Help a poor Los Angeles hound visiting Baltimore and DC

If you are staying around the Inner Harbor, you could easily walk to Federal Hill, Lexington Market, Little Italy, and Fells Point (a longer walk but not out of the question - I've done it a few times). The MARC train is really good, though it doesn't operate on the weekends. It will take you to Union Station in DC.

But they won't have a car. For chain's you don't have, try Nando's Peri Peri and BGR Joiint and Taylor Gourmet all in DC.

Half smokes are nothing special. Sure, they're local, but they are underwhelming.

Without a car, getting to Matthew's Pizza may be difficult and while quaint, is just okay. Go to Faidley's and have a crab cake.

Del Ray, Alexandria neighborhood destinations

Glad you like Del Ray Cafe. I'm looking forward to trying it. As an Angeleno, I prefer the Mexican places far down route one. I like Los Tios well enough and the service is great but it's not as good as El Charrito Caminante.

Del Ray, Alexandria neighborhood destinations

Having tasted the samples at the new Del ray Cafe, I think it's going to be really good once it gets open.

Saw the review of Del Ray Pizzeria. The salad I had was really great, bu tthe pizza was a joke. The chef says that most of their suppliers are small time - that's if you count by supplier. Still, a big Sysco Systems truck shows up on their door step nearly every day according to my wife, who sees it drive past and park.

There is a new restaurant that should be very good, Del Ray Cafe. It will be a French restaurant. Los Tios is fine, but it is in no way the best Mexican restaurant in the area. Del Ray Pizzeria is atrocious. They don't even make their own crusts (despite their claims otherwise). Their salads are pretty good though. The Osteria is not as good as its sister restaurant, La Strade, which is great.

Fresh tamales in London

If you can get the ingredients (masa and corn husks), it's not that difficult to make them (especially if you have 3 people). You can stuff them with practically anything and look on youtube for videos about constructing them. You do need a hefty sized steamer. We make about 50 or so at a time every New Year's Eve.

Mosaic District opening Fall 2012 in Merrifield, VA

The Mario's is at the shopping center with the H-Mart. Cafe Raouche in the same shopping center has pretty good Lebanese food.

advice needed--Mexican in DC

I don't know what you are referring to as queso. If you want Mexican queso, most of the supermarkets sell a variety of Mexican cheeses. For my money, the best Mexican food in the District is at Oyamel. If you're getting tacos, it won't be expensive. There are other places that also do a good job, but I haven't been to any of them in a few years, so I can't vouch for them. The best Mexican food in the area is in Bladensburg/Riverdale, MD, down Route 1 in Virginia and at El Charrito Caminante in Arlington.

Capitol HIll with kids

The parking around Eastern Market isn't so bad if you're a local (and I mean a Hill local and know the layout). Otherwise, there really isn't a reason to drive in DC. Take the metro and save yourself some headaches.

Peregrine Espresso at Eastern Market is crazy good.

Capitol HIll with kids

I've been to Zaytinya with a picky little kid. He was happy there.

Looking for family run great Mexican restaurant

And you can get some pretty fine al pastor at places like Taqueria Tres Reyes, which is on Kenilworth Ave. The parallel road is Edmonston Road and I believe La Placita, which is on Edmonston Road does a fine al pastor, with the pineapple and all.

Looking for family run great Mexican restaurant

Second Tacos el Costalila - and I'm from L.A. Also, try their sopes! Super yummy. The two areas with the highest concentration of authentic Mexican food (where you can get goat, tongue, organ meats, nopales and the like) are down Rte 1 in Virginia and in the Riverdale/Bladensburg area in Maryland. There are more places in Riverdale/Bladensburg, places like Taqueria Tres Reyes II and others on a back road that parallels the main road. At the Maryland places, they may not even speak English.

Any good German food?

If I'm not mistaken, the chef of Cosmopolitan worked for years at a pretty good restaurant in Germany before moving to the US.

Alexandria, VA suggestions?

Pizzeria Paradiso is a good option. It is at the foot of King Street. Even further down at the base of King Street is Mai Thai. For budget but also good, go to Red Mai, which is pan-Asian place. That is my go to place for a cheap lunch.

new places in arlington and falls church

Went to Cafe Rios last week and won't go back. 1) It just isn't that tasty. I had a wet burrito that was barely warmed up under a heat lamp. 2) What's with the staff yelling unintelligbly every so often when customers order something. I never figured out what they were yelling or why. It was just annoying. I feel sorry for the staff to have to do that. They do that at Homemade Pizza when someone gets a free pizza.

Mexican in DC

I agree with you because I don't like them, but they are often packed so who am I to say that they shouldn't enjoy what they obviously are enjoying. The standards for Mexican Food is not that high around here. It has improved somewhat since the late 80s, but not by much. However, unlike the late 80s, there are now actual Mexican places that are oriented towards serving Mexicans (you don't put liver, buche or carnaza tacos on your menu to attract novices).

Mexican in DC

I don't have a problem with Americanized foods as long as they are good. Isn't most every cuisine a fusion? French fries are a fusion of Meso-American and Belgian. Pizza with tomato sauce is a fusion of Meso-American and Italian. If you like the food at a restaurant, no need to stop going or feel bad about it. You should even extol the virtues you see in it to others on this site. However, when you are from LA and looking to rekindle a taste memory, then I am always disappointed by the overly Salvadoran mexican places.

Wet Burrito

Los Tios is okay, but not fantastic. Unfortunately, the wet burrito isn't that popular around here. It's what I grew up with. The idea of eating a burrito without a knife and fork was absurd in LA in the 70s and 80s.

Oyamel is good, but better is to stay in LA and eat at Monte Alban.

Just over the bridge from Georgetown is Ray's Hell Burger, one of the best hamburger places in the country. I think it really is special.

If money is not much of an object, then you could go to Central, Brasserie Beck, or Kincaid's. Eastern Market is nice, but half smokes are a local specialty that is really not that special. It is to a good bratwurst what Pabst Blue Ribbon is to beer.

Oh, I think it is really easy to screw up an omelet, which is why I rarely order them at a diner. I just think that Table Talk and the Royal are blah, not bad, but I never think about going there. The diner is next to El Custatleco on Glebe Road in Arlington where the Giant. It's not fanstatic, but I enjoyed it the time I went. I would go back there, but we have breakfast pretty well covered at home, so there isn't much need for going out for it.

Royal Diner and Table Talk are pretty blah. There's a Greek diner in a shopping center on Glebe Road (just a little out of the way) that isn't bad.

In Alexandria, try Buzz or Misha's. They're easy to get to and have good cofee and pastries.

Where to Buy Frisee?

If you have an H Mart, or another Korean grocer, you have a good chance of finding it there. My local H Mart has it.

Tacos el Costalilla

Eating tacos and sopes can never be a rut. It's a goal.
