Peterborough St restaurants returning in June, plus Speed's!

Hooray! Thanks for the update.

Post Your Three Favorite Things You ate in Boston in 2011

Oh, yum. I also love unagi. Thanks for the Kantin tip!

Going to Trade

I thought the drinks were fine, but nothing really blew me away. For food, the avocado dish and chicken liver dish were amazing. Everything else was fine, but didn't really do much for me.

In the mood for good Lo Mein, any suggestions?

Qingdao Garden has pretty tasty lo mein (their fried rice is awful, though).

Fenway Rod Dee is still closed, unfortunately. It looks really nice, but there was no one in there. Hopefully soon!

I was also wondering about this. I might try to stop by there tomorrow and will report back.

Hong Kong Market Food Court Allston

Yeah, I don't find any of the Chinatown places I go to be dirty, just very no-frills. The food court is definitely dirty, though, and smells kind of gross in areas. Restaurants themselves seem clean, though, and I've never gotten sick from eating there (and I have the saddest, most delicate stomach basically ever).

December 2011 Openings and Closings

Agreed. Amsterdam Falafel is so good. I would go often even if it were inconveniently located, but if it's right in Davis that would be fantastic.

Must haves from Blackstrap and Sweet Cheeks BBQ

The salt and pepper potatoes at Sweet Cheeks were amazing. Nothing else really stood out.

December 2011 Openings and Closings

Dosa Temple opened in Somerville last Friday. Has anyone been?

Compost bags?

They sell them at Tags in Porter Square.

Thanks for the warning about them. I'd just started using them and was wondering if they were going to break down. I might just fish them out and stop using them. Those corn-based utensils and cups are the same way, unfortunately.

Best Vegetable Dishes in Chinatown or Elsewhere?

That sounds great, thanks!

Best Vegetable Dishes in Chinatown or Elsewhere?

Oh, that sounds delicious. However, from Chicago I'm headed to Indiana, where I inevitably end up eating lots of fried foods (especially glorious breaded pork tenderloin), so I'll probably skip the salt & pepper fish this time. I'll definitely keep it in mind for future trips, though. Thanks!

Best Vegetable Dishes in Chinatown or Elsewhere?

I will be visiting Chicago from Boston next week and am looking for ideas for lunches on Monday and Tuesday. I was thinking of going to Chinatown at least one of those days, since it's convenient from where I'm staying and I've never been.

Other meals planned for this vacation are going to be heavy and meaty, so I'd like something with lots of vegetables (though not necessarily vegetarian). I'll be eating by myself and won't have a chance to eat leftovers, so a single dish that has both protein and vegetables would be ideal, though I'd be open to getting some dumplings or char siu bao (which I love) and a vegetable side. A roasted meat and vegetable rice plate might be ideal for avoiding leftovers.

I'm not yet a fan of kim chi and other fermented items (working on it) and I don't like potatoes or water spinach very much. Otherwise I'm pretty much open to anything. I love spicy food, eggplant, green beans, leafy greens, tofu, meats (not so much pig intestine or tripe, but I do like tendon).

I've searched the board and read lots of threads and was thinking maybe Double Li or Sun Wah or Lao Sze Chuan would be good, but specific dish recommendations would be great.

Thanks very much!

Basho?

Personally, I like Basho okay. The sushi is not great, but some of the non-sushi stuff is pretty good (especially their ohitashi, which is maybe the best I've ever had).

They do serve cocktails, but they are terrible. Really bad. Everything is super sweet and not at all balanced or tasty. I had forgotten how bad they are and made the mistake of ordering a whiskey smash there a few weeks ago (it was on the menu). No mint or lemon, just a tall glass of sugary bourbon. It tasted maybe like a bourbon and ginger ale with some simple syrup added. So gross. Stick with beer. Or maybe a gin and tonic or something similar. I think probably they could make that okay, but who knows.

Deep-fried hamburgers

That's a pity, because you were close to amazing sandwiches twice! Bloomington is fairly close to Indianapolis, which has tons of awesome BPTSs. And Cedar Rapids is pretty close to the one place I've had one in Iowa, Joensy's in Solon.

To bring this back on topic, when ASSBar first opened I had high hopes that they'd do a tenderloin sandwich, even just as an occasional special. As far as I know, they never have, though. It's a shame. We have giant pork tenderloins and tiny buns here. It's totally possible!

Deep-fried hamburgers

It's found in both Iowa and Indiana and not really anywhere else. And in both states it is one of the most delicious things in the universe.

Redbones' Hush Puppies Make Me Sad

What a great story. I will say, though the hushpuppies make me sad, the service always makes me extremely happy. They have incredibly friendly staff who consistently go the extra mile to make customers happy.

Redbones' Hush Puppies Make Me Sad

Huh... I wonder what happened.

I do love those corn fritters. I need to just start ordering those instead.

Redbones' Hush Puppies Make Me Sad

No! Are they always available? I was there recently and didn't notice them on the menu...

Redbones' Hush Puppies Make Me Sad

I always order them because I want them to be delicious, but they never are. Which is kind of odd to me, because I feel like they do a really good job with the fryer otherwise. The fries, onion rings, corn fritters, etc. are all great. Why the sad, dry, leaden balls of cornmeal, then?

Where can I find cheese making supplies (esp. pH strips)?

There's one on Mass Ave a few blocks towards Porter Sq. from Qingdao Garden.

Seeking good "bad" Chinese-American food in the inner western burbs (Belmont / Arlington / Lexington / Watertown / Waltham, maybe Cambridge and Somerville)

I recently went to Golden Temple for the second time and found it to be very bad. I liked it pretty well the first time, especially the general gao's chicken, but this time nothing was good and everything was expensive. Even the general gao's chicken was kind of gross. The sauce was over thickened to a sneezy consistency. We also got some sort of beef and onion dish (ordered beef udon, but that's not what we got) that was suuuper bland and an okay but nothing special green bean dish. I would definitely just go to a food court chinese place for chinese-american food next time rather than return to Golden Temple.

I think East Asia in Teele Sq. actually has the crispy fried noodles.

Kowloon-Awful!

That is certainly a possibility, but I won't ever go back to find out!

Kowloon-Awful!

Kowloon served me what was very likely the worst food I've ever eaten in a restaurant. I had very low expectations and actually really like americanized chinese food (even food court stuff), but this was just absolutely disgusting.

Green Street Grill, maybe the kitchen was having an off night?

That's exactly what I've found. The food is very hit or miss. The hits are really delicious, but there have only been a few lately. So now I just go for cocktails and yucca.

Have You Seen My Ideal Burger in Boston?

Washington Square Tavern used to have something very close, I think. It was definitely my favorite burger for quite a while. I don't think they had onion rings, and the burger would occasionally be a bit overcooked. But when it was done properly, it was pretty glorious. Definitely onion available and I think pickle (I don't eat them, so I can't really remember). Thin, crispy, delicious fries. They might've been frozen, but apparently that actually improve fries (http://aht.seriouseats.com/archives/2010/05/the-burger-lab-how-to-make-perfect-mcdonalds-style-french-fries.html).

However! The folks from WST have opened a new restaurant (The Abbey). So I have no idea whether the WST burger is any good anymore or whether The Abbey now has my favorite burger. I've been meaning to go investigate, but haven't had a chance yet.

Good luck in your quest. :)

Fresh Tortillas?

Ha! I appreciate that you didn't. :)

That's good to know. I'm looking for tortillas to use with homemade carnitas, carne asada, etc. I might just buy a tortilla press, but if not, it's good to know what other options there are!

Need a restaurant or a 2-go meal that will cheer me up

I would go to Rod Dee or Qingdao. The food is fantastic and the leftovers are delicious. Also the staff is super friendly at both places, which makes a big difference when you've had a bad week.

I hope next week is better!
