Looking for pomegranates

Yes, Safeway has them now ... 2 for $3 basically (try the one in Warm Springs, if you're in Fremont). Costco also sold bowls of the arils (Seeds).. 480grams or so for $6, separated into 2 containers. Trader Joe's also sells the seeds in bowls.

Gift for Culinary Student?

Not sure if I'm posting this on the right board, but my best friend recently started a culinary program and is finally pursuing his dreams after years in the high tech business. His birthday is coming up, and I wanted to get him a gift that's around $50.

I've given him lots of wines in the past and also given him a bacon of the month subscription, and I'll be taking him to dinner, too. Any ideas on culinary tools or food essentials that I can get him? Thanks!

Are Laduree macarons really special?

Many macarons (like at Angelinas) are too sweet or too rich, but I find the Laduree ones perfect - they have a slight hint of almond, and I like the mix of fillings, from jam to ganache. There are 17 or 18 flavors, and the place is amazingly cute for lunch outside or tea inside. My favorites were dark chocolate, pistachio, bergamot, and raspberry. They are pricey, though.

How long does Miso last?

Same here.. I figure there's enough sodium... as long as you don't double dip utensils or get other things in there (water, etc)

Asparagus cravings

Try the grilled asparagus at Via Matta. It has so many levels of flavor, the texture is perfect, it's not too oily, and it's probably my favorite in Boston!

Angela's Criticism

Everyone can have his/her own opinion about tastes, portions, service, and everything else, but I give you a lot of credit for daring to give your own honest review of a place that is so highly praised on this board. Don't get me wrong, I love the mole, but it's been a while since I've been back, so I don't know how things are now.

Ortolan

When we went, the chef personally came out to greet each table, as well. I enjoyed the tasting menu on a Thursday night - great service, perfect pace, innovative and well done dishes ... and we were lucky enough to find free street parking directly across the street!

Rolls/bread/spreads...the best

Petit Robert's warm french bread and the complimentary sweet/savory buttery rolls at Kingfish in Faneuil Hall. Plus the above mentioned ones like Union's cornbread, Sel de la Terre / L'Espalier (fig bread!), Oleana's spreads with the bread with zataar, anything at Scampo off the breads menu, Troquet's butter, Cafe Polonia's lard, Diva's garlic naan.... and if you get a chance, When Pigs Fly bakery

Boston summer eating

By the way, of the places you listed above, Blue Ginger (Wellsley is about a 30 min drive) is not bad for fusion, but you can find something similar in California (Chaya, Roy's, etc). Salts and Hungry Mother are more unique and intimate. Bin26 is a fun wine bar with a huge selection, but you're probably close enough to Napa... Petit Robert is OK for French bistro food.. I'd go just for the French bread trucked in from Montreal.

Boston summer eating

It's about an hour drive up North, but Chauncey Creek is fun for Lobsters by the water - very fresh, bring your own alcohol, salads, etc.. they have lobsters, clam chowder, and some other basic seafood. I'm originally from the bay area, too, and this is more of the "east coast" experience.. pretty different from clam chowder in a bread bowl at fisherman's wharf. There are also some other places in Maine worth checking out like When Pigs Fly bakery (chocolate bread, other interesting/random breads..). There's also a big candy store (Yummy's or something) and an outlet, but nothing compared to Gilroy...

Also for cocktails, check out Drink - the new place by Barbara Lynch in the fort Point channel area.. or Eastern Standard (maybe you can catch a game at Fenway after!)

Umami Burger: emperor's new clothes?

We weren't asked how we wanted our burgers cooked - it just came kind of glistening. I agree, I was very underwhelmed and originally had high hopes for the umami burger. It was an interesting combination with the tanginess of the tomato and the scent of the mushrooms, but I couldn't taste the cheese. I guess I had built up my expectations to expect a lot more. Maybe I would've enjoyed the burger more had it not been so hyped up. I also have yet to try the Father's Office burger..
