We always make a point of eating breakfast at Colonial House. They do it right.

good food along I 80

That can be a pretty grim route. We found very little in Wyoming or Nebraska without some serious detours. Not too far off l-80 in Iowa is The Farmer's Kitchen, in Atlantic. Atlantic is south of the interstate, but worth the extra drive.

I should add neither Vietnam Cafe or Pho 97 have buffets.

Vietnamese buffet in KC?

How big is your group? Vietnam Cafe in Columbus Park has a table that seats at least eight. They are very accomadating about putting tables together for big parties. The food is very good and the service is good, too. Pho 97 on Independence Blvd at Prospect puts together large tables, too. I've seen parties of 20 all eating together. Very good food as well.

Sanctuaria, St. Louis

Thanks for the info and opinions. It sounds like somewhere we would like. What I meant by the hipness factor was often the food doesn't quite catch up to the atmosphere. Their website is very, well hip. That's the only word I could think of . You know, lots of tattoos, calling their tapas "wild tapas. That sort of thing. No problem with that at all, as long as the food is as good as the website is cool. Thanks for the recommendation, we're looking forward to it!

Can anyone ring in on Sanctuaria? The menu looks good, but the hipness factor is scaring me.

Where are some decent lunch places in this area? Have to be here for business for 3 weeks. Dinner recommendations would be welcome, too. Dinner can be Buena Park, Fountain Valley, Westminster, Garden Grove and any of the beach areas. Love Vietnamese, Mexican, Korean and Middle Eastern. Thanks!

We had several terrific meals at Colonial House in Rapid City. The service was as terrific as the breakfast. It's on Rushmore Rd, right before Cathedral Drive if going towards Keystone.

KC and OP(KS) for Lunch

I apologize for seeming rude. That was not my intention. As I stated above, my post was simply to clarify the spelling and location of a good recommendation for the benefit of the original poster. No ill will was intended. I also was erroneous in stating Cinzetti's was a chain. It was my understanding there were more than two units. Apparently only Colorado and here. I stand corrected and I don't think anyone is being rude to correct me.

I'm sure seacatte will have a great time and have some great food. A stop at BoLing's on the Plaza for Dim Sum would be worth considering.

KC and OP(KS) for Lunch

I certainly didn't mean to be unwelcoming to anyone. But if someone not from this area is asking for recommendations, perhaps the places recommended should be accurate in location and spelling. The poster also requested that no chain were desired . Cinzetti's is a chain. I wasn't trying to be "hardcore." Just trying to save the original poster some trouble with confusing and inaccurate information.

KC and OP(KS) for Lunch

It's Lidia's with an I, not a Y and it's in the Crossroads, not the River Market.
The poster asked for no chains, Cinzetti's Italian Buffet is a chain.

KC and OP(KS) for Lunch

One Bite Japanese Grill at 132nd and Antioch, in Overland Park, is delightful.
Blanc Burgers and Bottles, 2 locations, one on Westport Rd. in midtown, and a newer branch at 107th and Mission, in Leawood.
I also like Habashi House in the City Market, Downtown KC for shwarma, and excellent falafel.

modesto st. louis

We love Atlas, so that is a definite. Our daughter and boyfriend are visiting from Seattle, they are beer drinkers. They are interested in the Schlafly Taproom. They've had Schlafly beer in the past and liked it quite a bit, so we will go there. I was once a chef at a restaurant that had Middle Eastern/Persian food and have enjoyed Cafe Natasha before. That's on our list.
We've done Hill Italian to death, don't need anymore toasted ravioli. If we have time,Trattoria Marcella is a possibility. Our daughter has fond memories of Pho Grand and would like to have lunch there, as well as La Tropicana. Bailey's Chocolate Bar for dessert and maybe Square One for more beer. It's a very ambitious list for a short time.
Oh, Goody Goody Diner, too. We love that place.

Thanks guys.
I'd forgotten about Sauce. That's a great site.
I was hoping Modesto might be a little more like Solera in MSP than La Bodega in KC, but it sounds good. I'll report back. Thanks again.

Did a search for Modesto on the Hill, but nothing definite came up. Any current information?
We have most of our dining already scheduled for our upcoming trip to St. Louis, but have a few open slots. We were thinking about trying Modesto. Would love some opinions....

Jack Stack in Kansas City?

I don't really mean "clean" as in clean surroundings or as in passing the Health Department codes. That is certainly a plus! Actually the last time I was in LC's and Jackstacks, both appeared to be passing the code.

What I mean is JackStack tastes somewhat one dimensional. Very clean taste, but not at all complex.

KCMO- Cupcake ala Mode

In the food world I work in cupcakes aren't on their way out at all. I make tons and tons of cupcakes, mini, medium and large. People don't seem to be tired of them yet.

Cupcake ala Mode is excellent. Haven't been to Babycakes.

Jack Stack in Kansas City?

I love LC's. The food is superior. The people who work there can be mean, but I don't care. The food is worth it.

The people at JackStack are very nice. It is the cleanest bbq you will ever have, which to me isn't necessarily a plus.

KCMO- Indian Grocery

The last place I bought fresh curry leaves was at Global Foods, in Kirkwood, MO. That isn't much help!. They last about 6 months in the freezer with no flavor loss. After that, they get a little subtle.

India Emporium didn't have them 2 weeks ago. Maybe I'm just hitting them at the wrong time. I didn't try Ambica.

I usually just make my own garam masala, but we used Spice Hunter were I worked because it was readily available at the grocery store we used. It is excellent, but pricey.

KCMO- Indian Grocery

I haven't been able to find fresh curry leaves for a while. When I can find them, I buy lots and freeze them. That works quite well.

My favorite place for South Asian groceries is India Emporium at 105th and Metcalf, close t o Marty. I've been to Ambica and the chaat place at 149th. Both of those places are good, but I always go back to India Emporium.

Has anyone eaten at La Tropicana lately? The last time I was there, a number of years ago, it was quite good. They had a very small seating area. Has that grown any?

Jfood's first (and second) Juicy Lucy - Matts Bar (MSP)

It's "jucy lucy" isn't it? Not "juicy lucy" ? Did I miss something?
My daughter who lived in Minneapolis for 8 years was partial to Matt's.
She loved the Nook, too, but not for their Jucy Lucy.

KCMO- Cancun Fiesta Fresh

We were there on a slow Sunday night. After receiving our food without the usual carrots, etc, I asked about it and was told "we're out." They should have told us that when we ordered, actually. The cabeza and pork in the tacos tasted fine, but I agree, it wasn't the same without the other stuff. I'll go back because when it's good, it's really good! And it's 4 minutes from my home :-)

KCMO- Cancun Fiesta Fresh

Haven't found a reason to eat anything other than the street tacos. Standing in line and seeing the other stuff didn't move me to order anything other than cabeza or lengua. All the other food looked gringo ordinary. Actually, 2 weeks ago, we got an assortment of street tacos and they were only ok. No carrots, no radishes, just meat and tortillas. Sort of disappointing.
