Staying in Vienna, visiting DC, where to get healthy cheap eats?

Can I ask what your price range is? Yes, Vienna is far out but it's on the metro orange line which takes you right to the Mall.:) I live in Oakton and can vouch for everything mentioned in Vienna and Merrifield/ Dun Loring and would add in Oakton Tigris Grill, which has very limited seating..and Kobkun for Thai and in Merrifield Pho Cyclo next to Elephant Jump for a solid bowl of pho.. On the Mall you are limited to the museum food..which has vastly improved in the past ten years but limits you. If you are willing to walk, Teaism always works.
Girl Scouts Hit DC Need Good Places at Good Prices to Eat Suppers
Where you are staying can help determine any safety issue. For the most part, you should be completely fine:) I went for a night time stroll amongst the cherry blossoms a few weeks ago. It was a good 9 30 at night and the basin, which is not lit at night, was crowded! Kids and parents were taking it all in! Like any place else, just always be aware of your surroundings and have your plan, which it seems you do. All the suggestions for food are good..If you go to Teaism they have this amazing salty chocolate oatmeal cookie...Oh and the museums have gelato...just sayin':)
Can heavy cream be replaced with reduced fat in a bisque without losing texture or flavor?
Thanks Everyone! I think I am going to go full on with the recipe because it's the first time I have made it and I'm making it for friends. I LOVE the fat free plus cornstarch idea. I have been using Land O Lakes ff for other things. I'm going to need to experiment!
Can heavy cream be replaced with reduced fat in a bisque without losing texture or flavor?
I'm going to be making Dublin Bay Prawn Bisque by Cathal Armstrong this weekend for friends. It calls for 4 cups heavy cream & 2 cups half-and-half.
Can I use reduced fat? I don't want to lose texture and too much flavor. Does it cook the same?
Here is a link to the recipe

POLL: Can you walk to an actual grocery store?
Oakton, VA. I can walk to my Giant and everything in the strip mall, my post office, my library..getting there in one piece is another thing.
Creole Seasoning
I like Zatarain's crab boil. It has some nice heat. I think if you check around you can find it in a local chain like Wegman's or Giant. My fave seasoning is Tony C's but it's not easy to find. My parents ship it up from NoLA.
Interesting places in Dunloring/Fairfax/Tyson's Corner
The Vienna Inn is an institution but I would go for a beer more than the food. I can vouch for Rose. I also like my Tigris Grill in Oakton but I only do carryout as they have very few tables. 4 Sisters is near Dun Loring and has solid Vietnamese. Also, in Falls Church there is La Caraqena, I have not been, but friends rave about it.
You've won the lottery - what will you be eating?
Food aside, this post made me cry. Coming from 3 sets of parents..,17 marriages...don't ask ...among them with every half/step sib divorced... this post lifted my heart. With that being said, the rocky family has made for cuisine infusion. My mom picked up Danish cuisine. My stepmom, born and bred in NoLA has taught me a mean roux, bbq shrimp, and jambalaya. Oh and I have mid-western and SoCal influences. With all of that being said, my money would be to hire a personal trainer.,,
Casual Dinner near the Holocaust Museum or Metro Center
I would say head up to Penn Quarter if you don't mind the extra hop.. So many more choices up there. Can you give a price range?
Hot or cold Sauerkraut? How do you eat it and with what?
AMEN! Our Ohio New Year meal was spareribs, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes and apple sauce! I also love a good Reuben and brats with kraut, spicy mustard, and raw chopped onions!
What food always catches your eye but that you (almost) never buy?
Hummus is VERY easy to make at home:)

I third en papilotte. I live in a small condo, however I like en papilotte because it's amazingly moist and flavorful. I do a monkfish with squeezed blood orange, fresh ginger, garlic...yum. With that being said, I like blackened tuna and only cook when I can open the windows ans let fresh air in!!!
Anywhere I can find British style bacon and sausage?
Pure Pasty Co. in Vienna VA carries imported extras from time to time. Plus I love the pasties:)

Need a unique hotel venue in the DMV for 50th birthday party
We may need more information. How much per head are you willing to spend? Would you prefer city or country setting? Are you looking for a sit down dinner, buffet style? Open bar?
New to D.C.!!! Where do I start? D.C. Staples
mmmm...have to disagree. If you are talking The Deli on Jermantown Road in the kmart shopping center...while I like it, I think Italian Store is better.
Graeters at Fresh Market in Vienna!
I would call and ask. Graeters seems to be carried by Krogers and Fresh Market. When I looked at the list from their website, Vienna wasn't listed. I happened to stop in and there it was! I and many others transplanted from SW Ohio are happy campers.
Graeters at Fresh Market in Vienna!
FYI For SW Ohio transplants, I stumbled on Graeters ice cream at the Fresh Market today. While the don't have my beloved mint chocolate chip, they do have the raspberry chocolate chip along with the classics.
Looking for a decent restaurant that isn't taking part in restaurant week
I like many of these choices but for a work dinner I would say Corduroy.
Reusable tote bag frustration
I live in the DC burbs and, if anything, the trend to CHARGE for using the store plastic bags is growing! I use recycle bags from every store from Fresh Market to Shoppers Food Warehouse and no one has ever made a comment about using a bag of a competitor. I use the wine recycle bags for olive oils, pasta sauces and such. A friend of mine used one for baby bottles.
Small kitchen dinner party logistics
I have the same issue but we make it work. The thing is, each of us has dwellings that have one great thing. My one friend has a fabulous deck and her place is great in the summer for grilling. Another friend has a fab city location. As for me, my condo may not be huge but I have a fireplace so I tend to entertain in the winter when one pot hearty amazing dishes and a crackling fire are a hit. I beg to differ on the one pot dish not being compatible. I do braised lamb shanks with caramelized shallots and onions and a braised Moroccan beef stew that both impress. I guess the thing is is that growing up I saw my mom SWEAT BULLETS over dinner parties yet she never truly enjoyed herself I think. I look at them not as social payback business must dos but as getting together with fabulous people over good conversation and good food. You miss out if you sweat it all out. IMHO.
Got a 3- crock slow cooker for Christmas, I love it- but I need some ideas!!!
LaLa,
You can do strata in a slow cooker?
Athina,
Gumbo, red beans and rice, and jambalaya!! OK and this is a far reach but you coulud do different braised cabbages with pork. The reason I say this is because I am Danish. Our red cabbage is very different from the German style. We don't use apple or caraway.
One thing with a slow cooker. Beware the fat and grease. I pretty much trim off all the fat I can.

You could do pulled pork with different types of bbq sauce. You could go for a north carolina vinegar, maybe a maple or hickory smoked? I can also see like a Caribbean black bean soup vs a senate bean soup vs a southwestern tortilla bean soup.
What's for dinner, the Holiday Edition! #120 [old]
Buttertart,
I am curious about your Danish red cabbage. Our Christmas Eve is frikadeller, red cabbage, and mashed potatoes. The red cabbage is slowly braised in the oven in a mixture of water, butter, sugar, and vinegar.
Recipes You've Never Heard of Outside Your Family
OMG we called this Johnny Marzetti but we baked it with macaroni noodles and in the last few minutes added more Velveeta which took on a rather plastic look yet we fought for it.
So a year or so ago I am sitting in my cube and at lunch a smell crosses my desk, as many do at lunch when you sit near the kitchenette. However, it's my Johnny Marzetti!! Turns out, it's my co worker who sits next to me! When I asked her about it, she was embarrassed. Turns out her mom used to make this thing called "goulash", especially when money was tight. Oh and BTW, co-worker is Irish. As for me? I have always homed in on my Danish heritage but when I booked a hiking trip through Ireland this summer, my mom informed me my great grandpa on her side was from Belfast!
Chili meat
Hey All,
I have recently discovered to joys of crockpot cooking and I'm trying to build a healthy recipe file. I want to make chili this weekend. I will be using beef but the question is what kind? I'd like something lean that after 8 hours will shred. London broil? What do you use?
Cuban Sandwich in NoVA
Dennis..the place near Ballston is Caribbean Breeze. I work in Ballston. One night we did HH there. They have lit up colored ice cubes. After I witnessed a bartender grabbing an emptied martini glass and wiping the cubes on his pants before chucking them into the "hey! use these ..they are clean jar" I have never been back.
