Must Eat In Astoria/Queens?

My faves in the neighborhod are Bahari, Arharn Thai, Rioja and El Bouqueron for Tapas. I am Italian so I generally do not go out for that, as it is way too easy to duplicate or better it in my kitchen. The Sushi from Osaka is fantastic, but I usually have it delivered as the house itself in nothing special.

We got a car. Where do we go?

I prefer Arharn Thai on 36th Ave in Astoria. The Thai community rates it quite a but higher than Sripraphai, and you almost never have the long wait that is standard there. The roasted duck with eggplant in red curry is FABULOUS

Best Butcher in boroughs, manhattan, or long island?

K&T Meats on Broadway in Astoria is terrific. AND, they were the location for the beef bourguignonne sequence from Julia & Julia. This butcher is the supplier for many of the area restaurants, they are always rolling in sides of meat during the day. Very fresh and the butchers have great suggestions if you are a novice cook.

New recommendations in Astoria

Bahari on Broadway is fabulous for Greek. It is my new "go-to Greek" since the closing of S'Agapo.

i would love anyone who is Italian and a picky foodie to weigh in on L'Incontro. It seems terribly pricey for the neighborhood and the blaring Bocelli music on the web site is a very bad sign for me! Caveat: I am Italian and am really picky about restaurant Italian. Il Nido is the standard, since I cook evening dinners at a better level than Becco in 30 minutes. Thanks!

what will make me move to Astoria

Everything on this board is a great reason to move to the 'hood. What's not to like? There are SOOO many terrific restaurants (besides those mentioned try Lil Bistro 33, Arharn Thai, 718, the original Jackson Hole, and Agnanti. I could keep going, but you'll figure it out!. Rent, though rising, is still a value, when you consider you are usually no more than 20 minutes tops from midtown. There is a total neighborhood vibe, people are friendly, and your local merchants will start calling you by name. For GREAT chinese take out, try Eastern Garden on 36th Ave near the N subway line. And for exercise, try the Olympic pool at Astoria park. or bike along the river till you eventually hit the water taxi beach for a brew and a view. Joey in Astoria blog is a great info source 9http://astorianyc.blogspot.com/) and http://www.astorians.com/community/in... is neighborhood central. If none of this is enough for you, you are likely not a fit for the 'hood!

REAL thai food

I LOVE Aharn. I have never had a bad meal there, and have decided to ask for the Thai menu for Thai people next time. The mussels are outstanding, as are the duck dishes and whole fish dishes.

UBC area suggestions

Hello:
I am in Vancouver at the end of June for a conference at UBC. I will be staying at UBC for convenience, but am a foodie from NYC.

Best options for food at UBC during the day?

I plan to see some of the city as well. Granville Island, Chinatown and downtown Vancouver recs are welcome. Moderate budget is the goal. And, best bar for martinis??
Thanks for your help!

Brick Cafe in Astoria - review

I find the food mediocre at best and the menu uninteresting. Love the ambiance, but "drinks only" for me. I'll try some small plates next time I stop in, to see if it's changed any recently

Kaufman Astoria studio area recommendations?

Many of my friends are actors who often work at Kaufman Astoria Studios. They are tired of the usual catered food. What would you suggest for a change near the studios? Unfortunately, Locale is only open for dinner!

Astoria

RE: wine: I live near the 36th Ave stop and now regularly use the wine store near there. The owners are very willing to order anything you particularly like.

Grand Wine and Liquors is terrific on the inventory but every time I ask for recommendations their suggestions miss the mark. I'm very specific about what I am looking for, as I was trained as a sommelier when I was in college. If you need a knowledgeable "wine guy/gal" you will likely have to use Manhattan.

High-end grocery in Astoria?

D&F on Broadway is fabulous. You no longer need Fairway or Zabars---you have Gary. He makes fresh mozzarella in the back several times a day---it is fabulous. Prices are good, service really friendly. The prepared foods are terrific--which is saying a lot for me, since I am Italian and am PICKY about la bella cucina. I have been known to stop at D&F for the starters when I am doing a last minute dinner party.

Address: D&F Italian Deli, 35-13 Broadway, Astoria, Queens, NY (35th and 36th Sts)
Hours: Open M-F 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sat 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sun 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Subway: N, W to Broadway; R, V, G to Steinway

Best place in Queens to buy raw, unshucked oysters?

Try Astoria Fishery Suppliers & Foods 37-10 33rd St, Long Island City, NY 11101 (718) 392-2680. They are predominantly suppliers for the area restaurants but they do a small walk in retail business.
