Come Spring Cafe: Union Maine (plus two other local places)

Thumbs up on Come Spring Cafe -- great breakfast . No fancy here just good cooking. Lunch is pretty good as well. Another one of those hidden gems.

Primo in Maine

It is unfortunate that your wife had an unpleasant experience. As MCM pointed out , telling your waitperson that she was a vegetarian probably could have circumvented this situation. As for the behavior of your waitperson -- may I suggest that informing the host ( which may have or have not been Price, co-owner) of the situation lends itself to correcting such attitudes. As to the loud party - I assume you were in the bar area -- people do have fun there, The downstairs dining room is a bit more formal and perhaps more to your liking.

Just Barb's - Stockton Springs, Maine

The better half and I were in Bucksport this morning so we stopped in at Barb's for lunch on the way home. Place was packed. I am happy to report that both the clam and haddock chow'da was excellent . We had clam baskets and it was all I could do to eat mine, cause I was not going to leave even one. So for those of you who have not experienced this little gem - don't drive by. I like the sign out front " The Best Kept Secret in Waldo County" its true !

Two sub-par experiences in MidCoast ME.

There is an interesting review of the Slipway in the Portland Press Herald this morning. The review tracks closely with the comments here regarding service. Overall a good review.

Two sub-par experiences in MidCoast ME.

I was there last week, for the 4th time, two dinner and two lunches. I truly enjoy the "lightly fried" approach Scott has with seafood and its my go to spot for haddock. I agree with MCM regarding the service problem. The waitstaff could do with a little training . The Slipway is not alone in this regard I have noticed more and more spotty service this summer. The new "LaBellaVita" at the Samoset could do with some serious training. As for the Pearl -- well , it's the Pearl. Normally if one is looking for restaurant information and cannot find a particular spot here , try the Trip Advisor -- the Pearl has been scoured there.

Belfast, Maine. Delvino's Grill & Pasta House

I heard about this last week and saw no reference to it here on Chowhound so we took a chance at it last night. They have been in business just over a year and appear to have become quite poplular. I could see and taste why. Small storefront, reminded me of Besca, but charming. No pretense here - downhome comfortable. Waitstaff is welcoming and knowledgeable, very pleasant. The better half and I are food grazers and eat eveything together so we began. Crusty Italian bread and nice oil are basic.
Fried ravioli( three cheese with jalapeno) , baked brie with fruit and baguette. Both were excellent.
Next eggplant parm and prosciutto/asparagus saute - both a treat. I, being a sucker for prosciutto , was delighted. Both served with angel hair pasta. Finish with a nice creamy cheesecake drizzled with dark chocolate.

We will return -- I would recommend if you are in the area or traveling through. Open 11AM until 8'ish, right on Main street.

A Taco Truck in Downeast Maine!?

Add to the list --- Marko Loco's Crazy Good Food Mex-style. Parked in Camden Village last night. I noticed an article in the Village Soup where this would be operating in Camden. No idea abut the food.

Archer's on the Pier

I would agree with fishmantwo. Re-visiting a new restaurant is often a good idea -- all have start-up problems that require fine tuning. As for Archers, I have been there three times and at this point I see no reason to return other than perhaps a drink on the deck to enjoy the view. Everyone has a different palate and standards of food preparation which influences their return participation. As for me -- its not my idea of "fine dining where the locals go" as advertised.

An Italian experience at the Samoset

Lunch today with the better half. For starters - first impressions. Decor tastefully done and attention to detail is evident in both the lounge and dining room. Open, lots of light - views to the bay only add to the ambiance. We were there from 12:30PM to 2:15 or so -- they were reasonably busy for a rainy day. The good stuff - - - her, a glass of Tiamo Pinot Grigio , me -- the Rocca Delle Macie Chianti. Antipasti, we shared the Crispy Calamari with Zucchini - lovely -- nicely done with the addition of red and green peppers - the pomodoro sauces was especially nice . For our mains the better half chose the Pan Roasted Wild Salmon and I , the Pappardelle Farnese. The boss gave the salmon the big thumbs up and I could not decide whether to eat the braised beef ragu or " sleep ' with it ! Both of us gave our dishes a really big " salude". Finishing with Chocolate Budino for her and I an Expresso with Frangelico on the rocks. Other points --- the bread is freshly made and absolutely superb with a nice bowl of olive oil. Our waiter was Kyle whose presence was attentive but not obtrusive - the mark of one who has the special touch. I rated the restaurant 4/5 stars simply as we have not have dinner there yet --- to be continued next Friday night. In my opinion this new addition to the Mid-coast food scene will be a welcomed addition to both the vistors and locals alike. Bon Appetito !!

Archer's on the Pier

The boss ( wife) and I dropped by last Sunday afternoon to see what Archer's had to offer. We just had snack stuff -- clam chowder which was watery and seriously not fit to eat. Haddock cakes which turned out to be lumpy mashed potatoes fried with no trace nor taste of Haddock. We sent that back as well. I had lobster roll , she had crab roll. Lobster was chopped so finely that once mayo was added it was pretty much mush. Her crab roll was similar in texture. I was sad to see a lot of clowning by the bartender which was loud and disturbing. Bottom line for us --- Shooley's experience track right along with ours . I had hoped for better but it simply was Boathouse redux -- too bad its a nice venue. We are looking forward to the Slipway visit soon.

What Is Missing in Mid Coast Maine

Chinese of course ! A real Deli and Mexican food would cause the food God's to smile.
Seriously, I am so tired of driving away from home base to find that which appears to be ignored in the Camden/Rockland area. Hope springs eternal. :)

Opinions of the Lobster Pound in Lincolnville , Maine ?

Anyone eaten there recently - ?

Camden/Rockland (ME) August 2008

The Big Fish Grill is worth a try ---- linguini and little neck clams are a treat. The calamari is super. Homemade tarter here is spot on.

Driving thru Maine Restaurants

I agree regarding "The Edge" -- at best it is a wannabe. I would bypass "Marcels" as well. OK for brunch on Sunday morn -- but dinner is "amature hour". I had dinner at Primo last Friday night -- all was well. I saw some slippage here as well last season but no sign of it now.

Habanero Grill, Rockport (ME): Don't bother

We locals call it Habanuttin -- pass this one by.

Dinner at Youngstown Inn, Lincolnville, Me

Anyone been there lately? comments regarding food / wine ??

Off-season restaurants in Camden, ME?

Primo's closed on Jan 9th for the season.
