My family situation/pink pork

I think that if you make a meal in someone else's home, you have some obligation to do it to their specifications. For example, I wouldn't make pork in a Muslim home or make grilled cheese for my cheese hating sister. I also wouldn't serve meat that the host considered underdone. If I were her and my family member did this, I'd be embarrassed. Rightfully so? Who knows.

Ultimately, it's such a minor thing, why get upset? She wasn't asking for unsafely cooked meat, just meat you don't prefer. It also sounds like you've had it before and know how she makes it- why make an issue of it today? If she's not grateful for your help or otherwise annoying, decline to cook there in the future. Don't set yourself up for failure.

You did. Not everyone who asks for your advice is mandated to take it.

Forgot Frozen Stouffers Lasagna in trunk of car for 2 weeks, is it okay to refreeze and eat since its been cold out?

Well, I realize the engine is in the front, but presumably you use the heat. That, combined with the exhaust running near the trunk will certainly warm things up back there. We had a pretty extreme winter last year so I could've gotten away with storing things in the trunk if my vehicle was in a garage, I think, though I wouldn't have left items in there while I drove around. Frankly, I just wouldn't be comfortable doing this because of the variation in temperature.

Do you leave stuff in there while you drive around?

Quesadilla Maker for Passover

I got one as a gift years ago and it worked really well. Made great quesadillas without any real effort. But...it was just too big to keep around and eventually went to Goodwill.

What to tip at authentic Chinese/dim sum?

If you went to a restaurant that wouldn't customize your order and the wait staff was white, would you still stiff them? As far as I'm aware, waiters are people who bring food to your table. Tip them appropriately. If you don't want to, stay home.

hopefully a different tipping post- recommended tip on split check

Every time I've had a split check, it's been like that.

Quiche questions

I always use Gourmet Magazine's crustless quiche recipe. I've changed the ham and veg part dozens of times and it's always worked perfectly. http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/foo...

What turns you off about restaurant restrooms?

Just got back from Vietnam and discovered a new bathroom annoyance... Many Western style restrooms did not have toilet paper in the stalls- just a large dispenser by the sink. That was a bit disconcerting.

Does Risotto Reheat?

I routinely make risotto and bring leftovers to work. It reheats pretty well and is still tasty. It tends to not be quite as good (less creamy) so I probably wouldn't serve it to guests, but I'm happy eating it. Also, risotto doesn't really require a recipe so you can make as little as you want.

Dim sum recently?

I wouldn't call it classic dim sum, but it is delicious. The dishes are pretty generous so it's not hard to get out of there for a reasonable amount. I was there a few weeks ago and 3 of us had 12 or so dishes. I especially enjoyed the Penang curry and sausage fried rice.

Popcorn - Movies?

Just don't go to the movies then. There's nothing unethical about running a business and trying to maximize the profits. It's not as though movies are a basic need. Personally, I prefer Redbox.

housewarming gift?rude

It would be pretty odd to me, but you know your friend. How did they seem to take it?

Thanksgiving Appetizers

Gougeres and crudités are the usual at my house. I like roasted veggies with a dill dip- more interesting than the supermarket tray but not too much work really.

Cocktail Party for Charity Etiquette

What about collecting an item? Canned food or a toy or toiletries for a shelter? That way, everyone can participate and won't feel awkward about giving a small check. Lots of great items can be purchased at a discount store. Plus, it's tough to have an objection to giving to homeless people or a food bank, etc. Guests might not always agree with your choice of charity but those are pretty universal.

Sounds like a lovely idea! Have a wonderful party.

Is it disappointing for you not to eat turkey or ham on Thanksgiving?

There's nothing I particularly *need* to eat. For me, it's about family and fellowship, not a rigid list of foods.

Don't Cook a Turkey If It's Tamales You're Thankful For

I doubt anyone would care. Thanksgiving is usually celebrated at home. Personally, I have no idea what most people do for Thanksgiving and I don't care. Thanksgiving is about giving thanks for your blessings, not eating a meal your family doesn't care for. We've had ham for Thanksgiving. I hate dressing. And sweet potato pie. And all things pumpkin. I had no idea I was so un-American.

Now, if you made a stink of it and ran up and down the street screaming about how you hate Thanksgiving, that might inspire others to dislike you. But just because you make tamales instead of turkey? C'mon.

Guest Calling the Shots

That could very well be. I'm just exhausted by the complaint of "I asked someone to do something and they did it and now I'm offended". Everyone has different ideas of good manners. It sounds like a fixed menu and drink coupons are the way to go for the OP.

Guest Calling the Shots

How is the employee taking charge of the ordering? Presumably, the employees are allowed to order the entree and drink of their choice. If appetizers are specifically not allowed, the host should announce that. To me, an appetizer is a normal part of a meal and at a community meal, I might check with those around me so we could order appetizers to share. As for the shots, it's no different that each employee ordering their own shots. The boss needs to stop encouraging people to "order whatever they want" since that's not what he actually means.

Guest Calling the Shots

Yep, totally. I actually like my coworkers and we do socialize but, gosh, a Visa card would be so appreciated.

Guest Calling the Shots

So, 2 things-

If you encourage everyone to order what they want, you don't get to get in a snit when they do it.

If it's become too expensive, go with a fixed menu. Many restaurants will accommodate this and it's a great way to control costs.

OMG, Williams Sonoma

That's actually an awesome idea.

Is it depressing to dine out on Thanksgiving?

I've often worked Thanksgiving and I never felt depressed about it. I was thankful to have a career I enjoyed and to give the opportunity to others to take the day off work. Plus, restaurants that are open are usually slow so I got great service. And tipped well!

What turns you off about restaurant restrooms?

I was referring more to the fact that I wouldn't chase someone thru a store with my pants down and the few seconds it took to pull them up gives the thief time to drop your bag in a bigger bag and stroll away.

What turns you off about restaurant restrooms?

Yeah, I've taken a few reports for this. Not a ton, but a few. It's fairly smart, I think. The victim doesn't know what the suspect looks like and is slowed down by, ya know, straightening themselves out.

What turns you off about restaurant restrooms?

I love the doors at Ikea. They have a little grabby thing on the bottom of the door that you can use to open the door with your foot. I love it. Doors are pretty nasty. Or at least the trash can!

In the middle of the door so no one can reach over and grab it!

First Date Food?

Ha! I asked my husband if he planned to get married again (I wanted to get married) and if he wanted kids (I don't). It just seemed like 2 majors things to get out of the way. We can't compromise on those issues, so I want to know if I'm wasting my time. It worked out :)

Are we meant to tip at a Sonic Drive-In? Or others?

There's a Sonic in Winchester but I can't remember if it has a drive thru or not.
