Duck legs

Hanging out in Vancouver for a few days and so far my search for duck legs has come up emtpy. Lots of whole ducks but I just want the legs. Tried T&T and a few other chinese markets but no luck. Any ideas?

Where 2 buy: COCONUT oil

Richardsons food group in Nanaimo sells coconut and palm oil in 16 litre pails for the bakery industry. You could also try Sysco in Victoria

propane barbequea

Take along a small magnet with you. It the bbq is made of good stainless steel the magnet will not stick. It it is cheap or look alike it will most definitely stick

Stock making

Hey thanks a bunch for this info. Should be over there before xmas so will check it out. Was given a demi glace paste from the gourmet warehouse but haven't tried it out yet.

Looking for great bread in Vancouver

I have been baking bread in my BBQ for a while now using fire bricks (normally used in wood stoves). Cheap, indestructible and the bread has an amazing crust.

Dinner in comox / courtney ?

My wife and I had one of the more memorable meals in Courtenay last year at locals http://www.localscomoxvalley.com/Home... .
I raved about it so much that many of our friends also dined there. All said that it was worth the drive from Nanaimo.
The location is a bit weird as it is in the corner of a strip mall but once inside you can soon forget what the outside looks like. As the name suggests they try and source all their food locally. The night we were there I had a pork dish and literally wiped the plate clean as the reduction sauce was like manna from heaven. The chai creme brulee was so good we jokingly asked if they sold it by the gallon to go!

Stock making

Where is Beefway located please? We only have Fairway markets here on the island which I would consider to be Asian but they are very expensive.

Stock making

I live on Vancouver Island and would like to find an affordable source for beef/veal bones for stock making. I ocasionaly visit Vancouver and have a good source for chicken parts for soup making at Granville Island. All the stores I have checked out so far on the island are very expensive. Watching Chucks day off on TFN this guy uses veal stock like it was tap water! Appreciate any help

Does anyone use slate/tiles as plates?

This post made me realise that I haven't used my ceramic glazed tile plates in a long time. I bought them years ago from Home Depot. They are black and measure 11" x 8". I used to use them for sushi and any food that just needed chopsticks or a fork. Makes a change from normal tableware of which I have a cupboard full and overflowing. As far as any toxins in the material they are ceramic and sealed. Probably more chance of being run over by a car than developing some awful medical condition from using the tiles every now and again!

Please help with where to eat with a baby and a vegetarian for upcoming trip to Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo and Tofino

I posted this a few days ago in another thread but as it seems relevant will post it again here.

I have lived in Nanaimo a long time and we have never been overwhelmed with good places to eat. However I would recommend Huong Lan on Bowen Road for Vietnamese food. It is hard to get in at lunchtime so suggest evenings. Asteras greek taverna on Wesley Street is always spot on. On the same street is the Wesley Street cafe which I have not been to in a while but hear very good things about. Crow and Gate pub in Cedar is great if the sun is shining and you can sit outside. Longwood pub is great beer but the food is a bit lacking at times. Mahle house also in Cedar is undergoing management changes and apparently the menu has changed significantly. We are going there in a couple of weeks so will have more info then. Apparently they are offering a three course meal for $30.
PS
Longwood pub has a restaurant upstairs so children are allowed in. Crow and gate is my local and as much as they have tried to accomodate children outside in the summer the bureaucrats still do not like it..
Hope you enjoy your visit.

Scandalous Restaurant Review Prompts the Question: Is Good Service Dead?

Just finished reading Bourdain's chapter on Richman. As Snowpea said a bit over the top but it certainly gives one a better idea of who the man is. He certainly comes across as a mean and vindictive character. So I would take his comments with the proverbial grain of salt.
