Questions about Lexington #1 BBQ
That's great, Miss Piggy. I am glad you went, and that you liked it.
Welcome to the club!
Questions about Lexington #1 BBQ
hey urdaddy,
We havent had the opportunity to disagree in quite some time! I hope you have been well and the food has been good.
Lexington #1 is actually a pretty terrific place, imho. I have been traveling in eastern NC this week, Skylight Inn Ayden for lunch yesterday, B's bbq Greenville for lunch today, AND I am considering a take out from Lexington #1 on the way home. I feel confident that Miss Piggy will be perfectly happy with her experience. I wish she could have the same experience I did when Wayne Monk served me at the "bar" by the register. I had the opportunity to ask him for more dip! Or the time a waitress insisted that I take a free skin sandwich with me, when I asked a gentleman about the sack full he just ordered.
I love the q, the red slaw, the hush puppies, the dip, the funky old building and the hard to get in and out of parking lot. Is it different than other places? Sure! But a profoundly underwhelming experience may just be singularly yours.
Sorry it wasnt up to your standards!
King Cake near Durham NC?
I know you wanted local to Durham BUT we get ours overnight from NO via Haydels www.haydelbakery.com .
My wife grew up just up the coast from NO and hooked me on Haydels.
But I never get the baby....
North Carolina BBQ TOUR
I really like Bunn's in Windsor, if it hasnt been suggested.
I live in Gastonia and would not go to ROs if it were free, but I LOVE their dip (slaw). I buy the dip at the grocery.
Seriously, ROs has no place on your NC BBQ TOUR list, IMHO. However, it is in NC and it serves something that was maybe once pig.....
Driving from Charlotte to Grover NC - need food suggestions
familyguy13,
You are aware that Grover IS only a little more than 1/2 an hour from Charlotte, aren't you?
Are you looking for something between the Charlotte airport and Grover?
Please be more specific.
Knife & Fork - Spruce Pine NC - dining destination
Now you guys have me questioning my memory!
Maybe I was wrong about the fingerling part, I am often wrong......
They could have been cut down to that size/shape.
Regardless, they were delicious and a perfect side to the pork belly.
Knife & Fork - Spruce Pine NC - dining destination
I finally made it to K&F Thursday evening. I walked in at 6:20 without a reservation (just me) and was able to eat only because their 3 stool bar had one open seat. It was almost a full house at 7:30 when I left, and I saw several couples turned away for a lack of a reservation.
I started with the candy roaster squash soup, and then had stuffed pork belly. The soup was great but the pork belly was over the top, stuffed with fennel, garlic, onions, peppers and served over roasted fingerling sweet potatoes. FYI - the portion was surprisingly large. Nate came out to check on me and was very happy to discuss his (local) ingredients and techniques. The experience exceeded my high expectations!
I will be back as soon as possible, what a gem.

winefuhrer,

I will be up over labor day and want to give it a try..
thanks
Gaston County, NC - more than just RO's
Believe it or not we now have a Chicken Box in G-town. I was suspect when told but have now been twice, and they claim to be part of the Chicken Box in Charlotte.
I asked.
The look of the resto is the same as is the menu. The food is close enough for me not to drive to CLT for my chicken fix.
I have tried the fried chicken and pork chops, most of the sides (the collards are sublime).
They are on Bessemer City Highway, south side of 85, close to West End Hardware (same side of the road)
FYI they only have 7 tables, most of their biz is takeout.
As soon as it gets cooler I am taking on the neck bones and rice!

Thanks for posting this leahsc. I have a cabin not too far away and I will have to check this out and report, as SP is much closer to me than Asheville.
Lexington BBQ off the NCBS trail?
I think you are right on the money, Sue.
I had a very interesting conversation with Wayne Monk about a month ago whils eating at the counter. He was gracious about his comments but he is really tired of food tv crews. I didnt ask him about it, he volunteered the info that "those tv people were here again"
I asked him that in his wildest dreams he ever thought he would be a regular on televised bbq specials, and be nationally famous, and naturally he said no.
He really doesnt need the publicity as business was very good prior to food tv's arrival.
that may explain why he wanted off the NCBS list.
Road trip from Miami to Asheville, need recs
littleman,
how do you do that? you are amazing - as i read down this thread , i knew it was yours before i saw your name. kudos!
Apple Jack (Fried Pie) at Nothin’ Fancy Cafe in Edenton
About like it always is, just ok. I like sitting at the bar , and usually the conversation far outshines the food. Last Thursday had the red snapper special and their corn pudding. The fish was ok, but bland. I spent my meal in conversation and it became an afterthought. I had inedible fried oysters ( huge wad of breading with offtasting oysters) served last winter, and I told myself I would not go back, but I enjoy a post meal stroll and the location is perfect for that.

thanks. i ended up at watermans grill, again. i have been to the river house, and found it to be just ok. have a good flight!

Melanie,
I am actually sitting in a hotel in Edenton debating my dinner choices!
Apple Jack aside, how was the food at NFC?
Charlotte , off of Interstate 85

Albany, GA..............
Naco, if you say "nevermind' then in my book, it is truly a lost cause, and I am stuck at the bar at Outback eating a salad, or satisfying my Krystal jones.
Albany, GA..............
I think the reason that no one has replied is that Albany is a wasteland food wise, at least in my experience. I travel through there periodically and have found nothing. I hope someone replies and proves me wrong.
great bbq closest to charlotte?
Your post brought a smile to my face, and reinforced why Iove this site so much!
I am glad you enjoyed the Chicken Box. I think I am overdue for a visit.....

Road trip lunch near-ish to Charlotte
I concur with the La'Wans Soul Food rec., very convenient to the route, and great food.
great bbq closest to charlotte?
Adhering to the intent of your post, finding great bbq in Charlotte (or close by) , you are indeed out of luck. There is decent bbq in town (Old Hickory House) and decent close by (Bridges in Shelby) but no great bbq. As a KCBS judge, you know great, and it just isnt here.
Regarding fried chicken in Charlotte, I prefer The Chicken Box to Prices.
I hope you enjoy NC.

Winkler Bakery in Old Salem?
I have never had one (or two) last that long!
Seriously, yes they will last that long. BTW I fully concur with arbyunc's assessment of Deweys VS Winkler's.
Winkler Bakery in Old Salem?
I love their sugar cake and I could eat a whole one by myself, but dont!
I have tried all their cookies but the sugar cake in the wax paper is my downfall.
Milledgeville Ga and Lake Sinclair Environs
johnb,
I pass through Milledgeville from time to time on business and about all I have found downtown is The Brick. It is really a college bar but they have good beers and you can get decent pizza by the slice which ,works well for one person. I do know someone who live in the 'ville so i will ask her opinion.
Bone-In Artisan BBQ Truck, Columbia, SC
north2south,
I sent your post to a friend in Columbia, who found them yesterday (via facebook) . He and his wife arrived rather late for lunch, close to two, and they were out of most everything - which is great news. They did get some chicken salad and the owner comped them some burnt end baked beans which reportedly were awesome. They will be going back earlier next time as the menu looked so great, and the owner was really nice. I am glad that you posted this, as I could pass the knowledge on to someone else. Truly an example of Chowhound at its best!
Charlotte Hounds
Just a short , slightly off topic note, Halcyon also serves Proffitt Farms 100% organic, grass fed beef. The short ribs Lynlato mentioned are theirs. They are a local (Kings Mt. NC) producer of a high quality product. My wife and I recently took a cooking class at the farm. The Proffitts are wonderful people who really care about their animals.
SC Barbecue near Charlotte
I think Courtney's in Clover, SC may have mustard based sauce, but i am not certain.
Shrimp burgers
All calm and composed here, and no red herring intended. There is nothing wrong with us having different opinions. Please keep in mind that we are not snarky on this board, which is a refreshing change from most forums. I really like the civility of the southeast board. I am glad you are here, keep posting but dont be so touchy!
I will try your suggestion of the Foolish Frog the next time I am in the area and will happily post. Thanks for the suggestion!
Shrimp burgers
if you are the same urdaddy that likes Jim and Nicks's as an example of charlotte bbq, we are polar opposites food wise!
but if we all agreed this would be a boring place, and ch is never boring.
btw, where do you suggest redstickboy go for shrimp burgers?
