Higher prices at prime times?

Channel 2 ran a story a few days ago saying some restaurants are considering charging a premium for prime time. Sort of the reverse of early bird specials. Are any restaurants actually doing this? Has anyone experienced it?

Food Network Star: "Pilot Greenlights" (7/15/2012) [*SPOILERS*]

I think Justin and Martie are the most talented over all. I'd watch Justin's show for the Alton-Justin Oedipal drama. Michelle seems like a nice person but I'm not sure that New England cooking is enough of a draw.

Indoor "grilling"

I thought I'd try it when I'm just cooking for myself, in case it doesn't work. I thought I'd try a pork chop. Thanks for your help.

Indoor "grilling"

I live in a Manhattan apartment with no outdoor space, so real grilling is never an option. I saw someone on "Food Network Star" a couple of weeks ago put wood chips in a foil pouch while cooking indoors on a ridged grill pan. Would that work? I am thinking of trying it.

Any comments on 'The Sandwich King' first episode?

I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it but I saw a few minutes and I thought Jeff was pretty good. The gyro looked like something I would want to eat and his instructions seemed clear.

Ree Drummond, aka The Pioneer Woman, gets her own show

I agree. I enjoy her blog because of her sense of humor but that didn't come across much in the show.

Masterchef 8/1 spoilers

I was wonding about the recipes too.
Meanwhile I am still scratching my head over the premise that it's so incredibly difficult to make a cheese souffle. I'm no master chef but I've made plenty of cheese souffles over the years _ with a recipe _ and they've always turned out fine.

Trader Joes... Please, just ring up my groceries.

I was the sour apple the other day. The checkout guy wanted to know in considerable detail how my weekend was going. I told him I'd gone to visiting day at my daughter's summer camp and he wanted to have a whole long disccussion about the merits of summer camp. I just wanted to get my groceries and go, but I was trying not to be openly rude. I usually appreciate the TJ friendliness but sometimes it's a bit much.

Which FoodNetwork Hosts/Shows Do You Miss?

"Fresh Food Fast" seems not bad. The recipes are things I would make. I wouldn't bother to watch the other one. I skip all the shows that visit restaurants in various cities.

Which FoodNetwork Hosts/Shows Do You Miss?

Ah. I'm not usually home at 11 a.m. and I don't have DVR, TiVO etc.

What are you baking these days? July 2011, Part 2 [old]

Looks good!
I cranked the oven up to 475 and baked a Lahey loaf yesterday even though it was around 90 and I have no AC. Next I'm thinking of trying the rhubarb almond bars on this site. Has anyone made those?

Which FoodNetwork Hosts/Shows Do You Miss?

I REALLY miss "Good Eats!" They don't even show reruns. And I miss Sara Moulton and Mario. I do often catch "Two Fat Ladies" on the Cooking Channel.

That's a good point about Vic. He looks tough but he clearly is able to relate to women. Whereas Chris and Jeff, not so much. They both insisted on those stupid themes that would not appeal to 99 percent of Food Network's female viewers.

I'll watch at least once. Her blog is funny but being funny on TV is a whole different kettle of fish.

I agree that Penny gets worse every episode. If you want to attack everyone, OK, but then acting like you're the victim?
I'm glad they gave Justin-with-the-glasses the ax. I liked him at first. But in retrospect I guess I just liked the glasses. He was too bizarre last night. As an introvert myself, I found it painful to watch an introvert trying to turn himself into another Guy Fieri. As if we even needed the first one!

Celebrity (royal) cooking class - Montreal

From the photos, it appeared that no one told Kate to tie back her long hair. A food service faux pas.

I think Food Network screwed up. The TV listings had it as a 60-minute show but it was 90 minutes.

To each his own. I can't stand to watch any of the "Real Housewives" shows for half a minute but I thought this was pretty good.

Rocco's Dinner Party

I agree. It was better than I expected. I liked the absence of mandatory ingredients a la "Chopped." Just a straightforward assignment to prepare a lovely dinner. I will probably watch it again.

I agree that Alicia had to go. But I'm sorry that Penny and the boys beat the all-girl team. I think they had an advantage with Robert Irvine in charge instead of Duff. Irvine is used to whipping people into shape and getting them to focus. It's what he does on his show. His team was on track to lose before he stepped in.

EATALY MANHATTAN--please list your "finds" here

Sounds yummy. Also from the meat department, I got some veal pounded thin for scallopini by the cute butch butcher girl. Very good.

And as far as produce, it seems to me that some of it is reasonably priced and some is way overpriced. I bought a little cantaloupe-like melon because it smelled like absolute heaven but when I got it home and cut into it, it tasted like any other melon. And it was $7.

Do you pack your own food when you go...

But if you live in New York City and don't have a car and take the bus to Six Flags, you have no place to stash a cooler. It's either eat their overpriced food or try to smuggle some in.

I don't think the Food Network has any intention of picking Penny. But her scheming and plotting makes her fun to root against and keeps me watching this show. Now that the NBA finals are over and I don't have LeBron to hate.

Food Network Star Episode 2 (spoilers)

I don't see a thread so I'll start. I enjoyed last night's show. Penny the Villain makes for a fun story line. She's Macchiavellian. Juba had to go. He didn't once utter a complete sentence in a camera challenge. And Katie _ so annoying with that perma-smile. Glad to see her gone. Will Alicia cry every single time?

Yellow Onion vs Sweet Onion

I use sweet onions for salads and sandwiches. I never cook with them unless I run out of every other kind of onion.
