Tifton, GA -- dinner and breakfast

It's not a restaurant-but north of Tifton in Cordele, right off I75, check out Striplings General Store. They make their own sausage & jerky. It's like a slice of meat heaven.

Lodge factory store

Made the trip up I85 to the Lodge Cast Iron factory store in Commerce, GA this weekend. The staff was very helpful-they even told me when they were expecting a shipment. The factory in TN only offers tours once a year and inventory-including seconds-is divided evenly among their 4 stores. Prices are 20-50% off stores or Amazon. They had a good selection of seconds-the "defects" were marked, but in many cases are undetectable.(if anyone is interested in their new guitar skillet, it's a miniature novelty item- the right size for a spoon rest or ashtray-not a skillet) I bought prizes for my workplace chili cook-off and a 7 qt dutch oven for myself. It's worth the trip, but if you have a specific item in mind call ahead & staff can advise you on sales, seconds, etc. This stuff lasts forever, so I won't be a frequent shopper. Very Cool Place!

Best pan for deep frying?

Thanks, I'll try the dutch oven. Between the braising and the frying, I don't know if it will ever leave the stove. Pans that perform many tasks well & last a long time are a pleasure to use.

Best pan for deep frying?

Thanks for the ideas, the chicken looks yummy. I spotted an old wok ring in the basement-just need a wok. Also planning a trip to the Lodge factory in TN this fall, so I probably won't purchase anything before that. I have some Le Creuset- a 31/2 qt casserole & 5 qt oval. I use both of them a lot & would be afraid frying like that might damage the finish.

Best pan for deep frying?

I use a 5 qt stainless steel saute pan (1980's Macys brand with a heavy aluminum bottom) for deep frying chicken, fish, et al. I've used this pan a couple of times a week for over 20 yrs-we fry a lot in the south. The pan is showing wear & I'm considering a replacement. I don't know if stainless is the best choice for this-it just seemed to be the best choice of the pans I had on hand. Any suggestions?

Stand mixer recommendations?

I bought a refurbished Kitchenaid from http://www.kitchencollection.com, comes with 1 yr warranty and the best prices. Backordered items are usually available within a couple weeks. It's refurbished, I called the manufacturer, & they were very helpful & explained that most of these mixers were returned to the store as unwanted gifts, wrong color, etc. Mine appeared to be brand new & I couldn't find any flaws. It's a 5 qt Artisan. I use it a lot more than I thought would. It works well with smaller batches of light doughs like pizza, pasta, etc. Better knead larger batches of stiffer doughs by hand, as heavier doughs strain the motor.

All Clad is 40% Off at my local cookware store -- Should I get it?

I agree, it's only a good deal if you need it & will use it regularly. W/S has a 2 piece french skillet (9" & 11") on sale today for $99. I bought the set last night after years of frustration with Calphalon omelette pans that food would adhere to in a fairly thick layer despite many experiments w/ cleaners, preheating, & oils of varying types & amounts. I just finished making potatoes & eggs in the new all-clad & it was a joy--even cooking & nothing stuck to the pan. Made in USA w/ lifetime warranty makes it that much sweeter.

Looking for great coffee maker

I have a Capresso 440. The stainless carafe is great--the coffee stays HOT for 3-4 hours and tastes better than any of the drip makers we have tried. It has a feature for brewing a 1/2 pot and time brew. I saw one recently at Tuesday Morning for $99.
