Wine ettiquette question

Well...yeah. Why accept something you won't eat/drink? A simple "no thanks" works for me. I guess they could set it in front of me but if I've already declined, then I'm no longer the rude one. Iced tea, please!

Red Hook Lobster Pound DC

Ha. I only like claw meat. Maybe we'll team up and get a lobster :)

Table Hogs and Coffee House Etiquette

As a cop, I hope you don't actually do that. Not having a spot to sit in a coffee shop is not remotely a police matter. It wastes resources.

Really? I enjoyed my lunch there and didn't find it particularly crowded. It's a cafeteria so don't expect a sit down vibe. It is somewhat expensive, though. It was a nice break from the usual sad museum fare.

Is it possible to successfully halve a risotto recipe?

Risotto is infinitely scalable. After the first time or two you make it, you'll see how it comes together. I make risotto for one pretty often.

The Museum of the American Indian has a particularly good cafeteria, Mitsitam. The museum is interesting though not huge. 2 hours is plenty so it's a nice morning expedition before lunch.

Is it healthier to eat red meat in moneration or avoid it?

OMG I always hoped that would happen! I'm out!

But how many calories were in the carrot's memory?!

Pronunciation-checked at Penzey’s

I agree. To use myself as an example, I pronounce Washington as WARSHtin. When I encounter someone from outside the region I grew up in who pronounces it differently, I don't automatically assume they're correcting me. That seems overly touchy to me.

I appreciate it if I learn how to say a word correctly. I know quite a few words that I've never actually heard spoken.

Banquet hall tipping - when guest thinks servers are getting it, but owners pocket all...

Yes, part of that set fee goes to pay you. You may not be getting handed cash but the fees the owner collects are paying you. If the customer wants to pay you extra cash, cool but I would imagine people think you make a lot less than $22/hour.

Le Creuset color samples

Oh crap. You're completely right. Sorry about that!

Le Creuset color samples

The Food Network Magazine's most recent issue had a list and color sample of every Le Creuset color ever manufactured. There were like 9 different grays!

Anyone thought about selling their homemade dishes or pastry? Does it need any license?

I think when you said you built your business in a day, we assumed it was fairly easy. Personally, I have no idea. Never done it. But, yeah, that was my take away.

St Augustine: Critique this newbie's itinerary for 3-day weekend

For Sunday's breakfast, you might try 95 Cordova at Casa Monica. Beautiful building and fantastic omelets. We try to stop in St. Augustine when we visit family in Florida and 95 Cordova and The Columbia are musts for us. I believe 95 Cordova opens quite early- maybe 730?

You're going to sell hot foods over the Internet?

Clarke County Farmers' Market

When we lived in Aldie, I loved riding my bike up to Gum Spring Library. The market there was small but worth the trip. We'll see how this one shakes out. Too bad I can't ride my bike :)

As a foodie, what do you do for lunch during the week?

I've never worked in a big city so there's that. Breakfast is oatmeal and for lunch, I just bring left overs or Trader Joe's Indian frozen meals. I also don't have the time or the money to eat out 10 meals a week!

Clarke County Farmers' Market

Hey guys! I just found out that Clarke County has a farmers' market. It's located in Berryville at 20 S. Church Street and runs May-October on Saturdays from 8-12. Looks like the vendor list isn't too extensive but I'm looking forward to checking it out. I've been to Mackintosh Fruit Farm and their produce is fantastic. Their grapes are the very definition of what a grape should be!

Wedding reception food/questions. Professional input welcome....

I think it sounds lovely. Personally, I'm always delighted to be invited to someone's home or family event in a foreign country. It's a chance to really experience that country. Hopefully, your DIL's family will feel that way, too.

I wouldn't think the sandwich guy would be insulted but I'm not in the business. Hopefully, someone else will weigh in.

Are food trucks an option? (Only if you want/need another option.) That might be a fun idea.

Congrats and enjoy!

Do you love the concept of organic peanut butter but just hate the mess?

Ooh that sounds wonderful! Do you have a recipe?

Complain or Shut Up?

Eh. I suspect if a place is serving flat, warm beer and rotten oysters, they're not too put out by being told it's the worst meal someone ever had. emglow101 left 20% so I doubt the server cared and I can say with certainty the kitchen doesn't care if they're sending out crap like that.

"This is the worst meal I've ever had" can be said politely. Politeness doesn't equal only saying positive things.

Complain or Shut Up?

Uh, if the server asks how the food is, don't they want to know?

Washington DC and VA burbs "ethnic" restaurants

Oh snacks and a good book are a must. You really have to settle in for the long haul. People at my DMV have been seen bringing pillows. I don't judge them...

Washington DC and VA burbs "ethnic" restaurants

Whoa that never happens!

Washington DC and VA burbs "ethnic" restaurants

Ah. Thanks. DMV always throws me, as a Virginian. I always think of the Dept. of Motor Vehicles and it takes a second.

DVM?

Complain or Shut Up?

I recently went to a local place that people seem to rave about. Frankly, it wasn't good. I ordered a simple dinner of roast chicken, corn, and mashed potatoes. The chicken skin was flabby, the corn was clearly frozen, and the potatoes were dry. When the perfectly nice high school aged waiter came over to check on us, we said it was fine. Clearly, this is how the restaurant cooks and telling him isn't going to change it. Nothing was unsafe- no undercooked chicken, etc. we just won't go back. I suspect the shine will wear off and people won't be as enthusiastic soon.

Does anybody give out their real email address or number? That seems a bit naive.
