AwesTRUCK 2012 - Food truck awards/event/party -Sept 9

absolutely,
It's safe to say that people are getting a little tired of lineups and crowded events, so we set a maximum # of guests to keep it comfortable and manageable. also added the vip option so people dont have to worry about pulling out their wallets at the event (speeds up the lines, and trucks are ready to pump out the food).

Plus we want to thank everyone for waiting in the lines at previous events etc etc. So we'll be giving away 100 general admission via the facebook/twitter channels.
So basically it will be a 'free' ticket that people can grab via the ticket page.
We'll chunk it off tomorrow and friday to try and make it as fair as possible. For eg, we'll release a batch of freebies tomorrow at 10am, then probably some in the afternoon, evening, and again on friday. etc etc. This way it evens the flow.

VIP giveaway will also work the same way. free ticket (1 per person) on the ticket page, spread between friday and monday or something.
If you want the freebies, your best bet is to watch the #awestruck2012 hashtag on twitter, or facebook.

hope that helps.
in terms of numbers, VIP will be smaller than the brick works picnic. like i said, I'm going for comfort here. plenty of vendors, small lines, fast moving.

AwesTRUCK 2012 - Food truck awards/event/party -Sept 9

It's a ticketed event because we're having it at the brick works site.
Limited number of tickets (trust me, it will be a lot less than what you're used to at street food events). event is designed to address the line issues.

The $60 ticket is exactly what it is. See the menus on the food truck eats site? you can eat from the top 8 trucks for 2 hours AND the 8 popups that we haven't announced yet, and have some drinks. It will also be a limited number of people for vip.

yes we're giving away vip tickets
yes we're giving away 100 general admission tickets

In Miami (SoBe area) April 23-26th with 3 foodies

Thanks for all the help guys. Updated the pegs with your suggestions, we've got a lot, and hopefully we make a dent.
If anyone is going to the cutler street food event or the one in wynwood tomorrow, we will be there.

thanks again.

Thanks frodnesor, will keep Ola in mind, and yes I meant D. Rodriguez Cuba. Going to book Timo now based on your rec.
We're staying at the Carlton, these places were suggested by someone from Sunny Isles, so hence the close proximity.

Yeah I think we're going to skip Tony Chan's. The fact that shark fin and sea bass is on the menu isn't sitting well with us. thanks tpigeon

Thanks guys, we're narrowing down our list best we can, and we will have a car for the entire trip, so driving around shouldn' t be an issue.

It looks like we are doing NAOE after all.
Can anyone comment on Tony Chan's and these places?
De Rodriguez Cuba
Timos Restaurant
Acqualina Resort and Spa
Sole on the Ocean, new trending hotel
State Park, Oleta
Spanish Monetary
H Restaurant

Much appreciated. Can't wait. The food truck issue is really hot in Toronto right now, so would be great to get some perspective on it.

Too bad about Panther coffee, I'll make a note on the map.

Thanks Guys!.
Yeah I see that one of my collaborators has added more places on the map, including Naoe!.

I meant to mention that the food truck pegs are merely there for reference so we know not to forget about them, we'll look them up for current info of course

Added shake shack (never been), jimmy's to the list, Red light, Sugarcane, Michy's and Sra as well, they look great. Thanks for the tips. By looking at the sites, I can say that this is exactly the stuff we were looking for.

Is Joe's Stone crabs really worth it? seems like an overly tourist thing to do.

If you're ever in Toronto, please look me up on spotlighttoronto.com and i will return the favour.

Hey everyone,

Been reading the board to catch up on where to eat when 4 of us are in SoBe for 4 days next weekend.
It's our first time in Miami, and we're all big foodies/writers from Toronto, Canada.
Was wondering if you can help us find some good eats.
Here's the map I've put together with a lot of help from Jackie at Michael's Genuine Kitchen.
http://sptl.co/gMFb0d

We've all dined at top michelin star restaurants, and would prefer to skip those in Miami and go for some authentic bites and unique experiences.

Am I missing any restaurants on that list that you think we should check out?
For a splurge night, two in group wanted to consider the new Boulud place. http://lifeandtimes.com/dishing-with-...

Thanks a lot guys.

Oliver & Bonacini @ Bell Lightbox

There is a free signal, but not sure it is O&B. If they were planning to have free access, I'm guessing it will probably in the next few days.

Place looks very much like dean and deluca in nyc.
Coffee was great, the fresh local fruit juices were fantastic.
It's a sit down place with plenty of seating high low, etc.
There is a take out area at the end which will feature the menu, eco containers, etc. The sandwich is honestly the best I have had, and am craving it already just a few hours later.

they're even serving a new bubbly from Cavesprings, made for O&B, titled Sparkle and Buzz. good prices on drinks, menu, etc.

Graze the Bench?

Yes, the $25 pass gets you your first full glass of wine and food pairing. Subsequent glasses of wine are $7, and food etc.
But if you want to taste new releases, they're subject to the normal rules of the winery.
Which means that some will charge $1-3, and waive the fee if you buy something, or some may not charge at all.

Wine 101 offered by LCBO?

It's a stationed event that takes you through the some very basic principles of wine. Distinguishing between varietals, tasting notes.
If Ed Madronich (Flat Rock Cellars/WCO) is there, which he usually is, its very informative.

2010 closings

The Olson's are no longer at Olson Foods in St David's.
New project underway, part of which involves one of the Harber brothers form Ravine Vineyard next door (Paul) taking over the kitchen at the Olson shack. The pastry chef is still there, place will slowly evolve back to providing food/wine pairings.
Paul just game back from interning at Michelin star restaurants in Germany (Statdlander sent him to his mentor)
There are some crazy things planned at Ravine in 2010. Should be excellent.

School Bakery & Cafe

I haven't seen much mention of this place here..so here's my micro review.

School has been open for about 2 1/2 weeks now (officially) and I've had the chance to stop by a few times for lunch/brunch.

The atmosphere is very casual, the place is full decked out in the school theme. The tiny details are a lot of fun to pick out, and overall the staff seem quite relaxed except for a few oddities here and there.
First time, I waited 15 minutes for a table, Sunday, around noon.
Second and third time no waits, once on sunday at the same time and another during the week.

Brunch is served from 10am, and every day (they're open from 8am-7pm during the week), Brad moore rings the school bell at 3:30 to signal 'detention' aka the martini rush.
Cocktails are creative but very expensive for a cafe ($12). Be weary of giving full control to the bartender. A glass of vodka and orange juice does not make a $12 cocktail. The 'hot for teacher cocktail' drink on the other hand, has a way of transporting you to a Caribbean beach with one sip. Must be the high tequila content.....

The menu focuses on classic breakfast/lunch dishes with interesting kicks. Sometimes the kick is a spice, sometimes its a substitution for ingredients (cheese in the french toast)...very interesting from what I've tasted so far. Also quite affordable.

hits;
grapefruit brulee - very plain and wonderful, great with the drinks $5
cheesy french toast - very European, huge portions, absolutely delicious $10
cinnamon french toast - also delicious but plenty sweeter $10
chipotle cheese biscuit - spicy tender biscuits with a balanced portion of bacon and chicken $8
sbc benny - interesting kick on eggs benni with the chipolte biscuit again and spices $10
sbc burger - $13, really tasty burger loaded with gruyere and fresh guacamole
scones! - very tasty selection of lemon/maple syrup/cardamom. All very good, the maple syrup being the sweetest of the bunch.
pastries - the brownies, the cupcakes, and the tiny cookies are great. All cheap too, $1-2

misses;
.jerk sandwich was bland and the bun was cold enough to hurt my teeth. $10
.cocktails could use some work (they're more expensive than most items on the menu)

Service is quite attentive and efficient, minor kinks here and here but this is a new place.
they're closed on saturdays for private events.
most dishes are under $13

Spice Route or Kultura

Honestly, my suggestion would be to go somewhere else altogether. Only go to Spice route for drinks afterwards as drinks are ridiculously cheap before 10pm and it is a nice looking place. (kultura on the other hand is a ripoff for drinks, and I have no idea who likes spending up to $18 for a champagne martini)
