How to eat cheaply without getting chased down the street?

Indeed yes. Go to John's on Bleecker Street: you'll have to order a whole pie, but you'll finish it. Or for a wonderful pizza, by the slice for lunch, try the thin-crust pies at Gruppo on Avenue B. I just discovered them and now it's the only pizza I'll eat. Fantastic.

Best Black and White Cookies?

Those are all good, but what I want to know is: why does no one make a long, skinny black and white cookie, so that you would get vanilla and chocolate icing in every bite? Instead, that's impossible, except for the two bites you can get on either side of the round cookies. I think this is a brilliant idea and I give it gratis to anyone who will make this cookie so I can have it. That's all.

Hard Rolls?

Kaiser rolls (hard rolls) are available at Moishe's kosher bakery on Second Avenue and 7th Street; also the Ninth Street Bakery at 9th and 1st. They may not be exactly what you have in mind, but they're quite good.

Best Lo Mien in the city?

Their congee was really good too, and their wonton soup. Though now I prefer Cantonese wonton soup. But yeah, 17 Mott had some great old-school dishes: steak kew, fung wong gai, wor shu opp.

Looking for great pasta in East Village/Gramercy area

Fabulous carbonara and alfredo at John's. And the garlic bread is incredible.

Best Lo Mien in the city?

Downstairs Wo Hop, my maiden voyage into the great world of Chinese food, back in 1968! And duck lo mein was what I had first.

Best Har Gow in Chinatown?

27 Sunshine, or whatever its name is, that used to be HSF, on Bowery just south of Canal on the south side of the arcade. Really, really good: nice nutty kind of flavor to the wrapper enfolding a whole and perfect shrimp.

If you go, let me know. I'll ride shotgun and pay for the gas!

Best places to buy maple syrup

The maple sugar/syrup place at the Union Square Greenmarket has excellent Grade B syrup. It might be from upstate NYState, though; not sure. Maple sugar candy is pretty good, too.

Best BBQ in NYC

Well....full disclosure, foodwhisperer, so did I the second time, at home, where no one could see my shame. Or want to share. Because I wouldn't.

Best BBQ in NYC

Absolutely loved Georgia's! Ate half a rib rack all by myself. What a pig. But it was good!

Shortbread

Does anyone know a bakery where I can get fresh shortbread cookies? There's always tinned Walker's, but I would love some freshly made, to make shortcake with. Thanks!

Good places for crabs in NYC?

And they recently (well, over the past year, maybe?) upped the price by a buck. This in the face of a Maine lobster glut...not exactly passing the prices on to the consumer, are they?

British-style Takeaway Roast Meats

Can anyone help me out with the name of this great place for roast meats, English Sunday-dinner style, in SoHo? It has by-the-pound roast beef, pork, even Yorkshire pudding. I think it's near Kenmare, on a north-south street, but the name totally escapes me. Hopefully it's not closed...thanks!

Why does NYC lack "real" doughnut shops?

Does anyone know if the Italian bakeries near the elevated line and Holy Family Nursing Home in Bensonhurst are still there? I think they were on New Utrecht? Around 18th Avenue train stop and 84th street...it was at least twelve years ago, but maybe... Anyway, they had incredible jelly doughnuts...

How do you like to be addressed by your server?

Personally, I see nothing wrong or ageist in "ma'am". It's polite, courteous, applicable and it doesn't make judgments. I love it when I'm in England and servers or clerks call me "madam"...makes me feel like Her Majesty. I've started addressing people as "sir" and "ma'am" all the time, influenced by "Downtown Abbey"....

Why does NYC lack "real" doughnut shops?

I have been looking for old-school jelly doughnuts for ages now. The ones with the dark raspberry jelly and the granulated sugar, not the cheap cherry jelly and powdered sugar ones. Can't find them anywhere since all the traditional local bakeries closed. Sometimes for holidays they're at Moishe's on Second Avenue, I think, and in the East Village Polish butcher shops, but they're not the same as the ones of my youth. Sad.

Where to Buy Excellent Scallops

Rosendo, 2nd Ave between 22 and 23 Streets, has dry scallops that looked pretty good the other week when I was in there.

Having lunch with a friend: any suggestions for the area? Italian, steak/burgers, seafood, Chinese, Japanese. Three/four blocks up/downtown is the limit...thank you!

Where can I get the best French Dip sandwich in NYC?

I ate a LOT from Roll-N-Roaster, and was so very sad when they closed. It wasn't on a Philippe's level, which I still maintain is fabulous (and so do all the nearby passengers when I whip out my nice double-dipped lamb sandwich on the plane home), but it was pleasing in a very, well, pleasing sort of way.

Roze, I'll try Mile End's beef on weck as well...but you probably do need to be in Western NY to get the true experience. My favorite, surprisingly, isn't in Buffalo but in Olean about 60 miles south, place called Beef 'n Barrel. Sublime.

Looking for something yummy in the general vicinity of the East Village where we can pick up a late afternoon meal to eat on our 6:00 flight from LaGuardia...

Found this: "Mayo that has already been spread on a sandwich or contained in a dish such as macaroni salad should be eaten within the hour unless the sandwich or dish has been refrigerated. Any dish or sandwich with mayonnaise already spread or contained within it should be eaten within 3 days of refrigeration"

Really? I'd be interested to hear more about that...it would make me a lot less nervous about carting shrimp salad sandwiches around on trips.

Luke's is a good idea, but you need to be careful of the mayonnaise on the lobster rolls. Unless you have an insulated bag to put it in, you can't leave it out for very long at all.

Where can I get the best French Dip sandwich in NYC?

Nothing could possibly be as good as Philippe's in L.A. The French dip beef is amazing. The lamb is even better. Second best is the Buffalo NY specialty beef on kummelweck. Again, nothing like it in NYC. If there is, somebody please tell me!

Well, I think that's what the guy said. It might be another Fine Fare...check on Google. Or you could just phone.

Not at all. I'm looking forward to trying them myself, since there's absolutely no place in Manhattan to get my faves, Sahlen's from Buffalo...

Meatball Parm Nirvana

Eddie's Pizza truck has great meatball sandwiches for about 8-9 bucks. But you have to ask for extra sauce and no cheese, as they're kind of dry otherwise. But the meatballs are great. It parks in front of the Starrett Lehigh building at 601 West 26th, from 11-3 on Mondays. I don't know their other regular stations, but they're probably more midtown on other days.

Craving a lobster roll uptown to mark the beginning of being stuck in the city for the summer!

Luke's is the best, and you can request no seasoning just mayo, or no mayo, or whatever you like. The ones at the Lobster Place in Chelsea Market are generous, but they put all sorts of rubbish in them. Why do people mess with simple perfection:

Where to buy Thumann's hotdogs/franks in NYC?

I emailed the Customer Service address, got a phone number for Casanova Foods, now apparently Big Apple Foods, which is the local distributor. You can get the hot dogs at about three places in Manhattan, as I understood the cheerful but a bit incoherent responder.

Fine Fare at 545 Grand Street is the closest to me, but there were places farther uptown, like 10th Avenue in the 40's and I forget the other, maybe it was 3rd Avenue in the 30's. He wasn't very specific, but couldn't have been nicer. He said that since it's a premium price brand, it has been hard to get into supermarkets, but a lot of local delis carry the brand. So email or call, for sure, to get other locations.
