Lamb shoulder

Or you can go to Jordan Market on Westwood Blvd where they sell the whole lamb shoulder (will cut it up) - they also have lamb kidneys.

Maude in Beverly Hills. Any early reports?

Went for our Anniversary dinner at the beginning of February. High end yes, satisfying no - the small bites doth not make a whole dinner and while we didn't leave hungry, no attention was given to the fact that it WAS our anniversary or that I specified that I was allergic to grapefruit (it was the citrus dinner). Couldn't see the table or the food - needed more light and the constant change of cutlery and china was wearing. That said, interesting evening but asked the waitperson where in Northern England Grandma came from and was told the Chef would be over to tell us. Didn't happen. Maybe back for the peas performance.

Curtis Stone Gets Killer Early Reviews for Maude

Mme Zoe and I went to Maudes a few weeks ago for the Citrus themed dinner. Good service but a mass of new plates and cutlery at every turn - nice touch but a lot of coming and going. Asked the waitperson where the Chef's grandmother came from in "the North of England" and he said, oh the Chef will come and tell you: didn't happen. Let down but on to the food:
I told the reservation person that I was allergic to grapefruit and that this was an anniversary dinner - neither noted, in fact when the multi citrus something was the next course, I had to point out to waitperson, no grapefuit. All food delicious but need more than one bite at a time so I guess this is not for us for a repeat.

PIE - LA Dish of the Month (March 2014)

Maria's on Pico is our hangout before we go over to the Landmark for a movie: they serve warm apple pie for four in a big soup bowl, four spoons. The crust is criss cross sugar twirled and the filling is not too sweet well flavored and very apple-y. Topped with a really large blob of vanilla icecream and four very happy people dived in. Mme Zoe is the pie queen and this met with her approval.

best ceviche in town?

Best cerviche (Peruvian style) is at El Paron on Beverly Blvd near Atlantic with a head on view of the metro rail. Call ahead because this stuff is FRESH made, so theres a wait. Fish is divine, big chunks, with a pitcher of the broth on the side to keep things going. I think a serving is about $12. They also have heart anticuchos (sp) which are incredible.
Low on atmorphere, high on quality and service.

Las Casuelas vs. El Jefe in Palm Springs?

Mme Zoe and I like Johnny Costas down near the end of Palm Canyon Drive - superior food. I think that Las casuelas is loud, crowded and not very good food but we have friends who DO and eat there weekly. Never t ried El Jefe.

LA Hound Potluck get together, before the next holiday ? anyone down ?

The proverbial commitment needs to be set: ie where we are going, time etc and the biggie: prepay or pay at the door. Mindful of a doings ten years ago at an Indonesian restaurant where the organizers got stuck with people eating but not paying. Needs to be settled before the event somehow so that doesn't happen.

Best Cobb Salad? Where?

Always seeking a good Cobb because that is high on Mme Zoe's list of favorite lunches - can recommend the Cobb at Norms on Pico in West LA. Big big serving, enough for two, plenty of chicken, bacon, and the rest with a dynamite dressing loaded with Blu Cheese. $8.95 is the price. Glory glory.

Remember these Restaurants?

Frascatis on Wilshire in Beverly Hills and other locations too. They had a great tiramasu dessert plus really tasty food and a great vibe with lots of regulars.

Remember these Restaurants?

The steaks were $2.95 in 1959:) Edna's son was a very successful real estate developer and he sent his Rolls to pick up Edna's two white dogs for their weekly grooming.

The Kula place downtown was lots of fun at lunch, pretty good sushi and great service - must be popular because there was a LONG line at the door. Took our LA Times coupon too:)

scallops for lunch

Palomino in Westwood has the most delicious scallop dish - dipped in asiago and lightly fried; I had it served with broccolini rather than rice - this is on the dinner menu - not sure if its available for lunch but worth the drive, that good.

What's your favorite restaurant?

I took Chowpup to L'Orangerie for his 21st birthday years ago and he has never forgotten that special dinner/event - the egg with the top off and caviar in there somewhere (wish I could remember the name of the dish) was something dreams are made of.

SALADS - LA Dish of the Month (August 2013)

The Rose salad at Soleil on Westwood Blvd is a whole head of butter lettuce frilled on a plate with a really delicious vinaigrette dressing; then the best or among the best Cobb is at Norm's on Pico - lots of everything and a rich bleu cheese dressing - good for two its that big.
