Restaurant checking your belongings

Er, if the idea behind leaving luggage and strollers at the host stand is that they might contain explosives, I can assure you it makes no difference. It's not as though being 30 feet from explosives makes you safe. And think of the host! Anyway, I ask to leave my large luggage at the host stand so that people don't trip over it. That's all.

I'm rather skeptical that terrorists think that bombing a restaurant would be "better" than bombing a school or government building. Joe's is fine but certainly not general knowledge to most Americans.

No, I just carry a small purse and my husband doesn't carry anything.

I hate it when I don't know how to pronounce a food's name in a restaurant

People care about correct pronunciation but not knowing won't stop this crowd. The app is a neat idea but I personally wouldn't use it.

Does anyone ever order hot water with lemon?

I do that but I tell them I have my own tea bag. Restaurant tea selection is invariably crappy. Sigh.

Possible Double Standard Regarding Dietary Needs/Preferences

I wonder if maybe she feels uncomfortable going to a halal butcher. Many people I know won't shop at Asian grocery stores because of the sense of otherness- the sights and smells are different than an American grocery store, most patrons and nearly all the staff are Asian, a different language is being spoken, the merchandise isn't always labelled in English, etc. It can be overwhelming. Perhaps a field trip is in order.

How do you cook a grey steak medium rare?

Personally, if I were a guest, I would just help myself to sides and not eat the steak. But, I can see how some would be annoyed that you won't cook a portion to their desired level of doneness. Maybe grab a filet mignon or some other cut you feel won't be desecrated by being prepared well done?

Of course you don't serve one person something different. Why not serve wagyu to people you think will appreciate it instead of trying to make it look like something else?

I know what wagyu is. Solution: don't serve it to people who prefer steak cooked well done. I'd love a nice roasted chicken over having my steak disguised as being more well done than it is.

Eh, I prefer my steak medium well so I don't really get all this hand wringing. At the end of the day, people are enjoying their meals so who cares? I'm just puzzled as to why the OP would be "mortified", specifically. Why should s/he feel embarrassed?

I don't mind it.

Delivering hot water is "terrifying"? Oh my. Is it less terrifying if there's a tea bag in it?

Introducing New Conversation Types

I'm not nuts about the new format but I don't mind it. The hearts are childish, though. A thumbs up has been suggested and would be perfect.

Well, yes, you explained what it was above. No need for links.

SNAP POLL—WOULD YOU USE A COOKWARE “LENDING LIBRARY”?

Yeah, I'm in (super wealthy, land of McMansions) Northern VA. Never heard of a tag sale.

Typically, yeah. It varies by store, of course, but I've never had a problem.

SNAP POLL—WOULD YOU USE A COOKWARE “LENDING LIBRARY”?

Maybe I'd participate in a local one but I wouldn't do one by mail. Too costly. Plus, if I'm interested in a pan, I can just buy it and return it or sell it if I don't like it.

Feedback on New Orleans itinerary

Cochon Butcher is great. I loved the Cubano. If you like pickles, you'll be obsessed with theirs!

"Starbucks Demands Barista Remove Tattoo or Resign"

Glad you clarified. My husband shaves his head and no one has ever asked why. Of course, he keeps it shaved. I've actually never seen him with hair. I guess it you go back and forth, that would be disconcerting for people.

Why coconut oil?

I dig it for curries and other dishes that won't mind a hint of coconut. I don't think it's any more or less paleo than olive oil- just depends on where your ancestors of choice lived.

Cutting Lasagna

Well, what else would you do? We place our dishes in the dishwasher as we use them and run it when it's full. In our 2 person house, I'd say we run a load about every 4-5 days.

Responsibility

I have...an urgent care doc once told me I had tonsillitis. I had my tonsils removed 20 years previously so I told him that seemed unlikely. Fortunately, my regular doc is awesome.

Really? You've never gotten an antibiotic or broken a bone? I'm fairly young and have no health issues but I certainly have been helped by doctors.

That's easy enough. Is there a strict uniform or could you, say, wear a long sleeved shirt to cover an arm tattoo?

"Starbucks Demands Barista Remove Tattoo or Resign"

I'm curious to know if any CHers have specific tattoo policies at work.

Here's mine: no neck or face tattoos, no wrist or hand tattoos except for a band on the left ring finger no more than 1/3 inch in width. One visible tattoo allowed in the uniform of the day (pants and short sleeved shirt) if it can be covered by the employee's palm.

Finally, no visible tattoos that a reasonable person would find offensive. And, no, I'm not fielding questions about what's offensive. That poor horse has been beat to death!

Anybody else?
