Conference reception venue near McCormick place - Monday evening in July 2012
Chicago experts: I'm planning the annual awards event for our professional association for about 50-60 people. We get together once a year, know each other well, and this has shifted from the formal, sit down, banquet-type(thank goodness) to more of a mixer / reception where we roast and toast our colleagues from about 7 - 10 pm.
I'm looking for a great spot for our group - ethnic, eclectic, fusion, we can do anything - for a drinks reception / buffet.
The conference is at McCormick place and most people will be coming directly from there or the conference hotels, though we can handle walking a few blocks or cabbing someplace not too terribly far.
Restaurants with private dining seem like one way to go, though ideally it would be a place that would welcome the Monday night business and not be too expensive. (Attendees will pay around $50 for a ticket, we're trying to get sponsors to cover the rest.) Thanks for any suggestions!
need advice on affordable New England wedding venues
A friend of mine got married at home. It was delightful. She had a tent and catering. You might try finding a site like an orchard or state park with a tent or lodge. Another friend had a beautiful wedding this winter, ceremony at the Old South Meeting house, we walked to the Old State House for a reception. Catering was by Above and Beyond which was nice too. http://www.aboveabc.com
You also might consider a brunch reception. Other friends had a brunch reception at the Larz Anderson Museum, catering by Blue Ribbon BBQ which was also v. fun.

Looking for after work space for a workshop w/appetizers & drinks
Looking for an after work place to go with a professional association in Boston for casual networking as well as a kind of mixer / workshop for about an hour after work in late July. The ideal would be a place that would have appetizers / happy hour-type light fare and people could just order their own drinks. I've been to successful ones at The Vault, OM and Vlora, they seem to want more suggestions.
Must be in Boston or Cambridge area with access to public transportation that isn't too involved. Thank you!

Symphony #8 - the finale
We liked Symphony8. We are BSO fans, not elderly, and attend a few concerts a year. Our servers were great and completely accommodating when we mentioned we had to make it to the concerts. They have Cuban sandwiches and chicken-and-waffles on the menu, too. Big pours. Our past pre-Symphony dinners have involved Betty's - which is good, VERY good for people with very specific dietary requirements as they can accommodate anything - they also have Cuban sandwiches:) Pho & I is good but tends to be jammed before the concerts - they take reservations too.
Give Symphony8 another try, they are working out the kinks.
CnD Barbecue Grille in Wakefield
We tried CnD's last night. Great barbecue. 4 types of sauce: regular, spicy, honey BBQ & garlic. Dana, the BBQ chef, knows his way around a grill. St. Louis-style barbecue in four sizes. I got a serving which is four ribs. My husband loves pulled pork and he got a sandwich - very tender, just the right amount of spice in his opinion. All the expected sides - baked beans, collard greens, macaroni and cheese(of the homespun variety, good stuff), coleslaw, cornbread, more. They also have lunch combos, and catering services. Very nice folks, you feel good patronizing a business like this. And it was tasty!
cafe jag in wakefield
We enjoyed Cafe Jag's last weekend, we've been going out maybe once a month or so with another couple to check out independent, local restaurants. Beautiful room, ambitious menu, lot of seafood on it, fine meal - and the chef personally thanked us! We look forward to returning.
Restaurants for octogenarians?
We finally went to the Continental after being fascinated every time we drove by. Menu is surf / turf, filet mignon that kind of thing. And popovers! And an 'early bird' menu.
But best of all - rotating pianists, open mike, and a guaranteed floor show every night. Lot of seniors singing very earnestly and well, too! Dress up / dancing for this set too on the weekend.
You OWE it to yourself to go at least once - it is truly like stepping back in time, when the world was a smaller and more gracious place(and fine dining was chicken marsala).
South End dining for a group of 12-15
We do this with a group of our friends each year at the holidays. We did go to Pops this year and it was perfect. We had the entire back room, which was ideal for a big group of us(around 15 or so). The service was some of the best I've had, really friendly and acommodating waiter, and they even gave us a bottle of bubbles at the end. There are also small / share plates for $10.00.
We went to Rocca the previous year. Gorgeous room, food outstanding, a little on the expensive side if you are going to be doing a lot of talking and switching places and sharing stories / pix etc.
Seeking SEnd dinner for 12 - week of Dec 21
Thanks all!
We will check out Pops, Stella and Gaslight...
Haven't heard of Prezza, will check that out too.
You are great!
Seeking SEnd dinner for 12 - week of Dec 21
If you were getting together with about a dozen pals that see each other once a year, in the South End, where would you go?
We did Rocca last year - which was great - wanted something different this year, maybe more of a bistro setting.
Thanks!
Deep fried crispy shredded chilli beef
I checked out this thread because we had something like this for the first time, but with chicken, at Fuloon in Malden, which we tried thanks to our Chowhound enthusiasts on this board. It was so good. If not on the menu maybe they could prepare some this way.

Current consensus on best "everyday" sushi?
Just wanted to say we enjoyed JP Seafood in Jamaica Plain; very good and very reasonable, too. Tried a couple of varieties, I think it was about a dozen pieces and they were great. My husband does not care for sushi but they have a varied menu with something for everyone. http://www.jpseafoodcafe.com/sushi.html
Giulio's Bakery, Wakefield
We live in Wakefield and love Giulio's. I tend to be a purist and I am fond of those very basic, Italian sesame cookies and the one's at Giulio's are the very best, bar none.
Thanks for the tip on the Irving station muffins! Be sure to try out the trivia question they offer each day. If you get it correct, you get a free coffee to go with it!
excellent caterer needed
I second Tables of Content; we've used them for our office and attendees remarked on how good it was: http://www.tablesofcontent.com/
The best catering I've ever enjoyed was from Basil Tree at a holiday party a few years ago. The food was fantastic and really distinctive buffet presentation, I sought out the card - hope to hire them one day:

Pumpkin tortellini, for take-away
Could anyone make a recommendation for pumpkin tortellini in Boston or Saugus / North Shore area? For takeout, or frozen. Thanks!
Seeking minature ice cream cones(to buy)
I have searched high and low for mini ice cream cones, I know that Joy makes 'kids cones' which are a smaller size. Does anyone have suggestions for where to get these in the city or north of the city? i want to serve them at a party and feel it is kind of ridiculous to order them from the Internet. all suggestions welcomed. Have tried Whole Foods, Shaw's in the city, the North End, Savenors.
South end / biz lunch w/some intimacy
hi all - Meeting a potential recruit for lunch today(we know each other well though). Where would you take someone in the South End, good lunch spot, not too loud, to have a talk with someone to convince them to come aboard - so ideally where you can have a conversation, with no overwrought interiors and great food?
Wild Blueberries or Italian prune plums?
I generally buy wild Maine blueberries frozen at Market Basket. Not as good, but available year round for the most part....
