebeian, but just what we needed at the time. The trip covered 20.5 miles and we consumed God knows how many calories.

Good Chow near Roosevelt Avenue

Thanks, Bob. There's a ton of information there. However, the longer post was from 2003. Any suggestions as to what's holding up?

Good Chow near Roosevelt Avenue

Tomorrow a friend and I are going on a walking trip through Queens. We are starting out in Flushing and walking west to the 59th Street Bridge. We will probably stay on Roosevelt Avenue most of the way and we are looking for good, cheap ethnic food along that Roosevelt. We would not mind taking a detour from our chosen route if it meant finding some great food. Thanks for all suggestions. Addresses or approximate locations would be appreciated.

Mambi

I recently stopped in at Mambi on Broadway and 177th Street. I had a very good Cuban Sandwich and a cafe con leche which really hit the spot on a cold day. The waitresses were friendly and a number of the locals who were eating lunch there greeted me when I came in. The place has a nice friendly vibe to it.

I would like to know if there are any foodies out there who have eaten at Mambi who could offer suggestions as to what foods I might try on future visits. Thanks for all responses

Crepe Lady Retiring

I was told by a friend who talked to her a few days ago that Madeleine, otherwise known as "the Crepe Lady" will be retiring at the end of the month from her position at the Cyber Cafe on 49th Street just east of Eighth. She makes her own batter, uses the best ingredients, and makes extremely tasty crepes. And she is a sweet lady. She is only there from Wednesday to Saturdays. If you haven't tasted one of her crepes you are in for a treat. But only for a few more weeks. Very sad.

Am thinking of taking a friend out for lunch between flights at Kennedy. How is the food at Lenny's Clam Bar on Cross Bay Boulevard in Howard Beach?

Good Food Near Kennedy

I have to spend about 8 hours between planes at Kennedy Airport this Thursday. I have access to a car and would like to sample some good local chow. Any suggestions? Any cuisine is fine, but moderate to low cost is much preferred.

Broadway Walk

In a couple of days some friends and I will be going on a hike from the top of Manhattan to the Battery. We will be on Broadway most of the way. Any suggestions for great food along the way? Any cuisine is good. Needs to be inexpensive (or reasonably so) and the type of place we can eat in in shorts and tee shirts. We are willing to walk a few blocks in either direction from Broadway if the food is good.

any new good dessert places?

There is a place on 49th a few doors east of 8th Avenue. It is called the Cyber Cafe. There is a little French woman there who makes excellent crepes. During the summer I had a fresh peach crepe there that was the best I had ever had. She makes her own crepe batter and cuts the fruit just before making each crepe. During the winter I have had to settle for preserves as filling, but the crepes are still outstanding. If you are a Nutella fan I believe that is one of the offerings. My favorites are the apricot and chestnut preserves. The "Crepe Lady" as she is called is there from Wednesday until Saturday. I believe and she knocks off at 5:00 PM. However, the first time I went there I arrived at almost 5:30, but she took pity on me and put her apron back on and whipped up the aforementioned peach crepe. She is a sweet lady with a talent for crepes.

Queens Walking Tour

Thanks for the replies. Actually the purpose of the long walk is that we can really chow down without any negative effects on the weight front. We are originally from New York, but live on the East End of Long Island now. We are looking for some chow spots that we would not usually go to because we don't get out to Queens that often. All price ranges and all ethnic varieties are fare game.

Queens Walking Tour

Thanks for the replies. The distance is no problem. We have done as much as 22 miles on similar jaunts. The alternative route sounds interesting. We are most in need of spots to hit on the Roosevelt Avenue part of our journey.

Queens Walking Tour

Some friends and I are planning a NYC walking/eating tour. We plan to walk from Chinatown in Manhattan to Chinatown in Flushing. Our route will take us up the East Side, over the 59th Street Bridge and out Roosevelt Avenue. We plan to make as many eating stops as time and endurance allow. All suggestions as to great chow spots along the route will be appreciated.
