Southern style fried catfish in Toronto/gta

Harlem has it on their menu. Personally I love Fried Catfish as well, but was not impressed by Harlem's version (nor anything else I tried on their menu) With that being said Harlem has many fans on the board, so that is just my opinion.

Nucleo Sportinguista - Somerville

Great roundup itaunas, sounds like a perfect fit to watch a match. If I do check it out, will be sure to report back with what I eat.

Ethnic and Cultural Festivals Summer/Fall 2012

Great post, looking forward to festival season.

Yes it is 8/25. http://www.bostoncarnival.org/
Also Cambridge Carnival in Kendall Square is 9/9.

Nucleo Sportinguista - Somerville

Was wondering if anyone (itaunas?) has tried the food here. I am mapping out some places to watch Euro 12 matches this month and was curious about the food.

Thanks!

Recommendations near Boston Marriott Copley Place/ Hynes Convention Center in July

Welcome to Boston BBVL. I enjoy reading your posts on the FL board when I am researching my trips to Central Florida to visit family. I also lived in C. FLA for a while myself, so know what is lacking in Orlando. I would explore the following neighborhoods:

- Chinatown: A search of the board will yield some great options. My personal favorites are Dumpling Cafe, Peach Farm, Vinh Sun BBQ, Best Little Restaurant and New Shanghai. I would definitely agree to stay away from the Vietnamese options, because Orlando's Viet is so much better.

- East Cambridge: There is a ton of Brazilian available in C. FLA, but no Portuguese as far as I remember. Casa Portugal, Portugalia and the Snack Bar are all worth a visit. Also in East Cambridge is Courthouse Seafood, where you can get great Fried whole belly clams, smelts and basically anything available in the adjoining Fish Market. One more option in the area is The Helmand for excellent Afghani.

- Allston: Arguably the best cheap eats neighborhood in Boston. Once again a board search will yield numerous options. To look out for though: Yoma (Burmese), Bon Chon (Korean Fried Chicken), S&I Thai, Super 88 Food court (Chinese Food Court), Azama Grill (Egyptian), Ariana (Afghani) and Darbar (Pakistani)

I am sure others will add further options, but that should get you started. Also keep in mind that Chinatown is reasonable walking distance, but the other two are easily accessible by T (Metro)

Best cafe mocha in Boston area?

My favorites are RJ Gourmet and Area Four. RJ Gourmet gets the nod though because the Mexican Mocha is excellent.

Redbones Food Truck

That Jerk Beef is really good. Is it on the truck menu?

May 2012 Openings and Closings

I loved Bina under the original Chef, but once he left and they took some of the best dishes off the menu it went way downhill. Not surprising they didnt last.

Beantown Taqueria

Jalisco is still better overall I would say, mainly because their meat selection is better and probably better executed than any other Taquería I've tried in the area. Beantown's Tortillas are better than Jalisco though.

Beantown Taqueria

I wish they would eventually expand their meat selections as well. Personally my favorite is always Lengua and Cabeza, but the Chorizo and Tinga make me more than happy when they are in those excellent tortillas.

Orlando area top 10 - February 2012

We ate at the Rusty Spoon last month on a visit to Orlando and though it was great. I still would not put it over the Ravenous Pig, but from our one visit Rusty Spoon is pretty damn close.

Beantown Taqueria

After two tries I can convincingly say I really like this place. Admittedly the name and Central Square location did not inspire much confidence but this is amongst the better Taqueria's I have tried in the Boston area.

Have ordered every type of Taco on the menu with the Chorizo and Tinga being the standouts. The Carnitas is probably the only one that fell short and is just okay. The main highlight though are the Tortillas. Hand Made in house Corn Tortillas that are good by anyone's standard.

For someone that lives in Kendall Square I also appreciate the fact that they are open late and deliver to the area.

Early Morning Boston

A few breakfast options walking distance from Beacon Hill that open at 8am on a Saturday.

- Tatte Bakery and Cafe in Kendall Square
- The Paramount in Beacon Hill
- Mike and Patty's in Bay Village

I've never been to Brasserie Jo for breakfast, so maybe someone else can chime in on that option.

The Chinatown walking/eating tour sounds like a good way to spend the time afterwards.

May 2012 Openings and Closings

I noticed Voltage had some Sample Macaroons from Tatte on display the day they opened, so that could happen.

I've been to Tatte twice since opening. One evening picked up two Tarts, 1 Pistachio and Cherry the other Pear. Both were very good, especially the Pear. Next morning stopped for an espresso and Croissant on my way to the T. The Croissant was one of the better ones Ive had in the area.

Lorenz Island Kuisine

That is impressive. I completely missed MC Slim JB's note on the Patties. Feel like I've missed out just viewing this place as a Breakfast spot, need to visit to try out the Patties and hopefully some dinner items.

Lorenz Island Kuisine

Nab, did you happen to ask where they get their patties from by any chance? or do they make them in house? From your picture they look like exactly the type of patty I love eating, thin pastry and a healthy portion of meat. For a Toronto reference they look almost exactly like a Michidean Patty.

Toronto Hound Coming For 2 Weeks

radiopolitic, I know this is a shot in the dark, but is the restaurant you worked at Asitane by any chance?

Lorenz Island Kuisine

Thanks for the report Nab!

Toronto Hound Coming For 2 Weeks

Wanted to add a couple more that came to mind. You could try some Puerto Rican, Haitian or Cape Verdean food as well, since as far as I can remember none are available in Toronto (or at least difficult to find)

Puerto Rican- Cafe Latino (Government Center)
Haitian: Camie's (Central Square, Cambridge)
Cape Verdean: Restaurante Cesaria (Dorchester)

Toronto Hound Coming For 2 Weeks

Hey Radiopolitic another former Toronto resident in Boston here. Great list so far, would add a few more for you to check out:

- S&I Thai in Allston
- Oleana in Cambridge an unique take on Eastern Mediterranean
- Istanbul'lu in Somerville for great Turkish.
- The bar at Clio for cocktails. Todd Maul runs an incredible bar program and its more of a quiet setting than the others on your list (which are all great as well)
- Voltage Coffee in Kendall Square is another to add to your coffee list.

May 2012 Openings and Closings

Heng Lay - Lowell

A Cambodian friend of mine took a few of us up to Lowell a couple weeks back to eat at Heng Lay. Really enjoyed our meal.

Started off with Papaya Salad with a side of Fried Chicken. Papaya Salad was excellent with a perfect mix of tangy and sweet. The Chicken was fried perfectly crispy as well.

Prahok with Scrambled Eggs was also very good. Nice strong flavor and paired well with the Side of Veggies especially the tomatillos.

The Chicken Curry was incredible and by far our favorite dish of the night. Awesome curry with a strong coconut milk flavor that I love. Huge portion as well that we had no issues finishing.

Next was the Hot Pot. Great broth with once again a pronounced coconut and curry flavor. We had Tripe, Quail Eggs, Shrimp, Beef and Vegetables served for the Hot Pot. All of which were great.

Finished off with a drink made of Condensed Milk, Carbonated Water and Egg. Great way to finish the meal.

I did not notice any reviews on CHOW of this restaurant and definitely believe it is worthy of a visit if in Lowell. The owners were wonderful as well, great people and great food. I will definitely return.

Fresh Breadfruit

Tropical Foods in Dudley has it. Call ahead of time to confirm which day they get their delivery though.

Lunch Spot - Today (Saturday)

Saturday lunch options are somewhat limited for what you are looking for, but there are a few good options.

In boston: Eastern Standard, Scampo, Bistro Du Midi, Parish Cafe or Neptune Oyster (If you stick to the Burger or Lobster Roll for $25) The Asian recommendations from Cambridgedoctpr are also good.

In brookline: Cognac Bistro.

please share your recommendations for Negril, Jamaica

I second the Sweet Spice recommendation. Also I would include 3 Dives Restaurant, Sonia's for incredible Jamaican baked goods, Janice's restaurant for a traditional Jamaican breakfast as well is a must. Enjoy your stay!

Cocktails and Dinner after Magic Game Friday

After the Magic game we ended up at Rusty Spoon. Great meal overall.

My wife had the Burger which was cooked perfectly medium rare, the shoe string fries were also excellent. I ordered the "Dirty South" with Local Snapper, Shrimp and Clams. This honestly was one of the best dishes I have had this year so far. Everything was cooked perfectly and the Fish and Seafood were incredibly fresh. The broth had so many layers over flavor as well.

Only one complaint was the bartending. I asked for an Old Fashioned with No fruit and got a puzzled look, but they made a good effort at the drink. It ended up in a cocktail glass and was solid, but not what I expected. Really minor complaint though as it was an incredible meal.

Afterwards we ended up at the Desert Lady and ordered the Warm Pecan Pie. Once again really good, sweet but not overly sugary, just a great ending to the evening.

I am impressed at how far Church Street has come in the years since I lived in Orlando, looks like a blossoming local restaurant scene which I cant wait to explore further next visit.

Peri Peri Chicken

Nice roundup as usual itaunas. I have tried the frango at Snack Bar a few times and enjoy it, only one complaint is that when you do not ask for extra sauce it comes a bit dry, but when you specify extra sauce it is a great chicken.

I would be interested to hear your impressions as I have not tried the frango no churrasco at any of the other local restaurants (I typically order other dishes), so my point of reference is what I used to eat in Toronto when I lived there.
