Do you pray before a meal?

I offer a prayer before meals but not out loud since my husband is a different religion than me. We view each other's religion with a small sprinkling of suspicion :)

Why everyone should stop calling immigrant food ‘ethnic’

Perhaps it is regional. When posters ask about ethnic food on the DC board, I'm just as likely to recommend Zaytinya, Jaleo, and Rasika as I would Nando's or somewhere low end. More often, really. I prefer to spend money on great food and, in the DC area, that costs money. To me, ethnic isn't synonymous with cheap.

What is your perfect breakfast?

Poached egg on fried potatoes, couple slices of cheese, and hot tea.

Need help with my new Zojirushi rice cooker

I've both rinsed and not rinsed and can tell a difference but don't really care.

Resturants near Falling Water and the Laurel Highlands area 2015

I thought Falling Water had a pretty decent little cafe. Make sure to stop at Kentuck Knob- they also have a nice little snack bar area.

5 Guys vs. In & Out... Time for a simple vote

I wish I had the choice! No In & Out near me. I had it once in LA and it was pretty tasty.

Need Help on Rice Cooker Size + Rice Seasonings!?!?

I have a 3 cup Zojirushi and am the only one who eats rice in my house and it's more than sufficient. I'd get a 5.5 for 3 adults.

Eat it however you like. I like rice as a breakfast dish with some sugar, cinnamon, and butter...an idea I got from Chowhound :)

what is the trick to not have rice boil over?

I've heard of this method quite a few times now. I need to give it a shot one of these days.

DC for 5 days in August Eating thoughts

Rasika is fantastic though I prefer the setting of Rasika West End. It's a little more relaxed. The palak chaat is one of the few dishes I dream of.

Making dates taste better

There's a tapas place near me that stuff dates with cheese and wraps them in bacon. I doubt it's healthy but it's one of my favorite dishes in the world!

Lasagna?

I've assembled a lasagna but didn't bake it until later in the day several times and never noticed a decline in quality.

"eggs over easy" what does it mean?

Huh. Around here (Northern Virginia), over easy gets me runny yolks and jiggly whites. Over medium (my preference) gets me thick, oozy yolks and firm, set whites.

Would you buy dessert sauces at a farmers market?

I really only buy produce at farmers markets so, no.

The Etiquette of Bringing Your Own Meal on a Plane

Yeah, I think that's the crux of the nut argument. They're an awesome travel snack. I don't think people would dig in their heels so much if we were talking about, say, Oreos.

I agree with you about the nut thing. Personally, I hadn't realized it was such as issue. Airlines should make more of a stink about it if that's the case. I fly often enough that I tune out the safety spiel and would probably miss an announcement about not consuming nuts.

That said, I'm surprised you rail against people being inconsiderate and then advocate bringing kimchi or sauerkraut as a snack. They're pretty odiferous.

The Etiquette of Bringing Your Own Meal on a Plane

Wow. That's absolutely horrendous. (And a ringing endorsement to bring your own munchies.)

Babybel and Triscuits! The snack of champions.

The Etiquette of Bringing Your Own Meal on a Plane

I'm surprised airlines don't post signs asking passengers not to bring nuts on the plane. It's a pretty common snack.

Pastas - Different quality?

Pastas - Different quality?

I don't support Barilla and switched to DeCecco after making that decision. In a happy coincidence, I found that I enjoy the taste of DeCecco better. It's not wildly better than Barilla but enough that it's my go to now.

What gadgets/cookware would you have in an efficiency apt? (my list) (kid leaving in fall)

All of this. Plus, meals in college are a way to form community. Eating yeast rolls and yogurt in your dorm while everyone else is getting to know each other over pizza and crappy cafeteria food is isolating.

2 things:

Does the college even permit all these electric gadgets?

Tell him to give it up with the yogurt maker. His roommates might ok it to be polite but nobody wants very limited counter space taken up by a yogurt maker of all things.

Offering alternative meals to children - yay or nay

My mom cooked dinner most nights (when we were old enough we'd pitch in) and we were allowed to make a peanut butter sandwich if we didn't care for dinner. Although she thought she was a great cook, she made some crappy stuff so the peanut butter alternative beat not eating. Contrary to popular belief, we did not grow up to be entitled, mannerless heathens. DH and I aren't having kids but I wouldn't force people to choose between eating something they despise and going hungry. Kids don't want dinner? Great- I have lunch for work tomorrow.

New Orleans May Trip Report (long)

Thanks for the report. It sounds like a delicious trip. I rarely repeat vacations and New Orleans is one of the very few places I make an exception for. There's always something new to discover! I'll definitely use your report in planning my next trip.

Oof, no. It takes me over 20 hours in coach on a Chinese carrier to get to SE Asia. The food is pretty wretched. That said, I don't go all out. Some fruit, granola and crackers are fine.

How to word invitation to restaurant party where I can't pay for super-expensive meals?

Me too! I've never been to a place where the entrees range from $50 to $300.
