Anyone know where I can pick up good saurkraut? Preferably in Vancouver proper? Thanks

newcomer seeking advice

I ate at Taste Of Ceylon. Service was slow, the place is hole in the wall but I enjoyed the food. Husband and wife run. I have no qualms recommending it but have don't expect fast service.

Good restaurants in vicinity of P.N.E?

That would be great! There's nothing like that in the area

FYI- the teriyaki bowl place was solid but it's now closed. There is a different sushi restaurant there now.

Izakaya help

Excellent tip about the food carts on Sundays at the Waldord.

As for the night market, granted I haven't been for a few years, but quibbling about whether the food is top notch or not (it definitely isn't- it's street food) is beside the point. As grayelf points out, it's the whole experience, the fun of looking from stall to stall picking out the food that looks good, getting a ridiculously big bubble tea that you know is terrible for you but somehow hits the spot. The food isn't even that cheap but be prepared to pay $20-30/person and you will have a chance to fill up and hopefully have some fun :)

BC allows BYOW (Bring your own wine) in restaurants effective today

I'm personally not too concerned about servers making less money. I can barely afford to eat out as it is.

Izakaya help

The food trucks are OK, but I'd only eat them for lunch personally. I don't even think they are usually open late enough for dinner.

If you are going to the night market, may as well save your appetite, the only reason to go there is to eat really.

brew pub with good food

You nailed it flowbee.

I think Alibi Room is the best choice as well, but I don't think they do reservations for more than 10 people. The food probably isn't quite chow-worthy but the beer selection is quite superb.

Asian Bender this Weekend in YVR and Richmond

A word of warning: popular restaurants in Richmond tend to be VERY busy on the weekend. Best to pick your restaurant ahead and show up early (before opening), especially if you have a kid and don't want to wait. Also, parking can be horrendous.

One of the most western friendly Shanghainese places I've found is Dinesty, across from Top Shanghai on Acroyd. The English on the menu is good, the place is pretty nice inside and the food is good to my non-expert palate.

My wife is Chinese and her family always goes to Shiang Garden in Richmond for Dim Sum. I believe they give a 10% discount before 11am. Anyways I bring my coworkers there sometimes and they love it.

Best ramen in Vancouver?

One more vote for Santouka. It's a bit more expensive than most of the other ramen places but worth it IMO.

Best breakfast joint?

The Red Wagon is near my place, and it's usually quite busy. I think the food is decent, but I don't go often because I don't like heavy food first thing in the morning. The pulled pork pancakes are awesome but I need a nap after...

My wife loves Cafe Medina for breakfast. We usually get a waffle and share something else, the food is delicious and not too filling. It's quite busy though so we usually show up before it opens, easier to find parking earlier as well.

Gastown, Yaletown restaurant - Foodie quality, regular portions, 20 ppl

I think Chambar would be a very good bet. The food quality is high and the atmosphere is nice. Why not?

anyone tried James Chinese on Hastings near Slocan?

Sweet can't wait to try it. Thank god for this site, some places I'm just not comfortable being a trailblazer with.

On a side note, there's another new chinese restaurant in the area called "Cindy's" which just opened up at Nanaimo and 2nd, used to be a restaurant called Jaguar something.

What are you enjoying at Vancouver street food carts?

I tried Re-Up twice. The first time I really liked it, the second time for some reason not so much. Not sure if it was me or them.

Little Mountain Coffee - a neighbourhood gem - others like it?

I stumbled onto LMC a little while ago, and while for me the ambience is nothing special, just average, I did enjoy the coffee and as noted the donuts are reasonably priced and decent.

Thanks for reminding me of Italia Bakery YVRChow. I live in the area but I didn't realize they serve coffee. For an area with a traditionally large Italian population, there is a surprising lack of decent cafes in the area- Laughing Bean seems to be the most popular, but I don't really dig it, although I can't really put my finger on why.

Men's Night Suggestions - Downtown

St. Augustine's is right up there for me as well- I love how they have computer screens showing you how much beer is left in each cask, even in the bathroom! Although overall I give the nod to the Alibi Room because it's a nicer space

Men's Night Suggestions - Downtown

I like the Alibi Room. The food is pretty good, and the beer selection is one of the best in the city. Lively, somewhat raucous atmosphere on the weekend as well.

Rec's for good-value Korean BBQ, central Vancouver

I've been to that Choon ha Choo Dong place a few times, and enjoyed it. It seems like a real mom n pop type place with the kids serving. Food is reasonable and tasty enough, mind you I'm no expert on Korean food. A good lunch place.

3 day visit to Vancouver (1st time)

I'm sorry, I haven't read the rest of the thread fully but I'll give some suggestions.

There are several good izakayas in Vancouver. I'm partial to Kingyo and Zakkushi (OK not technically an izakaya but similar atmosphere). But there are other good ones, the Guus are good (Guu w/ Garlic is probably my favourite of them).

I don't go for sushi all that much but I hear Miku is great, although it might be out of your price range. When I lived in the area and was looking for a cheap meal I'd sometimes hit Samurai Sushi or Kadoya although the chowhounds on this board will probably admonish me for that.

I don't know of any good XLB downtown, but there are several decent Shanghainese places in Richmond. I think Dinesty would be a good choice since it has a good English menu and reasonable prices although truth be told it's not the absolute top XLB I've tried. But it's still good.

Otherwise, I would recommend trying Santouka. It's a high end ramen joint not far from your house that's got really good soup. Or if it's a hot night there's a dynamite gelato place called Bella Gelateria, and you can have a nice walk around the convention center afterwards and enjoy the nice views of the mountains.

Seattle Chowhounds in Vancouver--where should we go next? (Also, recommendations for Victoria)

Erm... yeah. I meant Spinnaker's. Had a brain fart there I guess. The food's bad? Noted.

I was also going to recommend Kingyo - my favorite izakaya. I am also a fan of nearby Zakkushi.

The best gelato in Vancouver- Bella Gelataria in Coal Harbour.

Hawksworth is new and has a big buzz. Market, is a divisive place but has a cool patio and is reasonably priced fine dining.

I don't know much about Victoria, but Schooners is often cited by Victorians as a nice brewpub. It's a bit of a faux-Brit place but afternoon tea at the Empress is a regular tourist stop, although for my money I'd just as soon go to the White Heather for that.

Sushi and Larmen?

There's a new restaurant on Bridgeport in Richmond just east of No. 3 Rd. It used to be called "Sam's Sandwiches" or something but now there's a big sign that says "Sushi and Larmen (sic)" and "Tokyo Style Hot Dogs". I'm not even sure what the name of the place is but I'm wondering if any has tried it and can report on it.

Pub or Restaurant recommendation please

I'm not sure Nuba is what you're looking for... the one near Main St. at least. It's a smallish restaurant and not really meant for hanging out for extended periods.

I was also going to suggest the Alibi Room because I really like that place, but I guess they can't accommodate a group your size.

There is the Kingston- the food frankly is nothing special, but they can handle bigger groups, it's centrally located, not hipster and should have something for everyone.

Although it's a chain, Joey's on Burrard is nice- but it's been a few years for me and I don't know what the prices are like nowadays.
