A Four-Year-Old reviews... The French Laundry

As long as you can behave, I couldn't care less how old you are. Dining at The French Laundry is doable for some kids I know and impossible for some adults I know.

NO WE CAN NOT. THERE IS NO LIGHTENING UP ON CH. ;)

How is going to this restaurant something a child should "earn" their way into? If you take your kid to any restaurant, why not take them here? You sit, you eat your food, and behave nicely. As long as it's not an inappropriate place for kids to be (no lewd dancing!), take 'em. Would I? Nah, but that's because I'm cheap. It's not up to me to tell people how to spend their money.

Have you ever left a Restaurant...

Like foodieX2 said, that's entirely different. If your religious beliefs prevent you from eating, that's one thing. Although I'm Catholic too and I've cobbled together meals out of sides.... Sipping water while everyone eats because you just can't bear to eat anything but that one dish is childish to me.

I rather like the soup and salad meal. The salads are always fresh and the sausage and potato soup is tasty. I've never understood the anti-chain vehemence I encounter here. Is it a destination? Nah, but it's a decent meal and I'm not above it.

Return "sweet" fruit that isn't sweet?

I live out in the boondocks. I just chuck fruit and veg that have gotten old or aren't great out for the critters. I don't recommend this in the suburbs :)

Have you ever left a Restaurant...

I think in a big group, it's fine, but if you're in a group of just 2 or 3, not eating is bizarre. It's very attention seeking and uncomfortable for the others. If I go out with a couple girlfriends and our plan was to have a meal together, it would be strange if one person just sat there sipping water while the rest of us ate a meal.

I can't imagine there's nothing on a menu you can find to enjoy. Beyond that, I'd lose my mind if I was hungry at meal time and sat at a table watching people eat. No idea how people do this.

Sometimes it's easier to just give up...

Ugh my mom does this. She likes the attention (certainly not implying your wife does), so we've taken to ignoring her and enjoying our meal. It seems to annoy her :)

Chicago-style Hot Dogs & Eats?

Thanks! I live in Bluemont and am in Leesburg regularly so I'm excited to have a new spot to try.

Chicago-style Hot Dogs & Eats?

What do you like there? A hot dog place seemed weird to me, but if it's good, I'll give it a shot.

What I Learned After Taking a Homeless Mother Grocery Shopping

Yes, in the US. We'll agree to disagree.

Unsanitary behavior by restaurant employees

They're less sanitary if the wearer is a twit. If they understand basic food safety (or universal precautions in my example), it's fine. It's silly to decide gloves are useless if you just don't understand them. I do agree that gloves are no cleaner or less clean than intact skin. You've got to change gloves as often as you wash your hands, so as long as your hands are clean, I don't care. But, if I can see they're not, yep, I speak up.

Wow. I'm an EMT and it's amazing what some coworkers do with gloves on. Just think it through! Don't work on your patient with gloves on and then grab the radio, use your pen, etc without doffing them.

Unsanitary behavior by restaurant employees

I would have said something to the manager. There's a strange misconception that gloves are used to protect the wearer in food service. Nope, they're used to protect the customer! I especially hate when someone wearing gloves handles money and then goes back to the food. I always tell the person I'd like them to change their gloves.

2 weeknight stay in October

There are lots of threads on DC but my top recommendations are always Jaleo for tapas (get like 7 orders of patatas bravas ;), Rasika/Rasika West End (love, love, love the palak chaat), and Mitsitam in the Museum of the American Indian.

Random suggestion- do a Segway tour. I just did one and it's a really near way to see sites that I'd never seen before and I'm a DC metro area lifelong resident. And ours ended not too far from Zaytinya so we gorged on hummus and fattoush. Perfect!

Civility

Really? I'd always thought it was from WWII machine gunners. The ammo belt was 9 yards long.

Garam Masla mix

Honestly, garam masala is a bit expensive to make if you're not going to use it much. I buy a pre made packet at my local Asian grocery store.

Also, chicken tikka masala is a UK dish so no need to agonize about authenticity. Just taste and tweak as you go.

Group dinner restaurants for mid-September

Ris is fantastic and a good choice for your group- not too noisy, interesting food and not terrible parking...always good in DC :)

Crazy Janes Mixed up Salt.

Well, sure, when you put less salt on food, it's less salty. I should have said I prefer seasonings other than salt. A little Maldon to finish and I'm happy.

Haha one of us gets up for work at 4am every day- there is no eating at 8pm for us either. Guess we'll be weird Americans together :)

My Harris Teeter carries it but I've never tried. I prefer less salt on my food.

Attention all Trader Joe Shoppers!

Organic produce is usually less "pretty" than non-organic. No chemicals = no oddly, waxy, tasteless perfection. What difference does it make if they taste great? Personally, I prefer organic.

What should I serve with Truffled Mac and Cheese?

Something green! I do a baked asparagus that might work- just olive oil, salt and pepper, and topped with Parmesan, baked on sheet pan for about 12 minutes. You could leave off the cheese and just squeeze some lemon over it so that your meal isn't too cheesy. Although, I would argue that nothing can ever be too cheesy :)

Looking for AFFORDABLE caterers!

Where is the event and how many people will you be having?

What I Learned After Taking a Homeless Mother Grocery Shopping

Yes! We have a vast array of government support for those in poverty that 3rd world countries simply do not/cannot have. I can't understand why people romanticize poverty. It stinks.
