Has anyone else had decreased smell and taste?

Since going thru menopause, I've had decreased smell and taste. I never smoked: I've had sinus & allergy problems. Any suggestions in enhancing the smell & taste I do have? Any good foods? I do a lot of garlic.

Detroit in November

Polish Village in Hamtramck.
Eastern Market-even in November, walking around the market on a Saturday is foodie fun.

I love the Vietnamese restaurants in Madison Heights: but, I am partial to good Asian.

DTW restaurant emphasizing healthful choices

How fancy or non-fancy? My goodness, any of the Vietnamese restaurants on John R or Dequindre in Madison Heights would give you strong good quality Pho....just check Yelp for how many Vietnamese places there are. My favorite is Than Long at 11 mile & John R.

What to do with old dried morels (DTW)?

The bags were full of holes-but, if they were created by bugs or just worse for wear is beyond me. I have stored the morels in new bags, in the freezer section of a unused refrigerator, since I changed their bags-so, they are nice and in the dark, and cool. As I mentioned above, they were part of someone's business that went south-however, I don't know how long ago that person's business went under. The one {fresh) mushroom guy who also looked at them wasn't too positive on their use, either. I do know about bugs in stuff-that doesn't bother me: the rash on my thighs that hurt after I ate the morels the first time is what bothers me more.

What to do with old dried morels (DTW)?

I kinda thought so, that the bugs "killed the golden goose." That's why I'll compost them-if any spores survive, I could get morels growing in my area. Thanks, everyone--they were a freebee, anyway. (What I feel bad about is the divorced couple-the little research I did about their former mushroom company is that it was fairly successful until the recession killed it. I just hope the morels were either their own pickings, or a wholesale lot they could afford to ignore.}

What to do with old dried morels (DTW)?

Okay. When I went thru the morels, they had some bugs....about five to seven. They were stored in the basement of a house of a couple who did have a fresh and dried mushroom business for a while. The mushrooms may have been picked fresh in Michigan. However, they were stored in plastic bags that were....worse for wear, and the bags were in a large unsecured cardboard box. I threw out about what may have been a pound or so of what could have been called "morel dust." (Just so you know-I got these are part of what I call and estate clean out-the divorcing couple just wanted out of their house-I got a heck of a lot more good groceries and kitchen items from that estate than just the morels.) I only thought of burying them because Will, a chef & local sausage maker locally in the Detroit area said they were garbage.

What to do with old dried morels (DTW)?

I have inherited about 3 pounds (!) of old dried morels. I don't really know how old they are-at least 3-5 years old by my estimate. Also, I am one of the unfortunate few who has a bad allergic reaction to them.

Are they now just expensive compost? A chef friend says yes. Before I bury them, I just want to make sure.

Where can I order blood from?

Making kiska? Try Eastern Market-central market, if in Detroit. Man, I had the best czanina with fresh duck blood, when there was a poultry slaughter house on Shoenherr and 7 mile....(czanina is a sweet & sour docks blood soup, for those who don't know.

Oh--I just remembered-Filipino grocery stores also usually have frozen blood-pork, mostly.

Steve's Backroom - DTW - on Jefferson

I used to love this place, when it really was a backroom-this restaurant's original location on Kelly road near eight mile.

But, after years of going there, my husband and I started to get 'snubbed' by the owner. I still do not know why, or what we did. We stooped going to the smaller location.

Years later, we tried the Jefferson location. Same coldness. Haven't gone back yet.

i only bring this up because this is the only place, in my 54 years, I've even been treated like this any restaurant.

Prepared Food at Farmers Markets [DTW & metro]

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one turned off by the prices at royal oak.

Remember-Vang Family farms and the Greening of Detroit will be showing up soon at Eastern. Vang is one of my favorite stands at eastern!

PS-As long as eastern market gets vendors as good as Corridor sausage-i'm for more vendors. And the rebuilding of the old Hirt's is coming along!

Alternative to Caul Fat

I asked some questions at eastern market yesterday, Corridor Sausage said that Wolverine packing has caul fat-you have to buy about 20 pounds-but it's around $2.00 a pound.

DTW Chow alert: Hankuk Oriental Grocery & Restaurant (long)

Ah...don't be so hard on them. I've tried fancy Korean and lunch counter Korean (lots of that in Ann Arbor) and I take this little "dive" over most of them. The family treats you well, and the mandu dumplings are all hand made. The owners did have other restaurants before-this is where a GI brought his korean bride. How many ex-military guys make sure their wife's have a grocery and restaurant to remind them of home?
If this is granny cooking-I like it-I've been going to Hankuk for over 5 years now for my bi-bim-bop fix.
PS-Anyone in Detroit remember the first korean place in Detroit-Koreana, which was at Gratiot near Seven Mile? Man, long gone-but I miss that place.

Birthday dinner help needed for Downtown Detroit

Traffic Jam & Snug at Canfield & Second: Mid-town Shangri-la on Cass near Warren: Cass Cafe" (very casual) are very close to the mid town Noel Night festivities. Should fit their needs, and none will break the bank.

Detroit Trip Report (long!)

Sorry. The urban gardens were about 2 blocks east of the Yacht Club, but on the same street (Farnsworth.) Also, with plant die off-they are looking a bit bedraggled. Truthfully, the biggest of the gardens-a peach-nectarine-pear orchard a street south of Farnsworth-doesn't look like much until you really look.

Kimchi in Metro Detroit?

Oh my god...any Korean market in the Troy -Sterling Heights area has kim chee. Any Korean resterant has Kim Chee. If I remember correctly, Asia Mart on Rochester Road near Big Beaver has up to gallon jars of the stuff!

Hankuk on Gratiot (between 13 and 14 mile) has handmade kim chee-great hole in the wall bare bones resterant attached.
Also-even Saigon Market-John R, around 13 1/2 mile, has a garlic/ginger Kim chee.

Anyone really know what's going on about the R Hirt closing? (DTW)

Detroiters should know about R Hirt's in Eastern Market closing at the end of the year. This is one of the best places in the Detroit area for cheeses and gourmet foods! Is it the economy? Or a family squabble, as the media is reporting? They can't close!

Detroit Food Tour

The 'night market"- the wholesale part of Eastern Market-is open weekdays from about 1 am to 6:30 am-if you are adventurous.

The website isn't in error-Tuesdays are gone until next year.

Detroit Food Tour

Hey, I live eight blocks from the Polish yacht club! (I guess that makes me a tough foodie.) And, three blocks from that restaurant, is as nice as any block anywhere-I call it the Yes Farm collective-where there is urban farming going on. Rising Pheasant Farms-they sell sunflower sprouts, among other vegetables, at Eastern Market-is four blocks from Polish Yacht Club.

Detroit Food Tour

Cadieux Cafe can be hit or miss, but it's the only place for bowls of mussels. The atmosphere can be neighborhood bar/sports bar.

Try the Polish Yaught Club for polish food. ( I miss Under the Eagle, when it was good, for polish...)

There was a Bosnian restaurant at Caniff and Joseph Campau,,,I think it just changed name and owners. Good cheap chevapi.

Dim sum recommendations? [Detroit]

Huh-this is the first time I heard Wah Court just changed, not completely died. Do you have an address for May Wah?

At one time, before the borders got--wonky--Wah Court is where I'd also go for a Christmas Eve feast. If I can find them again-I'd be most grateful. Thanks!

Dim sum recommendations? [Detroit]

Wah court, late and lamented, was my go to place for dim sum. Golden Harvest at 12 and Van Dyke sells the cold Dim Sum-unless they have improved since the last time I was there. (Golden Harvest does a much better job with their other food.)

I live near i-75 and i-94: I'd like to find somewhere closer than Farmington. I do know about Shangri-La Midtown-which is good, but nowhere are good as when Mr. Wong ruled over Wong's eatery in Windsor.

I'm hoping that a rumored chinese restaurant that's still in the building stages at 13 mile & John r, right by Taipan Bakery, will fill my cravings.

Try the Vietnamese chicken. It reminds me of pho soup. I've been buying from Corridor Sausage ever since he showed up at Eastern Market in February 2011.
