Vegetarian or vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Calgary

Thanks everyone, the recommendations are much appreciated!

Vegetarian or vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Calgary

A group of us are heading down to Calgary in a few weeks. Three of them are vegetarian, and I'd like to find some good vegatarian or vegetarian-friendly places to take them to. Anything close to the BMO Centre downtown - whether it's a cafe, bistro, sit-down restaurant, etc... - would be especially useful. Thanks!

Edmonton Restaurant for Out of Town Guests

I don't think we're going to end up doing East-Indian tonight, but I MUST try that out. Thanks!

Edmonton Restaurant for Out of Town Guests

I have, but apparently they've been there before quite a few times.

I just learned that they wanted to go somewhere with a good wine selection, so that narrows down my options again. (I'm not a wine-drinker either so I don't have a lot of knowledge of places that'd be interesting in that regard)

Edmonton Restaurant for Out of Town Guests

Is Lingnan the restaurant that was profiled on a television show?

One option I was thinking of would be either Sai Woo or the Southside Pagolac (mainly for the novelty of eating Vietnamese surrounded by steak-house decor, although I do like their food) but that's a thought.

Edmonton Restaurant for Out of Town Guests

I have a few out of town guests here who want to try something new tonight. Last time we tried (and liked - the service was great, which was a relief after I'd heard people complaining about poor servers) the Wild Rose, and they've been to Skinny Legs and Cowgirls. I'm not really in the mood for the Blue Pear and was looking at something slightly cheaper anyhow.

Any suggestions? I was looking at Kai on Jasper and 109th but my brother says it's mediocre and the service is lousy. My brother's suggesting Bristro Praha, but has it reopened in a new location? If they're in the mood for East Indian I was thinking Origin India on Whyte (someone here recommended it for my birthday - belated thanks for that!) although I know some people swear on some Southside eateries although I don't know very many out there.

Weekend Dining in Calgary

When I say weekend I mean Saturday morning to Monday afternoon. Any good must-try places in Calgary? Perferably, but not necessarily, anything asian. Thai, Chinese, Japanese, etc...

Sadly I'm going with a group of friends who probably won't be up for fine dining, so something where we can attend dressed casually would be preferred.

Need help picking East-Indian eatery in Edmonton for my birthday

Thanks! It looks like we're going for Origin India on Whyte. (I'll have to try Maurya some other time, that also looks tempting)

Need help picking East-Indian eatery in Edmonton for my birthday

My family's taking me out to dinner for my birthday this Saturday and I'd like to visit an East Indian restaurant. My range of East-Indian restaurants in the past few years has pretty much been Dawaat, New Asian Village, Khazana's and Hawelli. I'd be interested in someplace new, if there are any East-Indian gems I've missed (which is very possible).

Since it's a birthday, I wouldn't mind a fancier-looking place. I'd prefer something central or in the west end if possible too, but that's not absolutely necessary.

Thanks for any advice. I have those restaurants mentioned above as fall-backs but I wouldn't mind someplace new!

Recent resto closures - Edmonton

I don't know if it's been mentioned before but Sanku over on Stony Plain is gone. I was heartbroken - along with Mikado's downtown and Ichiban on 149th, they were the only Japanese restaurant I really frequented. (I loved their Tuna Dice! And their house salad!) There's another Japanese restaurant there now, I forget the name Has anyone tried it?

The downtown Sankyu is still there, I think, but I've never visited that location. Are they any good?

Edmonton - Tropika Barely Mediocre

I've had mediocre experiences there as well. The only dishes I really like at tropica are their house chicken and their lamb satay. (They also will bring you a coconut juice from a fresh-cut young coconut - I'll give them that, it's refreshing).

I was considering going to the West-end tropica today in order to try their Hainanese chicken, because I've never had Hainanese chicken, but I'm sort of glad I passed and visited Smokey Joe's instead.

Skinny Legs and Cowgirl in Edmonton

My brother is having a dinner party at Skinny Legs and Cowgirl - should I give it a whirl? I'd have to make some time for it and I've never been. Any impressions? Also, what's their price range?

Chopped Liver in Edmonton or Calgary?

Hi Teejay - I thought I remembered that The Continental Treat over on Whyte Ave does liver and onions and yup, although according to their website's menu they serve liver, sausage and onion on a bed of noodles. I'm not sure if this is quite what you're going for, but I thought I would mention it.

Good asian takeout in Far-South Edmonton

Sadly it's too late today (I found Good Buddy, which wasn't bad, although I was disappointed were out of BBQ duck) but I'm probably headed back there later this week. I'll check it out, thanks!

Good asian takeout in Far-South Edmonton

I'm house-sitting for a night for a friend in one of the Southernmost communities in Edmonton, down 111th street and a few blocks past the crossover with Anthony Henday. There's not a lot of food in the house and I've never been to this area before, so if anyone could recommend some nearby asian takeaway I'd be grateful. Anything I shouldn't miss while I'm down here?

Best chinese resturants in Edmonton

I was just going to ask about the exclusion of Sai Woo as well - I don't get out there nearly enough but I know a man from Vancouver who visits every time he comes here and declares that he hasn't found anything to compare on BCs coast. He may be exaggerating but it's still quite a tasty place.

Edit: I liked Cha for Tea's Dim Sum menu the one time I went alone on a weekday, but their "regular dishes" looked quite pricey to my eyes. I haven't been out for Chinese for a few months but it looked about $3-4 more expensive than most Chinese restaurants of the same quality.

I'm an omnivore and all but the words on that window are creeping me right out. Bleh. If you weren't praising the place, I'd pass right on by.

Anyone else been to the new Wildflower Grill in Edmonton?

My parents and a couple visiting from Germany went to the Wildflower the other night. My dad says it was "fine", but that it wasn't a busy night. He's been there a few times for business lunches as he works in the area, and he says it's not a bad place but he finds it a tad pricey.

Edmonton Restaurants

I'm sorry to hear you had troubles with the wine and the server. I always get either the iced coffee or plain old water there, so I can't say if they've improved or not. I don't even think I've even seen tempura tuna or anything even like it on their menu, so they must have changed it around quite a bit indeed.

Edmonton Restaurants

If we're talking about Vietnamese restaurants, I'm surprised I never see the Lemongrass Cafe on the list. I hadn't heard about it until a friend moved nearby, but it's quite a nice little place that seems to be Vietnamese with a few Thai flavours and dishes. (My favorite has to be their chicken and mango red curry)

Thai food in Edmonton

Thanks for the heads up. Wish these places weren't so far away from where I live but them's the breaks.

Boualong is definitely worth a shot - lovely people running it, and delicious dishes.

Food shopping in Edmonton

>>Chinese bakery - in Chinatown try the Garden Bakery, Hong Kong Bakery, or the little one next to Sai Woo Restaurant (sorry can't remember the name).

That little one next to Sai Woo was the Golden River bakery, and sadly it seems to have closed down. I went past there about a month ago and the store had been gutted, with no "under renovations" or "moved to a different location" sign so I have to assume it's gone.

It's a shame. They were one of my favorite bakeries. I'll have to see how the Hong Kong Bakery and Garden Bakery compare.

Food shopping in Edmonton

Their bread is all right, but I admit I have a weakness for their danishes. We had someone over from Cyprus and they were the only baked thing she was really impressed with while she was here.

I tried their cheesecake and their flourless chocolate cake this summer. They weren't bad. It's also a good store to pick up little luxury, "I know these are overpriced but I feel like splurging" goods like coffee-caramel spreads or fruit-flavored salsas or those Dippsea-chick dips.

Suggestions for dining out on a birthday in Edmonton

Glad to hear that you had a good time at Dawat's. I'll have to try it with some friends.

One place that I completely forgot about that I may try is the Continental Treat. I haven't been there in 4 years and never for dinner, but I remember enjoying lunch there.

Was Polos that place by the university, near the defunct Cafe Terra on around 113, 114th street?

Suggestions for dining out on a birthday in Edmonton

I grabbed a selection of appetizers from Wild Tangerine once about two years back and I wasn't really overly impressed. It's a little harsh to judge a restaurant without trying its main courses but I just never go by that place and forgot about it.

Does Asian Grill House do a Shabu Shabu style soup-hotpot? I've been looking for a place that does after Tokyo Palace closed down. (My parents loved doing that)

>>I have given up on the new grills/fusion that have opened up in the past few years. They seem to be more about trendy decor and cocktail lists than food.

Exactly. I concur about OPM. I can barely remember what I ate there in fact.

>>In this city right now, it is pretty much either asian (including Indian) or high-end. Have you thought about Indian? Dawat is quite good - at least the south side one (34 ave), am trying Whyte Ave one tonight, hopefully it is as good. Or Haweli (downtown).

It's funny you mention East Indian, I was thinking of either New Asian Village or Khazana (I'd forgotten about Haweli!) but my father just can't eat anything even remotely spicy. I suppose we could get them to tone down the dishes but I think it would be easier to go someplace else for now.

Where's Dawat on Whyte Ave? I've always thought it would be good to have an Indian place on the main drag itself. (I know there's one beside movie studio and another a few blocks north around 80th ave and 104 street but I've never been)

Suggestions for dining out on a birthday in Edmonton

My family's taking me out to dinner this Saturday and have asked me where I want to go. I'm a little undecided. I was considering Pad Thai on Whyte Ave or Sankyu or maybe the Golden Rice Bowl (their Dim Sum is delicious but I've never been there for dinner) but I usually go out for Asian cuisine on my birthday and I feel like something different. I was thinking of going to a grill, but I'm not really familiar with many in Edmonton and there seem to be an awful lot of higher-priced grills/grill-and-fusion places that have opened up in the past two or three years (OPM, Moxie's, East Meets West, etc...come to mind. I've been to all of them once. I thought the bill at EMW's was a bit too much for what they served us and wouldn't return. A couple of friends like The Keg but I've never been there, and I hear it's always packed).

What grills are over-priced and what aren't? Any suggestions would be welcome.

Edmonton Butchers & Greengrocers (moved from Canada board)

My local IGA (Andy's IGA on 142 street) has a butcher behind the pre-wrapped meats counter who will gladly carve you a custom cut of meat and can usually tell you where it comes from. They used to do special orders as well, but I'm not sure if they do anymore. They'd be about 10-15 minutes away by car, depending on where you live downtown. Hope that helps.

Whoops. Replied to the wrong post.
