Austin Food & Wine Festival

Okay, I'm not too proud to say....holy smokes, what happened to Austin that this is even considered as anything but absolutely-positively Nuuuuuuts? C'mon - this would not have been tolerated a few years ago.

Same situation happened to me this weekend. Went to Hoppdoddys on Anderson and there was "a little" line outside...k...and 15 minutes later we were admitted inside to find a line of 30. Seriously?! for a BURGER?! No-no-no-noooo.
What have we become where we will put up with this nonsense? Reminds me of the the movie where the Californian will drive the block to wait in line. will...not...do.

Tomo on Palmer...any new reviews & is it still open? Website down.

I would suggest Afin (in the old korea garden location across from the yellow rose). They have an excellent happy hour including a dish very simular to the above, and everything I've had has been fresh and creative, staff is attentave and they've really done wonders with the difficult space.

Hungry for Fajitas

Far as I know, I think they are. I saw a whole bunch of people milling around outside this weekend.

Visiting from California

I would think Styles Switch meets your criteria perfectly. Great bbq, priced about like everyone else, but unlike the others, can handle the volume quite well.

Chile Rellenos in Austin

Actually, you can get it anytime...and it is quite good.

Chile Rellenos in Austin

I read it years ago and remember thinking he had some misses and some hits. I'll have to re-read it again. Thanks for the reminder.

Holy cow, ya'll. I posted that in 2002!!! That just scares me to no end...

and so far, the closest to my heart so far is Los Pinos in Hudson Bend.

I'd suggest Frans over Hopdaddys. Old school burger, vs gourmet only blocks apart

Chowhound Dinner Group

I'm in. Only restriction is my new job requires an early night.

New Hot Pot Place on Anderson

I went a couple of weeks ago and forgot to post. I was completely unimpressed. We actually asked extra-extra spicy and it was bland-bland-bland...and gave me heartburn. Nope. Not with Madam Mam's so close.

Austin Burger Smackdown!

Well, I can tell you Cat Mountian has fallen far and fast. Last night

That being said, my favorite low scale is Frans - consisant, old school, greasy goodness. Two weekends ago

Upscale is the hickory buger at Cover 3 - actually comes out medium rare, flavor bomb and the grilled leeks and homemade pickles just send it over the top...plus the fries with sanmarillo (can anyone give me the recipe for this!?!?) makes it worth every penny. Last weekend.

ya know, I really do love the Chuychanga with tons of tomatillo sauce and every guy I've suggested the steak burrito or the Elvis Chicken has loved it...plus it's just a fun place. Love the patio up north. I just can't apologize for loving Chuy's. Is it fine dining? Of course not. Is it unique to Texas? Well, yes.

Any good Greek food in Austin?

Niko's?

Ever since they took off the pesto pizza (again!...no worries, all. I won't start that war again), we just go and have beer or the super-yummy beer milkshake.

One night in Austin (tonight!) Where to hide from sxsw for quiet dinner and drinks?

On such a nice night and being where you are, I'd to Fabi & Rosi and have your coffee over at Mozart's.

Hard Hat Vol IX

There's a Popeye's there?! Sorry, but what a guilty pleasure. If I could get it on my way home to go....

Hard Hat Vol IX

My new job is just down the block. I surely don't know this area one...little...bit. Suggestions?

"Supper" Barbecue?

Actually, their wings are my favorite. I personally think they're the best in town...a plus is that nice back patio, and schooners of Shiner.

Uchiko isn't closing tonight at their regular time and is offering a 10:00 seating...one would assume to re-watch the finale.

Austin Food and Wine Festival- worth going to?

More power to ya...

They're both excellent. I favor Uchiko because it's in my neck of the woods and "seems" less loud.

Barbecue Trip Report (Long)

Yeah, for a hound like me, it means a lot too. I went ahead and made a reservation. I figure I can cancel it. I'm waffling. I mean, Uchiko is ALWAYS at capacity anyway; right?

For a first-time poster, you sure are jazzed...just sayin'

...and now with Paul sooo close to winning! Go Paul!

Austin Food and Wine Festival- worth going to?

Then this event is absolutely not for you. Although with the price of admission being so high...nah; really think you'd end up with a luke-warm experience on a price point that should be a "super-wow". I think your money's better spent going to a nice restaurant.

Austin Food and Wine Festival- worth going to?

I went once. Personally, I felt the lines were too long for nibbles (although what I had was quite good) and it's crazy-expensive now. Way to rich for my blood.

Top Chef Texas Finale Part 1 - Ep. #16 - 02/22/12 (Spoilers)

There go my chances of getting a reservation on my bday. SXSW and this will make it next to impossible.

Barbecue Trip Report (Long)

All very good questions. Firstly, welcome to "the land of the bland". I live in NW Austin (just down the street from where you'll be staying, 2222/360). Yes, you are far enough away. You should be just fine. That being said, your dining selections aren't as exciting up here.

Yes, it's my understanding that the lite rail will be running extended hours during SXSW, so you can make the quick drive down 183 to the Lamar station and go straight to all the hubub and back. I'm sure they'll have a schedule posted. I've never been on it, but I think it would be a most excellent option.

Top Chef Texas Finale Part 1 - Ep. #16 - 02/22/12 (Spoilers)

I wish I had been given that option. Hell, I wish I had been given that option after high school. College was my only option and that didn't pan out so well...

Barbecue Trip Report (Long)

I'm an old curmudgeon, too, I guess. My birthday falls right in the middle of the whole rodeo/SXSW/Basketball mayhem and I end up never going out to dinner for it, because all of my favorite places seem to be overtaxed and the food and service just disappoints. It's a total bummer, cuz it's damnear impossible to get husband downtown/out otherwise.
