Ten best things to eat in Boston

I did look at pictures of the usual roll and it did look salty, but not quite as solid-salt as what I was given. But good to know that level of salt is about what's expected. I guess it's just not the sandwich for me.

Ten best things to eat in Boston

I finally got a beef on weck from ASSBar a few weeks ago and found it somewhat horrifying. I know that the roll is supposed to have salt on it, but this roll had almost a solid salt crust on it. And the salt was embedded in a way that it couldn't be brushed or picked off. It was too salty to be tasty and made my heart hurt after. Is this typical? I haven't yet made it to upstate NY to try the beef on weck there, so I didn't have anything to compare it to, but it didn't seem quite right...

Best Soup for Medicinal Purposes

I like pho tai when I'm healthy and pho ga when I've got a cold. However, last time I had a cold I got pho ga from Pho Pasteur (because Xinh Xinh was closed) and then from Xinh Xinh a few days later and I actually preferred the soup from Pho Pasteur a bit. Mostly because it was lighter. I found the soup from Xinh Xinh to be a bit greasy. Which I might've enjoyed when healthy, but when I'm sick I want something a bit gentler. Still super delicious, though.

Favorite dish in Boston area - under $15

Kao Nar Ped from Rod Dee. Under $10!

Best pollo a la brasa?

I liked the chicken at Rincon Limeno better, but the yucca better at Machu Picchu. Chicha morada was equally delicious at each. Rincon Limeno also has incredibly delicious alfajores.

ISO farro?

The Whole Foods one (it's the one in the brick mentioned below by Gretchen) cooks in around 20 minutes and has a rougher look to it when cooked. The stuff from Pocari's took longer to cook and was very smooth and chewy when cooked. Not sure that I'm describing this very well. But my guess is that the WF stuff is semi-pearled and Polcari's is not. I have to say, I sort of preferred the texture of the WF stuff. Not sure I preferred it enough to spend $8 per package, though.

Best Pot Pie in Boston?

I just tried Harrows for the first time last week and really enjoyed it. I got an individual pie with carrots and potatoes. It was very tasty and full of chicken. I will definitely be going back!

Chinatown for large group with vegitarian options

I find Pho Pasteur to be the best Chinatown bet for vegetarians and vegans, and gluten-free friends have been able to find plenty to eat there as well. They have a giant vegetarian section of the menu and everything I've had there has been pretty good. Not the tastiest or most interesting Chinatown option (and not Chinese food), but it might be your best bet with this group.

What are you having/did you have for lunch today?

Leftover yu hsiang bean curd and spicy green beans from Mary Chung.

ISO farro?

Fresh Pond Whole Foods carries it, though it's very expensive. Polcari's in the North End has it in bulk for much cheaper, but it cooks up a bit differently.

Boston Burger Co.

I think they also need to realize that you can't run a respectable burger place serving burgers that bad. I also got a pretty plain burger and it was amazingly tasteless. Like they vacuumed out the beefy flavor. I won't go back except as a spectator to watch friends eat deep-fried burgers and burgers with bacon and peanut butter on them. There are too many places serving delicious burgers to bother with BBC.

Weird, I had really nice service the one time I went to Cheddar's. Maybe I caught them on a very good day?

Dishes at Rod Dee Thai

I used to eat at the Fenway location all the time. I hope they rebuild soon! My favorite there was Kao Nar Ped. It is roasted duck, chinese broccoli, and a hard boiled egg over rice with a dark sweet sauce. I don't usually like things that are sweet and not spicy (and I do sometimes add hot sauce to this), but it is just delicious and magical. And it's nice to have a very non-greasy thai food option.

Yum. I think I need to venture up to one of the other locations again soon... The Washington Sq. location is really nice. I haven't been to the other yet.

Pre-Prepped Greens?

I'm braising some short ribs to eat for dinner this week. I'm planning to have polenta and sauteed chard with them. Could I wash and chop the chard today and then put it in the fridge to just pull out and cook during the week? Or would it get all gross?

Thanks!

If you HAD to use margarine...

I strongly second the recommendation for Earth Balance. I don't like margarine at all, but this stuff is not too bad and very handy if you have vegan friends. Though honestly I find it's much easier to just make something that is vegan rather than try to alter something to be vegan. Either way, good luck!

Where to Buy Duck Confit

I've seen it at Dave's Fresh Pasta. It seemed very expensive to me, but I'm not sure what the usual price for confit is.

Best Alfajores?

I believe Rincon Limon and Betos have them. Which are better? Is there somewhere that is better than either of these places?

Thanks!

help with fine-tuning weekend plans?

I'll be visiting from Boston this weekend and while I was able to find piles and piles of places to eat at by searching the board, I do have a few questions.

Most of the places I'm hoping to hit seem like they're definitely casual, but I wasn't sure about Yakitori Totto. Would jeans be okay there?

Also I'd like to get a drink or two somewhere with great bartending, but that is casual and relaxed in atmosphere. It is easy to find classic cocktails in Boston, so I guess I would prefer somewhere with more innovative stuff like I've had on the west coast. I've read some threads on cocktails, but nothing's really jumping out as the right place for me. The menu at Death & Co. looks pretty good, but I wasn't sure what the atmosphere would be like. Any suggestions?

Thanks very much for any assistance!

Hong Kong Eatery (1/3/08)

Their pea shoots are by far my favorite in the city (so far). A friend and I went and got 2-meat rice plates. Between the two of us we tried the duck, chicken, roast pork, and ribs. I think the ribs were our favorite. The rest was decent, but not amazing. Mostly just fun to have that many different types of roast meat.

ISO good lobster sauce & appetizers in Somerville

I was also thinking that East Asia would be a good bet for this. Their fried rice is glorious and they have some of the best egg rolls I've ever eaten (I'm not usually a fan). Pretty much everything aside from those two things I've gotten there hasn't been very good, but it does seem like they do a great job with the americanized chinese.

I Have Discovered the Universal Condiment

Well, I got my knives sharpened and didn't get chiles in time to bring them to a food processor, so I guess I'm doing it all by hand again. I do think you're probably right about the food processor chopping them too fine. I don't use a mask for it, but I have learned to always wear gloves after having a burning hand for a day.

I Have Discovered the Universal Condiment

I'm planning to make a ton of this for xmas gifts (with a mix of red and green chiles to make it all festive looking). Would it be a bad idea to use a food processor to chop the chiles? Chopping 2 - 3 pounds of chiles by hand would be a pain. But for some reason I suspect that using a food processor wouldn't work well. Not sure why, though.

Has Green Street switched back to their winter menu? If so, does it still have delicious corn chowder and roasted brussels sprouts on it? I miss that corn chowder...

Seattle is delicious!

I live in Boston and just spent 4 days in Seattle. I wanted to report back on my trip because it was completely delicious and I got many of the places from searching Chowhound. So, thanks!

I went to happy hour twice at Chapel. The bitter strawberry drink is fantastic, the bar staff there were fun and friendly, and I love the atmosphere. I had a tasty cheese plate there and some fish tacos that were very good, but would have been even better with corn tortillas. I got delicious crusty bread, a decent egg sandwich, and an amazing carrot muffin from Dahlia bakery. I ate perfectly charred pizza at Tutta Bella. I had one of the best meals of my life at Etta's (halibut and brussel sprouts, what could be better?). I had a fantastic apple fritter from Top Pot. I got amazing lattes from Victrola, Uptown Espresso, Vivace, and Top Pot (that is in order of deliciousness, though I only had one from each, so it's not exactly a reliable sampling). And I had a few other meals that were decent but not great (when I wasn't in charge of choosing the restaurant).

I wasn't able to get to Matt's in the Market, Lunchbox Laboratory, or Zig Zag, but hopefully next time!

King Fung Garden has Reopened

So has anyone been to the Chinatown King Fung since the change of owners? Or to the Brookline KF since the consolidation? I'm craving chow foon and trying to decide between gong to one of the KF locations or heading to Kantin to try theirs out...

Best LOCAL Food Restaurant in Leominster, MA

Hrm, I was actually there recently and had the gnocchi and thought it was very bad. The sauce was bland and there was so much of it that it was more like a soup. The gnocchi itself was heavy and tough. I agree, they do give you a ton. Luckily I was able to give my leftovers away!

OYAKODON

Actually I don't think either Ittyo or Cafe Mami have broccoli in their oyakodon. I'm not totally sure as it's been awhile since I've had it at either, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't have broccoli. And I think Cafe Mami's was a little tastier.

Chacarero for later

Even the small chacarero is too big for me to eat, so I usually eat half for lunch and then put half in the fridge for dinner. It's not quite as good cold, but fairly close, I think. I get mine without cheese, so maybe that wouldn't be as good cold.
