Group dinner at Pine and Bamboo Garden, Nov 12
Some Internet food geeks are getting together to sample widely off the Chinese menu at Pine & Bamboo Garden on Shawnee Mission Parkway.
We're looking at a mostly Cantonese menu shaping up as follow (though not yet set in stone):
Assorted cold plate: pickled jellyfish, sliced beef shank, soy sauce duck, spicy cabbage
Pan-fried dumplings
Fish maw soup with tofu
Pork belly hot pot
Fried flounder
On choy with garlic
Cantonese fried noodle with mixed meat
Hong Kong-style roast duck
Crispy fried soft shell crab with spicy salt
Clam with black bean sauce
The plan is to split the food/tax/tip check evenly, alcohol on your own. I'm expecting that this will come in around $30-35 pp. He's requested a final count a couple days before, so please let me know if there are additions or subtractions from the list.
Drop me an email if you wish to join. The more the merrier.

OMAHA FOOD TRIP
Do folks here not like the Boiler Room for upscale? I had a nice meal there earlier this year.
The Upstream brews their own beer and usually has a cask-conditioned ale on tap:

Oh, I also love La Buvette.
Olathe: Where restaurants go to die...
Maybe not so soon? Ha. Anyway, no, no snapper, but they do a mojarra (tilapia) a la Veracruzana. We opted for the whole fried fish with garlic butter sauce instead.
The tilapia was a worthwhile dish, perhaps a touch fishy for my taste, but I still had no problem polishing off my half. The garlic sauce was very buttery.
We also ordered some chiles rellenos, which I generally shy away from as they’re so often overgreased and overcheesed. Here, however, (while not exactly light) the frying was done with a delicate hand, the chiles themselves were fresh and bright tasting, and, the cheese filling was complemented by what appeared to be stewed beef.
The table salsas here are excellent, both rather thick and full bodied, both in texture and flavor. The green had a lot of tomatillo tartness and good heat, while the red was thick and tasted (the French again) particularly European in spicing. And the chips had a very pleasant, thick, corny crunch.
Posted a couple pics on the KC forum:

KC, MO Patios (Kansas City)
Cool, thanks, do report back. The lamb we had was cooked a perfect medium rare too, so maybe at least they do grilled/broiled meat consistently well. Good to hear on the salads too.
KC, MO Patios (Kansas City)
Sorry if I missed it, did you post more specifics on the food? We had a really bad meal there in Feb or March. Service was great and I love the space, but I can't see going back with the food we had (bad, overpriced cheese plate; some gross watery spinach tortilla things; very nice lamb chops though).
I scanned this thread quickly, didn't see The Farmhouse at 3rd or 4th and Delaware, which must also be close to you. Mixed reviews (my sandwich was pretty good), but nice patio for sure.
Has Artisan Francais in Overland Park, KS closed?
Heard a promising report on the revived Napoleon Bakery in Westport (http://lthforum.com/kc/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=70) for pastries at least.
Don't know about bread and French, but Fervere is very good and very expensive.
Great Chicago Dogs in Kansas City Area (Lenexa, KS)
That picture of pizza looks pretty good, KansasTravel, nice caramelization on the crust. I prefer Chicago thin crust to deep dish too, though it's hard to tell from the pic if that falls within that genre or not.
I hate it when places put cheese on Italian beef. Rosati's and Pizza Oven are other Chicago-centric eateries in town.
Haven't been to Rosati's or Pizza Man here, did visit Pizza Oven and thought the Italian beef was okay, though not very characteristic. They did apply cheese.

KC - Blue Grotto anyone?
Good point, forgot about them. It's been quite a while, but I don't think I liked their pizza very much, and strangely, almost never hear anything about the place. I'd be curious for more recent reports.
KC - Blue Grotto anyone?
It's not the best pizza in KC, but some are better than others. The red sauce is really sweet and not to my taste, but the white pizzas were better. Still, KC is in trouble as far as pizza is concerned. Where did you move from, and what style or what places did you like there? The "Neapolitan" style places here are SPIN!, Blue Grotto, and Pizzabella. I like Pizzabella best of that style, but none are really strong, I don't think.
El Pulgarcito Restaurant in Merriam, Kansas.
Thanks for the review. I've been loading up on pupusas lately, with visits to El Cipote (great overall, ok pupusas, http://lthforum.com/kc/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=30), Sabor Centroamericano (terrific pupusas, ok overall, http://lthforum.com/kc/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=44), and I was going to hit the KCMO El Pulgarcito last week but got distracted by Taqueria el Michoacano on my way.
I haven't been to the Merriam El Pulgarcito in quite a while but need to get back there too while the others are still fresh in my mind. Here are some pics from a couple years back (http://lthforum.com/kc/viewtopic.php?p=218#p218); very much enjoyed the pupusas, curtido seemed more bitter than many, and the pacayas...well, those I could do without.
You've really got to try El Cipote, the plantains, tamale, and empanadas were fantastic.
Cheers,
Aaron
KCMO- Cupcake ala Mode
I've been to Chacko's many times, and the service has always been quite good.
Italian grocery store/deli in KC
I don't think KC really has what you're looking for, unfortunately. Bella Napoli does not feel high-brow at all, but it is expensive. All the stuff you're looking for is tough to get cheap here. I don't really care for Carollo (http://lthforum.com/kc/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=32). You should probably check out La Rocca, which is a wholesaler that sells to the public at about 5th and Charlotte. Decent prices and selection in an old school Italian neighborhood. Cellar Rat wine store in the Crossroads makes their own mozzarella. For good bread, Farm to Market's not bad, Fervere is excellent and very expensive, I think there's one Italian baker who sells around town, but I've not been really impressed with the bread.
Pork tenderloin sandwich in KC
I thought Max's Auto Diner was no more and recently became Phil's Coffee Shop or something like that? Was your meal at the new or old version? I'm surprised Kitty's Cafe's tenderloin hasn't come up in this thread. goroe started another thread last year (not too long after this one) devoted to that sandwich in particular, maybe that's why, but it's really a terrific sandwich, which I probably would have missed but for his recommendation. There's a pic at LTHForum.com/kc (http://lthforum.com/kc/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=21), and also by goroe here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/503503.
Kitty's Cafe- Kansas City
It took me a while, but I finally go around to Kitty's pork tenderloin, good as advertised. I don't usually like even highly praised pork tenderloins, too big and too dry, which is probably in part why I kept putting off Kitty's. I love the triple patty treatment. Nice guy behind the counter too.
A little more and a pic: http://lthforum.com/kc/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=21
Where should my husband eat in KCMO tonight?
Restaurant is scheduled to close for 12-18 months, I believe, along with the renovations.
Where should my husband eat in KCMO tonight?
Harry's does have a good beer and great spirits selection--and I really like the place overall--but they don't actually mix very good cocktails, in my experience.
Agree with the bluestem rec, too, either the lounge for a little more casual and cheaper, or the restaurant for a more formal and expensive tasting menu.
Moving to Creve Coeur, MO, any good restaurants?
What about Il Bel Lago? http://www.ilbellagosaintlouis.com/
About 4 years ago, we visited Cafe Bellagio in the same space and it was terrific (http://www.lthforum.com/bb/viewtopic.php?p=31529#p31529). Not sure how different this similarly named place in the same spot is, or what exactly has been the change. Looks promising despite the weird website.
I 29 between KC and Omaha
Interesting, never heard of this place. Such a short drive, a St. Joe stop usually adds too much time to the trip to be worthwhile, but I really ought to explore St. Joe's a little. Galvin's sounds like a good start.
Are the current KansasTravel and former Keith one and the same, I assume?

KC: Restaurant Reactions to the Recession
Happy hour at Extra Virgin is a good deal, with a number of half price plates.
KC Steak Specials - In Search of Meat on a Budget
RJ's Bob-Be-Que had a Wednesday night steak special, strip or top sirloin, for about 10 bucks that's was quite good. Haven't had it in a year maybe, so I'm not sure if it's still available.
2 BBQ Joints in KC-What to get?
Seems like people are making the assumption that you are going to get just as much food as you can eat, which is understandable, but would not be my approach.
LC's: burnt ends, sliced pork, half slab of ribs, side of beans
Bryant's: sliced beef sandwich, burnt ends, half slab, fries
Keep the leftovers in your hotel fridge if you have one and eat for breakfast the next morning, or on your trip home. Or give the leftovers to an appreciative beggar.
You're coming to KC for some BBQ, for goodness sake. Don't hold back.
Le Fou Frog, Kansas City
>>So with that in mind, I tackled Kansas City this weekend in search of KC’s best KC Strip Steak. At the risk of launching a food(ie) fight, I’m going to boldly say I have found it, at Le Fou Frog.<<
Where else did you try?
Blanc Burgers + Bottles- KC
Um, Delux Burger or no, I don't think the trend of contemporary gourmet burger places was born in Scottsdale.
And Blanc's burger is way better than Chefburger's.
Bourdain in KC
Okay, this is way off-topic here, but does anyone know why the cocktails at Harry's Country Club aren't better?
I love Harry's, the beer list is great, the whiskey is great, the music is great, and yes, even the food is at least pretty good, sometimes better.
And they do seem to *care* about their cocktails, which is pretty critical. But they never come out all that great, in my experience, to the point that I would no longer recommend ordering them.
